Think I might take a half day friday to drive up and attend this Evil Twin showcase (http://www.thefarmerscabinet.com/evil-twin-showcase-w-jeppe/812/), anything in particular I shouldn't miss/or ones i should stay away from? Can't try them all because I'll have to drive home.

Josh Wow posted:I'm gonna be in Madison for two weeks starting this Sunday, where should I go? East Side: Ale Asylem (close to the airport) is one of the best breweries in the state. Their Bedlam seasonal is out, and it's really good. Hopalicious and Ambergeddon are also good. Malt House A huge beer (and whiskey) selection. It's in an old Civil War-era building with no TV's, making it a very unique place to drink. Other noteables: Alchamy Cafe, Dexters. Capital / State Street: Old Fashioned As mentioned, 52 taps, something like 200 beers total, really friendly staff that can help you navigate them, and great food. Downside: always.super.loving.packed. But, always worth it. Great Dane One of the older brewpubs around (I believe?), they have a couple beers that are really solid - Crop Circle Wheat, Stone of Scone Scotch Ale, John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt come to mind. Good food as well, especially for the diversity. The brat and bacon pretzel burger is delicious and fattening. Essen Haus German bar, with German beer. I've never heard anyone recommend the food, but they do boots, and that is fun. Coopers Tavern A bigger focus on international beers, which makes it more expensive than other places. But, another place with a big beer selection. Memorial Union If the weather actually gets back to 60, 70 degree days, this is a must. One of the most beautiful places to get absolutely loving hammered. Other places to check out: Capital Taphaus, Vintage. Never go to: Brats, Johnny O's, Brothers. Further west: Brasserie V My favorite burger in Madison, and the home to over 150ish beers, mostly Belgiums. Vintage They have a bar near State Street, but this is the brewery. The food is a little more upscale, and I think they have more beers. Oh, you're coming the first week of May? Good mother loving call. If you need an accomplice, feel free to shoot me a PM. edit: Just remembered, if you have a car, a good day trip is to go to New Glarus in the morning, take the brewery tour, than hit up the Grumpy Troll on your way back for dinner - I've heard their pizza is amazing. To any VA folks who might be less well-informed than I am: Old Curmudgeon is out and about. Picked myself up a 4-pack since I've never had it. Can't wait to try one. Also, I tried out a beer on tap the other night called "BBBadass" but for the life of me I can't find it on the internet anywhere. I think it was a black belgian of some sort. Really smokey and not at all what I was expecting.

Biscotti and Soft DK are both good. Haven't had Imperial Biscotti. Yin and Yang are their standards and both worth a try, but wouldn't do them before the other 3 listed. Had Katz Pis this weekend and was not impressed as all. I've had all of these, by the way, on tap. I love you, Phil's!

The Mikkeler/3F collaboration Boogoop is boozy as hell and totally forgettable. It's too bad that my introduction to such a storied brewery is so mediocre. Maybe if I knew what they were going for this would have more appeal, but all I'm getting is some cloves and cinnamon and way too much alcohol.

Last time I was there for a barrel aged beer night (including variants of Bourbon County), the place was wall to wall packed. Nothing about the description makes me think it would be good. Does it taste like salty oyster juice + alcohol? I did a bacon tasting at Paddy Long's once and, yeah, by the end we were stacking up like cordwood. It was fun, but really packed. I was tempted to skip the movies & brave it, until I realized the beers that sounded the most interesting to me have the greatest chance of being gross.

I finally went to the Taproom in Lancaster, PA. They serve beer from Spring House Brewing Company. I happened to go with a friend on "Oyster Fest," and of course they had an oyster stout on tap. We got a sample, and it was not at all what I was expecting - not "fishy," you know, and I guess it tasted more sort of...open? Than your average stout. Hard to describe. I wouldn't order it, necessarily, but I'm more open to the idea now then I was. I ended up getting a pineapple pale ale that was, surprisingly, delicious. Very strong and unmistakeable taste of pineapple, so you do have to like it, but I was shocked at how well it complemented the bitterness of the hops. The food is good too! My friend got the fried oyster sandwich and said it was great - high praise, coming from a foodie like her - and I got the mile high nachos. Nachos are an easy thing to do, and it's in the extras where a restaurant really proves itself. The jalapenos were relatively fresh, the chili was solid enough to actually be served on its own, and the guacamole was almost authentic. Okay, that doesn't sound like a glowing review, but it actually exceeded my expectations and I'd like to go back soon. If you're in downtown Lancaster, it's a very decent place to get lunch. Service is a little slow, but you can see how busy they are, and they're still friendly and helpful.

Most of them have a very similar feel, I'd say the closest in their year-round catalog is Maximus Double IPA. It's a little less malty, but still close.

I've been drinking beer for about half my life, and every few years new horizons open up to me. After spending many years insisting IPAs were "not my thing" I find myself snatching them up this Spring for some reason. It is promising to me that tastes change; it means more things to experience even as death creeps closer (yay mortality!). Anyway. I'll be heading down for a family trip with a slew of non-drinkers to Florida in a few weeks. I'll be spending a couple days in Ocala and then a week on Sanibel Island, right off Fort Myers. I did some quick scanning and didn't see anything astounding to hit as far as brewpubs, and I probably won't be dragging my family on some big expedition to some exotic locale. That said, any particular local brands to FL I should try to sample while I'm down there, if the opportunity arises?

Holy cow, I wish I'd known that Sam Adam's Cream Stout was this good months ago. It's pretty much Left Hand's Milk Stout with a caramel profile instead of the cocoa. Both are excellent beers though and I'm glad they exist.

Cascade Brewing in Portland taps a live barrel of sour beer every Tuesday at their brewpub. They do this by hammering a tap into the barrel. Two weeks ago, there were a few problems with the tapping... That's Black Raspberry sour beer being sprayed everywhere. They got the gusher under control, but it made a huge mess. I got there shortly after it happened and it was all over the ceiling, bar, walls, and even on tables 10 feet away.

I could keep my family warm with that blanket statement. After Sam Adams Cream Stout I went on to their Noble Pils, which I'm still not a fan of but I appreciate it as a nice refreshing warm weather beer. Cherry Wheat was next and it's pretty overwhelming with cherries compared to what I remember it being 4 years ago.
