What's up with all the fake Air Jordan sites that have been popping up lately? I assume they are fakes, but good ones. I see them posted all over facebook. I thought the US cracked down on people importing fakes, unless they are made in the US.

It's whack-a-mole. ICE can't possibly keep up with everyone selling fake sneakers, handbags, sports jerseys, etc.

A friend of my wife is not what you might call technically savvy. She has managed to gently caress up her iPad at least a couple times while trying to get her porn on, presumably because she does not understand about things like banner ads and that no, you cannot get a free iphone by clicking here.

I'm the first to admit that I don't know poo poo about ipads and what they're capable of. I would guess that any of the variety of youtube-like porn sites would be sufficient for her needs, but they've all got at least some ads on them. Are there any out there that are relatively ad-free? Maybe something geared specifically for iPads? I don't know if there's an adblock type thing for iOS or not, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that would not be within her ability to install or maintain. My apologies if any of this is counter to forum rules. I'll be happy to edit my post if that's the case, though I didn't see anything in the forum rules about it.

Porn sites will either be subscription based or covered in ads, that's their whole economy. And she sounds like the person to just follow random links so maybe just tell her the ipad is broke and she done hosed it by doing this, this and this. That might be enough to get her to be careful once/if she manages to get the ipad fixed.

Also, how is it hosed? I was under the impression that iOS was relatively more secure than windows.

And how did she drop the porn bomb? I'd like to hear how that conversation went down.

Exec at work is going to India monday and wants me to setup some kind of voip on his laptop asap today so he doesn't rack up huge mobile roaming charges on multiple hour long conf calls.

I'm pretty sure he will be dialing mostly US and Canada #s.

Google voice is all I know. Will that work over there?

Would skype be better? does that cost? will it work over there?

Vonage? I know it costs, is there a PC app? work over there?

Something better?

edit: He's saying he has a skype account and wants to use that. everything going to work ok dialing in to us #s from that? Or would something else be better?

Best option is skype and having your local office run skype too. You then do a voice chat from PC to PC.

No charge, simple to run.

Just make sure that both parties have headsets.

Skype costs $2.99 a month for unlimited calls to the US/Canada. You can sign him up for a month and then cancel it at the end.

He doesn't have any kind of monthly charge but I saw when he signed in on the skype website it said he had like $10 credit. Will that get him pretty far dialing US 800 #s? or should he do the unlimited?

edit: ahh just saw it on their site. $0.023 a minute.

Yeah that's kind of what I thought. I guess I'll just take some screenshots of redtube or something and note which are the good parts and which are the bad.

I have no idea what the state of the thing is or how it got hosed up. I thought most of the malware was geared for Windows too, but I guess iOS has enough market share now for hackers to bother with them. Sadly I was not present for this conversation, but she and my wife have been friends for like 25 years or something so I doubt it was anything too shocking to her.

There is no malware for iOS. What do you mean by "hosed up", that's not a technical term.

If you find yourself doing this sort of thing even remotely often you should pick up one of these. I do not endorse this particular one I just grabbed the first amazon link for reference. I paid $30 for mine about 5 years ago and would gladly have paid $100+ for all the time it has saved me.

Thanks, it was a one time thing but I'll keep that in mind for The Future.
You were right, it worked from the admin account, though I ended up having to go to properties>security and set permissions - the permissions were still set to weird values that had to do with the old computer.

I've ordered from them a few times. I have received everything I ordered in working shape. It's all pretty cheap stuff, obviously, and the shipping is super slow (as in, don't expect your order in the next 30 days).

If you don't need the item in a hurry, go for it. All their stuff is cheap and, while it may not be the most durable, it functions (in my experience).

They're legit, they just have long shipping times because your package literally is shipped via boat from mainland China. Some of their more popular products are in their smaller US warehouses though.

Some possibilities:
  • Tell the callers that they've called a mobile device and to put that number on their "do not call list."
  • Register your mobile for the Do Not Call registry (in the US; other countries have similar things I think.)
  • Complain to the FCC if you're in the US, or your country's equivalent regulatory organization.
  • Call your carrier and see if they can/will block numbers from calling/texting you.
  • If you're using an iPhone, jailbreak and install iBlacklist. For other phones google for call/SMS blocking apps.
  • Don't answer calls or reply to SMS from people you do't know and hope they get the hint.

It was everywhere, basically. There was just a huge amount of disco on the radio in the '70s, and as it became more popular record companies would put out anything regardless of quality. It's pretty much like the anti-hair metal backlash in the early '90s. We'll probably see a similar anti-hip-hop backlash soon, for similar reasons, since late-2000s hip-hop has seen similar criticism.

I'm trying to ship stuff from colorado to connecticut as cheap as possible. Mostly boxes full of clothes a computer. Going traveling and cant bring my poo poo with me. Question is how do I do this as cheap as possible? It could take 2 months it doesn't matter it just has to get there. Is parcel post with usps still cheapest way to do this?? Can I just bring boxes to the post office and ask to ship parcel post.

In my experience yes, USPS Parcel Post is the cheapest. I found UPS to be close but often a few dollars more. Just be sure whatever you're sending is worth the cost and it wouldn't be cheaper just to buy new stuff on the other side.

Yes you can just show up at the post office with your box. Pack your items nicely (they can get THRASHED so put effort into it), use plenty of good tape, and label them clearly. Also you'll need to keep things a reasonable size, the current limit on parcel post is 130 inches in total (for packages where any 1 dimension exceeds 12" on its own). Any bigger and you're looking into oversized freight which can be much more expensive (and probably cheaper with UPS instead).

Edit: The USPS postage price calculator is pretty good.
