Yeah, if this were a democracy, I'd vote we lock the thread. It's just going to go to worse places from here.

But since this is a mod-ocracy: Anyone want to talk about the Homestuck liveblogs some more? I've really been enjoying the ones I've found, and want to find some more. Watching people experience Cascade for the first time is almost as good as watching it yourself for the first time.

Ranking, best to worst of what I've found so far:
- Precison F-Strike
- ImReadingThisHomestuckThing
- ReadingHomestuck
- DiscoveringWebcomics
- WTF Is This Homestuck Thing
- DiscoveringHomestuck

The last one is probably not worth checking out, as he just posts a poo poo-ton of tumblr/4chan reaction pictures and doesn't actually comment on stuff. But that's everyone I've found so far.

King of Solomon posted:

I haven't read it, myself, but the Webcomics thread seems to utterly loathe Goblins, so you're not really alone there.

Eh, I don't hate it as vehemently as the Webcomics thread does, but it's aggressively mediocre at times, and the author is kind of annoying. He combines some of the bad traits of Piro (very slow updates and bad about following up on reader donation rewards) and Mookie (too many words, extremely "stylized" drawing, weird fetishes lurking on the edges of the comic) into a D&D comic.

Gunnerkrigg definitely deserves to win, both on comic content and author behavior.

Goblins was ok early on when it was just a comic about a bunch of goblins who took PC class levels.

Then it got darker and edgier and kinda weirder as a lot of these comics do, and yeah more and more borderline fetish stuff crept its way in (including a few parts that could almost be qualified as gore porn).

I stopped reading it around then.

It doesn't even measure up to Gunnerkrigg Court.

1. Burlew asked people not to vote for his comic in webcomic polls in an old post.

2. Significant numbers of people in GitP also love Goblins.

I love his reaction videos, specifically Jade: Enter. It captures what probably went through most fans' minds when that update came out: a mass "OH gently caress" :allears:

Pretty much. Goblins' creator Thunt seems to spend 10% of his time drawing the comic and the rest of his time and energy on shilling it and making reward drives for it.

I like Goblins and I honestly don't think it should even have been entered into that contest, much less get enough votes to make it into the finals. Seriously, what the gently caress? It's never been half as good as Gunnerkrigg Court is at it's worst. It's readable at best and aggressively terrible at worst. It's update schedule is poo poo and it's art is nowhere near what would be called "good". How did it manage to get past the first round?

And why isn't Lackadaisy in the contest?

...I like Goblins a lot. :( I'm preeeeetty sure that most of the things you're complaining about are in the minority of the comic's attention.

I have something of a hard time keeping up with GC and all the random things that seem to just happen. I guess I haven't done an archive binge in quite a while but I have trouble figuring out what the point is of pretty much anything.

All in all it's more of a matter of taste, I suppose?

It's a bit sad, but understandable. C&H is really accessible and popular, and very consistent both in schedule and comedy - it never just knocks it right out of the park, but it's rarely something I can't at least smile at. I've never read Lackadaisy, mostly because the setting never really appealed to me, and I imagine there's a lot of people similar.

In comparatively better news, Homestuck lost to Gunnerkrigg Court in the final Four of this Webcomic tournament. Edit: And also consider giving it a vote, because it's up against some poorly-drawn fetish comic.

His reactions are pretty good, but I like the ones that keep analyzing as they're freaking out. That one I linked above actually figured out the whole "mass of two universes" Green Sun thing while watching Cascade, which is more than I can say for myself or most of the commenters.

Gunnerkrigg Court is one of those comics that you have to actually read all the way through. You can't skip between arcs or skim pages. Tom Siddell is an excellent writer and makes use of his pages.

As for what the point is, well, that's sort of part of the mystery. There is intrigue between the Court and the Woods, both of which are enigmas in their own way. Antimony is a medium of sorts and the comic is kind of a mash-up between the daily lives of the characters living in the Court and the weird poo poo that constantly lurks in the edges. The plot unfolds slowly, answers often opening the way to new questions. If you're not a fan of mysteries then Gunnerkrigg probably isn't for you, but it's an excellent read and the art style is gorgeous.

Edit: Also GC is apparently currently losing to Goblins what the poo poo.

aNYWAY,
tHAT'S REALLY ALL THERE IS,
tO REPORT ON THE SUBJECT,
oF ME GETTING HURT,

Since we're killing time, I've been meaning to ask about what role we think the abstract, game mechanic parts of Homestuck are really going to play. I know the answer is "Whatever the plot wants them to, and probably pretty abstractly/without explanation either", but they haven't completely disappeared yet. Problem Sleuth had game mechanics, and although they were never really a restriction (new rules would be added or changed to accomodate the story) they were a framing device right up to the end.

They're the sort of thing that sort of defy in-story explanation, even though the characters themselves reference their echeladders and boondollars and such. My best guess is that the game has a lot of associated skaia-technology that makes things like strife specibi, captchalogue cards, and echeladders possible, and part of the process of bringing the game to the world that is to play it involves disseminating this technology to the young players, so they can interface correctly with the game.

My guess is these interfaces only really work as intended against proper parts of the game. Health vials and gel viscosity, for example, are little protection against having Bec Noir shove a sword through your chest. Certainly if the players fight each other, the whole affair takes on a very real, physical quality (Gamzee shooting Equius in the knee and choking him to death) rather than abstract health bars.

The spotty implementation of the game rules can probably be put down to how far off the rails the whole game thing is. Some enemies or situations don't interface with their fancy stats at all, while some powers (like a lot of god tier stuff) go beyond what the game contains and just straight up physically affect the world.

Welcome back thread!

Some last minute speculation, gathered from manically speculating, rereading, and looking at other people's speculation during the break:

- Vriska (dead) was talking with Beta John, who had Typheus for a Denizen. B-John apparently learned something important from it, which we never heard more about, I think? She was then last seen, during the very silly bit with Hussie, walking around in a dream bubble of Tavros's land, The Land of Sand and Zephyr. Tavros was one of the few trolls (along with Kanaya) who actually talked to their Denizens. Is she seeking out the ghost of Tavros to talk to him about his Denizen? Will she have some important info for Team Meteor in the future?

- Some weird stuff I noticed about GCAT:
* Interacted with Jane, Dirk, and Roxy, but not Jake. Opposite of Bec, who interacted only with Jade.
* Apparently survives at at least 413 years in the future, since it's interacting with Dirk and Roxy, and First Guardians don't time travel under their own power, as far as we know.
* Assuming the inevitable Jade / GCAT confrontation is to happen, then will probably somehow come along with Dirk or Roxy?

- I still think that that 'ironic that you'll be destroyed by all these horses' is some clue to Lord English's origins / defeat, not a reference to 'one trick pony'. Will Maplehoof (the miniature one) actually have an actual role in the story?

I hope we do just skip ahead 2 years, or at least 1 and a half. Just flashing forward to the future and landing us in the middle of several plots going off at once would be...actually us not having a clue about what's going on would be pretty routine at this point.
