I wasn't overly fond of it. It was just a hoppier coffee stout. Meh not worth the 'Mikkeller price'. Just buy some Yeti or Storm king.

Since you mention Brooklyn - which Brooklyn beers are worth trying? I've seen some positivity about their lager

Knowing your IPA preferences, you'll likely enjoy Brooklyn Blast. Tastes sweeter/fruiter than Maharaja. Black Chocolate Stout is my favorite beer from them, and it's totally a textbook imperial stout.

Local 1 and 2 are also both solid Belgian pale/dark ales. Monster if you are into sweeter not so hoppy barleywines. Sorachi Ace is interesting for that unique sorachi ace hop profile imparted on a saison. IMO Black Ops is one of the most overpriced beers in the market.

One unique thing about Brooklyn to note: Pairing their beer with food usually enhances the taste over having the beer by itself, and maybe that's Garrett Oliver's style/modus operandi. I really hated my initial taste of Concoction. I thought I was licking a cough drop that was wrapped in a rag doused in floor cleaner. Paired it with dark chocolate though and it tasted much, much better. Local 1/2 and Sorachi Ace are excellent beers to bring to a party and they pair well with a ton of foods.

Those sound good. I've thought about getting the Chocolate Stout, but have been afraid it would be too sweet.

I'll be getting my first paycheck at my new job soon and I can't wait to get some of these beers. My "must try" list is getting longer, especially with the new beers that just came to Maine.

Sixpoint is not one of my favorite breweries, but I definitely think they are solid. The Resin tastes just like it sounds. I enjoyed it, but I agree with air- in that it's definitely not sessionable, even by IPA standards. Also keep your eyes peeled for Sweet Action and Crisp, both of which are go-to hot weather beers for me.

As far as Brooklyn Brewery goes, most of their best beers aren't bottled. Brooklyn Blast is really great if you can find it, though.

no, it's not, and it ages wonderfully, so pick up a couple extra if you like it. Sorachi Ace is also excellent and i'll agree that the Local brews are worth a shot, too, but i can't say i'm a particular fan of their other beers (although a friend of mine loves their lager)

as mentioned, the black chocolate stout is good, and blast is a solid DIPA, if a little generic (i can't remember having a strong positive feeling about it, but i do remember liking it). and i really, really like their pennant ale as a good, everyday drinker.

All of their big bottles are fantastic, their Lager is a top rated Vienna, Black Chocolate Stout is definitely worth getting a 4 pack of for the price, and their East India Pale Ale is solid.

New Belgium pasteurizes, so it won't age like an unpasteurized sour. That said, I had a taste of a Cocoa Mole on Wednesday and its flavor has developed a lot since it first came out. I'd guess up to six months would be fine, maybe a year if you feel like a daring experiment. Long-term isn't likely to do good things.

I think mikkeller's small bottle 12 oz stuff is far more pricey than their bomber stuff. Around me Beer Geek Breakfast is 9.99, Brunch is 14.99. but at the same time Green Gold IPA is like 4-5.99.

Ah, okay. I kind of figured that was what the pricing was like, it's definitely up there.

The only other beer I've seen with that kind of pricing is BA stuff/Evil Twin stuff. Is Evil Twin any good? I saw Disco Beer or whatever it was at one of my local shops... I think it was $9.99/12 oz though, so I avoided it.

Edit: Drinking a Hop Stoopid with dinner tonight. It's not as good as I remember, but it's still a drat good beer. Previously I would have probably put it in my top 5 IIPA, but after this bottle I'm thinking it's more top 10 material, than top 5.

Evil Twin is actually run by the brother of the guy running Mikkeller and overall I'd say that my opinion of both is about the same - some amazing stuff, some disappointing stuff, but always pricey.

The Yin (Imperial Stout) and Yang (DIPA) from Evil Twin are both great on their own and are supposed to be combined to make a bad rear end black and tan which is better than the sum of its parts (but maybe not worth $12-14 bucks).

So, a bar here in Kalamazoo had a pretty sweet two part event last night:

Part the First: Goose Island bourbon barrel tasting. Flights of King Henry, Bourbon County, BC Coffee and BC Bramble for 15 bucks. They also threw KBS on tap for comparison because they're just good people.

King Henry: Great. Bourbon, caramel toast and toffee, just like you'd expect. Slightly thicker in the mouth than Abacus, which is all I can really compare it to.

Bourbon County: Still too hot and boozy, but much closer to being great when served as a 4 oz taster.

BC Bramble: Smelled just like a pie, tasted like a confused mess. Not awful, but I'd certainly never buy any more.

BC Coffee/KBS throw down: I've been down on KBS in the past, but have enjoyed a few bottles this year as the vanilla seemed more toned down. However, BC Coffee blew it away. Far and away the best coffee beer I've ever tried. Like a KBS with every dial on some kind of beer flavor mixing board just jacked all the way up.

PART THE SECOND: Livery sour beer tasting. I don't know how many people outside of southwest MI know of the Livery, but they're a small, awesome little joint that barely distributes at all and they tend to make some wacky poo poo which varies between pretty cool and "holy loving crap give me more". Anyway, their three offerings:

Grand Reserve Wheat Triple Bock: a 13% dark brown monster soured in bourbon barrels. Amazingly different and tasty. Starts with the classic, soft and warming vanilla/honey/toast bourbon profile and then transforms on your palate, finishing tart and fruity. Two people described it as almost cidery on the finish. Really unexpected, really good.

Cherry Bomb: dopplebock soured in barrels with sour MI cherries grown by a family I know. Out of all the beers I had, this was easily the best. I don't know how they did it, but this was basically double Supplication. Crazily tart, acidic and dry, balance by a dump truck load of cherry flavor and funk. I want more of this.

Runemeister: "imperial honey pilsner" soured in barrels. Not as much of a home run as the other two. Had a fairly standard sour profile, without the dense funk of the cherry bomb or the powerful base beer and bourbon flavors of the Triple Bock. Still sort of impressive that the honey taste was still noticeable though.

Tl;dr : Kalamazoo is an awesome beer town, and you're a chump if you come to southwest Michigan and miss The Livery.

Petrus' Dubbel is so... pleasant. Like candied plum served over savory biscuits, accented with almond slices and caramel sauce. But the real revelation is the Orval. Oh lord, I wasn't expecting that. If that's what horse blanket is, sign me up. I don't know how to describe the flavor, exactly. The best way I can come up with makes me sound like I'm deeper in my cups than I actually am. the flavor is like an amber texture with hexagonal weave; a sour, musty textile flavor. Pleasantly antiseptic at the end. The dubbel was really nice, but this is just impressive.
