I guess I could go with Supernews, and keep whatever left of the Blocknews (if any) as backup. I signed up for that free one you linked as well, no point in not adding it as a backup, thanks, and found out my ISP runs a free newsgroup server with 30 day retention too, so that might as well go on the backup list too. There are these guys http://gibinews.eu/ which cost next to nothing. Anyone heard anything about that? You cant upload, but who wants to do that? Back a year or so ago, nzb.su's VIP status thing was a one off payment for increased status right? Bit pissed off they've changed their minds and changed it to a '$x per y months' scheme instead without grandfathering in previous VIPs to not expire. I barely use it but was always handy as a backup, so felt like I spent money and got nothing out of it.

I'm a newsdemon user and i'm quite happy with them. The only problems i've had with them are sometimse i can't download old stuff because it's corrupted, but i haven't really had much problem with new stuff. I'm paying $5.20 a month (from a black friday deal) for an unlimited connection w/ SSL. It's totally worth it at that price.

NZBs.org isn't closing down anymore, I guess. From the IRC: "We've been convinced to keep running so we will not be shutting down this week as originally planned. Sorry for the roller coaster ride folks. Anyways we will be switching to the beta. If you have not logged in there yet please do so. I'd recommend you check that your email address on this site is valid before logging into the beta."

Is there a way to send nzbs directly to SAB from the beta site? Edit: oh, I have to edit the profile to see the send to SAB option. Gotcha.

EC posted:Is there a way to send nzbs directly to SAB from the beta site? I think the "Send to SAB" option has the site actually connect directly to your SAB instance, so you have to have SAB available to the internet for it to work. On the plus side, this means you can queue things up from anywhere on the internet. nzbdstatus on Firefox and SABconnect++ on Chrome seem to work fine with it though if you want to stay local. It's just Newznab with a few tweaks.

Hi guys, I'm hopping aboard the usenet train and so far I'm having a pleasant (if very confusing) journey. While the OP was very helpful, I have a question that I'm unsure of. There is an NZB which is listed as 98.6 completed, presumably meaning it is missing some files. However, there are 'PAR' and 'PAR2' files included, which upon research, suggest that these somehow re-create the missing files. My question is, am I safe to download the NZB file, and will the PAR files be able to repair/restore it? Or am I going to be wasting a large amount of time? I have had one 60gb file fail to unpack, with error messages such as '2 blocks short' etc. I downloaded QuickPAR, and just clicked here and there on various PAR files without any real clue what I was doing but I couldn't get it to unpack. I was always numerous 'blocks short'.

# ? Apr 16, 2012 23:04 |

PAR files are repair files. Why are you downloading a 60gb file?

# ? Apr 16, 2012 23:05 |

Because I want it? Is there a reason I shouldn't be downloading 60gb files?

Best bet, get supernews with blocknews backup or Usenetnow (which is blocknews unlimited) with Astraweb block. Get rid of lovely highwinds entirely.

So one thing that the old nzbs.org site has that the beta site doesn't, nor does any other site I've seen is the "My Searches" feature. Where you just enter whatever search strings and it'll save them so you can easily search for all of them with one click. Is there somewhere or some way I can get this feature after the old nzbs.org goes away?

dogflaps posted:Because I want it? Is there a reason I shouldn't be downloading 60gb files? You already mentioned a reason, because poo poo like missing blocks can make a 60gb download broken. Best thing to do if you want is to plug the filename into nzbindex.com and see if someone reposted it. I am pretty sure this is covered in the OP.

Does anybody know if DMCA take-downs affect the EU servers of SuperNews/Astraweb? (ie. can I just use the EU server instead of the US for more complete articles?) EDIT: Also, when DMCA take-downs occur, are articles simply remove or are they managled/corrupted? (if an article is missing it's easy to get from another server, but if it's corrupt most apps like SABnzbd don't check other servers, etc) Vinlaen fucked around with this message at 15:58 on Apr 17, 2012 |

The main problem with highwinds is that they do DMCA takedowns. Giganews does it too. So they're not unique. You'll always need a backup feed from someone.

Yeah I'd rather the takedowns to keep occurring like they do because a $15 block news account will last me 10 years at the current usage rate. The big H company loves their DMCA requests but they're no major issue looking at my logs.
