Hey remember all those lovely things I had to say about Brett Dream a month ago? I take them all back! Nowadays, the horse crap smell is gone and it's this wonderful bit of refreshing funkiness! I'm glad I gave it another shot -- they claim two years of effective cellaring and I wonder how'll it go from here.

So, I have another question for the fine folks in this beer thread... what are some of your favorite tripels, other than Thirsty Dog Cerberus, Golden Monkey, or La Fin Du Monde? (I realize that probably 95% of you haven't tried Thirsty Dog's tripel, but that's one of the three I've tried) My main beer drinking buddies birthday is coming up, and his favorite style other than IPAs is Belgian Tripels, so I'm thinking about picking him up a bottle or two of some good Tripels. I don't think he's actually ever tried any Tripels from Belgium, so I'm hoping to find some. It looks like my local store has Tripel Karmeliet, and Westmalle's Tripel. What are your thoughts on those two, and do you have any other recommendations that would be somewhat widely available?

Yes, Karmeliet is excellent. Allagash, St Bernardus, Russian River Damnation, Weyerbacher Merry Monk are all good. Chimay Cinq Cints (white label) is a classic tripel from Belgium. I don't know if you have access to it, but Allagash's tripel is phenomenal. Even if it's not available to you it'd be worth trading for. They also do a bourbon barrel aged version of it (Curieux). Pic of my latest beer haul:

Karmeliet is my favorite Belgian-brewed Tripel by far, then I would say Westmalle after that, followed by St. Bernardus/Chimay. American tripel: Allagash and Merry Monks like Calvin said. Long Strange Tripel by Boulevard is pretty good, and if you're looking for an IPA/Tripel combo: Green Flash Le Freak and my favorite, Houblon by La Chouffe.

Awesome, thanks for the tips guys. I'll definitely pick up the Tripel Karmeliet, and probably the Westmalle, too. I don't get Allagash in my area, but I will give the Weyerbach a shot. I have never tried Raging Bitch, or any of Flying Dog's beers yet. I have been hesitant to pick up a 6 pack of them for whatever reason... but the beer store I'm going to be stopping at to pick up the Tripels only sells beers by the single bottle, so I'll probably pick up a bottle or two of Raging Bitch to give it a shot. Edit: Missed Tenacious's comment about Le Freak... I didn't even realize what this was! I've seen it a few times, and have never gotten it. Looks like I might pick up a bottle of that, too, along with the Raging Bitch.

My buddy who works for Southern Wine and Spirits says Reno gets whatever Cantillon makes it into the state, so there's a good chance he could find it somewhere. I don't know the town at all, so I can't recommend particular bottle shops or anything.

I may be wrong in saying this, but Victory V12 is perhaps the best quad brewed in America, if it's a quad. This beer is complex with sweetness of caramel with burnt candied sugar, mild esters, slightly spice of cloves, and a nice fruity banana coming though. This has a lot of complexity and a nice thick mouthfeel which was my biggest gripe with Lost Abbey's quad. One thing throwing me off is the clarity of this beer though, crystal clear and copper body which is unlike any other quad I've had. Either way I'm impressed. One thing I'm a bit disappointed in though is that I didn't wait to drink this, I bought this at a store I don't frequent often, almost all of their craft stock is old so I figured I'd pick a beer that holds up to aging, well this was bottled on December 29, 2011, which is probably a bit fresh to fully enjoy this. I'll have to buy another and hold onto it for a bit. Edit: Holy heck this goes with blue cheese so well, the buttery salty flavor works so well with the beer. Pretty Things Baby Tree is pretty good, albeit very yeasty tasting. Sweetwater Dank Tank BSP was probably my favorite American quad. Does BBQ count?

Drinking a Pipeworks Close Encounter, which they bill as a "Hoppy Double Stout" but falls pretty snugly into the bill of a black IPA. It has a nice mix of super-resinous hop character and dark malt flavor that reminds me of Goose Island Night Stalker, but not as refined or well-executed. I also keep getting some hints of soy sauce here and there, but I'm not sure if that's just the hop and dark malt flavors mashing into each other messily. Another one that's good, but not great. At least the bottle art isn't too bad this time, and has a nice retro kick to it. Hopefully they stick with these guys for labels for a while, because otherwise beers like Ninja vs. Unicorn and Jones Dog will put them in the unfortunate company of Weyerbacher for worst beer labels on the market.

Had a New Holland Envious on draft tonight. It was listed as a fruit ale and was described as having a nice raspberry flavor, but I couldn't pick up on any fruit flavor at all- it tasted really flat and...I hesitate to say sour because I enjoy a good sour, but acidic maybe? It was definitely unpleasant and that made me sad because I generally enjoy what New Holland has to offer. My question is, does this match up with others' experiences or did I dick myself out of a good beer because of this terrible cold that I'm coming off of? I saw a lot of middling reviews on BA afterward but I'm not sure how much stock to put in those. Also WBF in Raleigh is sold out for the session I was planning to make it to, but I can take a teeny bit of consolation in the fact that if I'm still sick/stuffy on Saturday then I probably wouldn't be able to enjoy anything I tried anyway

Hugh Malone is the only special brew I have tried, wasn't too impressed. As for American quads go, I really enjoyed The Sixth Glass by Boulevard, has a complex but very drinkable palate and masks it's 10.5% well. Three Philosophers is just as good and The Reverend by Avery would be my third choice.

I love V12, but I don't think I'd ever call it a quad. I don't think it fits into any BJCP style, really - it's like an Imperial Belgian Amber, if anything. Maybe a Belgian barleywine, but then again it doesn't drink like any other Belgian barleywine they make in the states. On tap, it drinks a lot lighter than any barleywine, but I think it's a bit more sticky in bottles - maybe that's a freshness issue though. I don't have it all that often.

Dragon's Milk is really good, barrel-aged Golden Cap is really good, Envious is just not a good beer.
