I can't imagine Lucas actually put down those words as EU guidelines back in 1977, and yet no author even mentioned midi-chlorians in the following 22 years. Especially given stuff like Dark Empire and the Jedi Academy series that focused a lot on using the Force/detecting Force users. And there's also the fact that a number of authors, judging from their negative reactions, only heard of midi-chlorians from Phantom Menace, which would be strange if Lucas told them about them in his EU guidelines. I call BS.

Denning's characterisation of Tahiri in the last LOTF book was similarly dubious. The impression I sometimes get from his writing is that he wants the EU to be taken as serious, adult literature that's too sophisticated for kids, but more often than not it ends up coming off as a caricature of what a fourteen-year old fanboy thinks is mature.

IIRC Tahiri is like mid-30s and Denning had her try to seduce teenaged Ben or something. I just finished Apocalypse and that was the worst novel I have ever read. I remember I liked Denning after star by star, but he is horrible now. Is it just me or have they diminished Jacens character to make it seem like he was a dick just to be a dick, rather than someone who had a serious internal conflict? My co-workers have become bored with me knowing the answers to their Star Wars questions and trivia; they've come up with a question I consider rather pedantic and non-trivia, but good for the goonhorde. In the original trilogy, how many humans die on-screen and are confirmed dead? The on-screen and death confirmations are important because the destruction of the Death Star and Alderaan are not counted. I'm thinking the number will be fairly low due the ambiguity of a lot of deaths of Stormtroopers in armor, falling off random things (or into random things) and other miscellany. I'm going to start watching them all again tonight for a good count, but results to compare against are helpful!

That is up for debate right now, but I would say yes, as well as the pilots whose fighters are shown exploding with no ejection. Another good question would be if named non-humans who are decently established like Jabba count or if near-humans like Greedo or Barada count. If they can talk, they probably count.

I've only read the first two issues, so it's still pretty early to see how it will all turn out, but I'm enjoying it a lot so far. I'd definitely recommend it, especially if the background to the creation of the Jedi and the KOTOR era are things that interest you. Another comic I would highly suggest, by the same author, is Agent of the Empire. The first arc just finished, and it's drat fun overall. It was billed as James Bond meets Star Wars and it didn't disappoint - imagine a lot of the classic Connery-era Bond cliches in a Star Wars setting, and I mean that in the best possible way. It's a combination that fits surprisingly well.

My favourite comic series was Republic (which was originally entitled Star Wars when it began in the late 1990s). Most of the important story arcs were also written by Jon Ostrander (who's writing Dawn Of the Jedi and Agent Of the Empire, and also wrote Legacy).

A little late to the party, just finished reading Apocalypse. It seems like FotJ was going in a decent direction until the last two books messed everything up. Nope guys, you can't have a happy ending after reading about billions of people being cooked alive in Coruscant's undercity. Abeloth is still alive and Vestara has in the space of two books fallen from a likable character to a child murdering psychopath because God forbid there ever be lasting interaction between a Sith and a Jedi that isn't them horrifically murdering each other or getting converted one way or the other. Tahiri and Fett taking down an avatar of Abeloth was pretty cool, but three avatars going down in about as many seconds, one being beaten by a pair of starved and dehydrated kids is pretty sad for the most powerful force being ever. Also Jacen's motivation for not telling Luke about his dreams still makes no sense upon his explanation. Great, you saw Allana with a dark side dude, I still don't understand why you don't go to the Jedi Grand Master for help. But eh, at least Corran Horn kills a dude by landing on him with a girder. That makes up for a lot.

I went and found the first one, and I enjoyed Dawn of the Jedi. I'm going to grab the next two tonight, hopefully these don't get ruined, or canceled too early. I like how it's a completely fresh start for the EU.

I'm already pleasantly surprised by the setting, i.e. Somewhere in the time between the founding of the Praxeum on Yavin 4 and the Vong invasion. I'm so tired of every book/trilogy/whatever taking place 5 or 6 years after the previous one, and I am also tired of there being things plotted out for just about every single day within 3 years of any of the original trilogy movies, so having a story set in a period where there aren't all that many other stories going on is nifty and welcome.

I was reading through more of the Essential Guide to Warfare today, and there were a few more interesting things I noticed in it: The idea that Palpatine came to power to save the galaxy from the Yuuzhan Vong is basically dismissed as pro-Imperial historical revisionism. The same with the idea that Thrawn was recruited by Palpatine to fight the Vong. Actually, it also establishes that Thrawn's fleet in the Thrawn Trilogy (that Pellaeon safeguarded since Endor) was the remnant of Death Squadron from ESB/ROTJ; for some reason, I really like that continuity. Starkiller and the TFU plot of creating the Rebel Alliance is almost entirely ignored. There's one small reference to it (mention of the Rebel leaders almost being captured during the Corellian Treaty signing) but that's it. Actually, Juno Eclipse has a little bio sidebar, but I think even that completely ignored Starkiller. It's also indicated that Ysanne Isard might not have been killed in the last X-Wing book, but be kept alive without trial in a secret New Republic prison. It's also said that Isard was the one who organized the Imperial attack on Coruscant from the start of Dark Empire (her death/"death" is set as happening concurrent to the beginning of the attack) which might actually make a lot of sense...as I recall from DE, I think the Imperial attack on Coruscant was supposed to have devolved into chaos because the leadership quickly broke apart, and her absence would be a good justification. It also implies that Palpatine drove a lot of his commanders insane through the Force in DE, which I think is as good a justification of people's actions there as any. All in all, I really like the Essential Guide to Weapons. It's "just" a sourcebook but it's written in an engrossing and well-flowing way and I think if you're interested in the subject, then just reading the bare information from it on Wookieepedia is not going to convey the best parts of it.

When it comes to EU canon in general, I tend to view every piece of media as an in-universe "based on a true story" scenario. Every book, comic, and tv show is loosely based on "real" events that took place in their Universe, but the story is told after the fact. I find viewing the EU this way makes things a lot easier to swallow and it's much easier to disregard certain things and/or assume certain plot elements are out of context (like the palaptine/vong connection).

I suppose this is the best place to ask this, a while back I remember reading about a fan-produced edit of A New Hope that blended the original film with the updated/re-released version and took the good visual updates and threw out all the junk that Lucas added. Does this ring a bell for anyone?
