Both of them are surprisingly ugly. They look like something out of the 80s.

More like timeless. When I think 80s interior, I think this: Actually, something about the clunkiness of that FRS radio headunit actulaly does look very 80s to me. Something about how the buttons are shaped and molded or something OXBALLS DOT COM fucked around with this message at 17:26 on Apr 16, 2012 |

The double-DIN size and tiny display are 80s as hell. The clock doesn't help matters at all.

Seriously that Scion head unit looks like it was pulled of a late 90's Pontiac. Goddamn it Pioneer, that's the best bid you had?

PeterWeller posted:The double-DIN size and tiny display are 80s as hell. The clock doesn't help matters at all. That volume knob with the big smooth grip ridges looks like classic cheap 80s plastic parts, as do the rest of the giant, rounded buttons that wouldn't look out of place on a Tiger toy. Honestly, if they had messed with the details and layout a bit, it would look way more contemporary, but the ugly controls combined with the fact that it has a giant soft-beveled bezel that actually sticks out of the DIN slot instead of sitting flush looks pretty awful. Do flat plastic clicky buttons really cost that much more? I don't quite get the complaints about the clock, though. Last I checked, digital clocks weren't exactly dated, and they take up less space on the dash than an analog dial would. OXBALLS DOT COM fucked around with this message at 19:52 on Apr 16, 2012 |

Scions wants you to buy an upgraded radio. They picked that radio to be the worst possible. It would still be the best radio I had ever purchased new.

I do really prefer the double din format. It's nice to have the upgradeability. I have a Clarion CX609 in my WRX and it does a fantastic job of working with my ipod/iphone/bluetooth/etc, and I bet it's been replaced by something nicer. Even the display is adjustable to match your factory backlighting.

emoltra posted:Also, this car isn't the drift car everyone says it's going to be. Seems a bit weird to downplay it like that. First, we have to accept that drifting on public streets is dangerous legally and physically. Next, if we assume that people are going to be trying to drift (from no prior experience/skill), what makes this car so bad? While there's tons of RWD cars that have huge horsepower that'll let you easily break the rear, I don't see that as an automatic leg up on making those cars better drift tools. If the 86 will have the precision in steering feedback and throttle that people say it does, then it should certainly be no worse.

Doesn't seem that far off from what Toyota was saying before, that it'll reward skilled driving* and to get the most out of it you have to know what you're doing. *I assume the opposite is true and it will punish poor driving, particulary when kids turn off traction control and try drifting for the first time.

Still need to break the back end away but it's more than do-able. Hell Mr Drift King has a vid out with a basically stock Sprinter but with a plated diff and it drifts like a champion.

I'm no drifting expert, but if real drifting is anything like R/C drifting, then all they need to do is switch tire compounds to something low-traction like PVC pipes.

Reports are coming in from the First 86 that their cars are in country. This is a few days earlier than the April 20th port date for the BRZ, as I assume that they were on the same boat. They mentioned May 18th as the last day that Scion would like before the First 86 cars are sold. So look for the BRZ to drop in the same time frame.
