for those who haven't had the pleasure, this is my favorite beer of all time and the ultimate example of what whiskey-barrel aging with a beer should be. it's big and boozy without being ridiculous. if getting hit by a brick can be subtle, that's what this is.

let's just hope this doesn't mean the quality suffers, though...

While not my favorite beer of all time, I had a 12oz bottle of the 2008 vintage a couple months ago and it was intense. It was amazing but it took me well over an hour to drink the whole bottle.

I really wish that there weren't so many sours with cherry flavor. Cherries are one of the few things that I really, really can't stand the flavor of.

I feel like every other sour I look up seems to have cherry as a flavor descriptor, and I'm super hesitant to pick up a bottle of many well known sours as a result (La Roja, 3 Fonteinen Oude Kriek, Supplication).

The only thing I've ever been able to drink with cherry flavor and not be completely repulsed by is Cherry Coke/Pepsi, and I only drink a can of either one of those maybe once, or twice a year.

Tomorrow I'm going to be picking up a bottle of 3 Fonteinen Gueze, and also a Belgian Quad. I haven't decided if I want to try Rochefort 10, or Abt. 12. I've never tried a quad before, so it will be my first look at the style.

Opened my Ommegang Aphrodite. Was going to drink a can or two of Shift, but with the heat and humidity today, raspberries were calling my name. I forgot how good this was, for a fruit-based beer. One of the few that uses raspberries and manages to exhibit some self-control and not go way overboard on the sweetness. Other raspberry beers taste like candy to me - this one reminds me of the actual fruit. The pear flavors still make it through the Brett, which is really nice. I almost want to open Seduction next, but I've got work in the morning and no one to share with.

I can't stand that fake mediciney cherry flavor either, so I can assure you that doesn't come through in La Roja, at least from what I've had on tap. The Grand Reserve version also does not have a prominent cherry flavor, or if it does, its not that horrible sickly sweet version you might hate.

Schneider-Weisse's version of this beer was one of my Siebel class's staples while we were in Munich. Partially because some of us were going through hop withdrawal. :v: The waitresses at the main Schneider-Weisse beer hall on Marienplatz are hilariously reluctant to serve it, too.

The Schneider/Brooklyn is probably my favorite collaboration result, but I'm also a fan of Victory's version of Saison du Buff, as well as the Bruery/CCB Marrón Acidifié. Many of the others people listed here are good too. The Stone/Brewdog Bashah is probably the most palatable Brewdog beer I've ever had. :v:

drank my bottle of Westbrook's Mexican Cake this evening and i'm not sure i've had a sweeter beer outside of Southern Tier. like, if i took a sip and then licked my lips, i could taste sweet. the beer had a fair amount of roastiness, along with a lot of vanilla, but the sweetness was really too much and the peppers couldn't do enough in the finish to balance it out. interesting, but not that great.

A few other thoughts...

A shop around me has Stone's saison du buff for $0.99, their tag for it says "only a buck, it's still good, really!" I am skeptical.

I wish I'd done the same when buying Rogue's XS Imperial Stout. This is a terrible beer, I'm smelling almost nothing but a faint alcohol and spice reminding me of B.O. and the same with the taste. To me, their blend of surly service (typical of just about any shithole dive bar really) is better than the pretentious hipster vibe that comes off at some "premier" beer bars in other parts of the country. I do admit that neither is ideal, but this particular bar has a reputation for pure lack of respect towards customers, so it's unfortunate that no one gave you a heads up. I happened to go during a non-peak time so it wasn't so bad and I actually managed to have a good conversation with a bartender about what I need to be trying while I'm there. You also gotta consider they are charging some pretty low prices in an expensive city.

If you can make it to Beer Revolution, that is by far the best beer bar I've been to in the entire US.

I've never had that from it, it's always been an acceptable white. Bad or poorly-treated keg.

Beergeekery: Blanch de Bruxelles isn't made in Brussels, it's made miles away in Quenast. So Jean Van Roy's zwanze for 2010, which is most definitely made right in the middle of Brussels, was a white beer he named Blanche de Quenast.

I've heard good things about it, but is it really worth $120? A few of the salons sounded pretty awesome (Terror of Terroir, Odell Woodcut, Rare Beers of Tarheel State), assuming you got a decent amount to sample. And one thing I'm curious about, since this is so huge, could I expect something like say, SXSW/GABF, where the side events are a better use of time/money? I already read that BeerAdvocate's putting together an event that Saturday.

To be fair, sometimes people ask for the strongest or most unusual beer without having a clue whether they even enjoy the style, and bartenders often like to give recommendations and steer people in the direction of something they'll like. The bartender may have just worded his or her question poorly. Personally, I've generally had good service at the Map Room and enjoy stopping by once in a while.

Hopleaf, however, is almost as notorious as the Toronado for having dickbag bartenders, and for good reason. In my experience, and those of my friends, the bartenders tend to be inattentive, rude, and not terribly knowledgeable about the beer. If it weren't for their excellent kitchen and great selection - as well as having a nice location in Andersonville - I'd never go. As it is, I find myself patronizing the other good bars in Chicago far more often.

Really though, I'm stumped as to why bars like Hopleaf and Toronado get away with fuckstickery so regularly. Beer is supposed to bring people together, not be another excuse to be a dick and make yourself feel superior! You're supposed to advocate beer and bring more people into the fold, not drive them away! Attitudes like that are the entire reason the term "beer snob" still exists.

I've had Blanche de Bruxelles a few times, and I've never tasted any diacetyl in it. It tends to be a pretty solid Belgian witbier. Either the keg was off or the bar's lines were filthy.

Speaking of witbier, I made a stop at Revolution Brewery for the first time in a while yesterday, and their Bottoms-Up Wit is still one of my favorite American-made examples of the style. Creamy in body but still refreshing, with nice wheat tartness and citrus aroma. I followed it with their Poetic Justice, an English bitter made with a newer variety of hop called Sonnet. Does anybody have experience with this one? Supposedly it's a relative of the Goldings lineage, and it definitely had some nice floral, earthy English hop character to it.
