He should sell the roll cage separately for 250, but only to the person that buys the car for 500.

Typically, you purchase a car for less than $500, do a bunch of work to make it race-ready, and then race it. In this case, we have over $3,000 in the car, including the new engine, wiring and ECU ($900), the rollcage ($550) and all of the other race prep work.

There is no way this will ever come back to haunt the next owner who tries to race it in lemons. no way.

Rightfully so, since it's been garaged for 25 years

What a poor rate of return on that investment, though

Speaking as a previous owner of an '87 GTI 16v - leaks and rust. Specifically it is concerning that there isn't any mention of mileage on the car. If it is on the original engine then it could very plausibly be well past 200k, if it has been swapped/rebuilt, then you'll often see leaking especially at the transmission.

The ignition system may be worth peeking at - the plugs on the 16v are a pain in the rear end to get to so a bored or lazy owner will probably ignore them far longer than reasonable. Also the distributor is in a stupid place and oil likes to leak into the cap and coat the rotor.

It could be a fantastically fun car but it carries with it the usual Old German Car caveat that inevitably things will break and will be obnoxiously expensive to replace, moreso if you don't have the skills or equipment to do the work yourself.

Rock solid blazer with a new 2.8 v6 , 5 speed manual transmission, 4 wheel drive, with brand new tires, brand new shocks, new front C.V. axles, new front and rear brakes, freshly turned rotors, new water pump, new steering pump, new starter, new battery, new window motor, new hoses, new belts, new rear window shocks, the rear end has just been sealed and serviced and new gear oil, new fuel pump, just serviced the throttle body, freshly charged A/C, there is a special tow kit with the spare tire mounted on the outside for more inside room. I put a new exhaust system on it with a flowmaster muffler and went up to a 2.5" pipe, it gave it a nice throaty sound . The truck has 192.200 miles on it all the service has been done in the last couple of months. NADA values this truck at $5400 average retail, 2900 low retail. The body is very straight it has never been wrecked. There are a couple little dinks on it and I am in the process of fixing them as I speak. I will be asking more for it when I do. The truck has a 2" lift on it, I don't know how it was done, but that's what the previous owner told me . He did the lift when he put the tow hitch on it. Its not a bumper hitch. I have a couple of small things still to do to the truck before selling it. I love this little truck and I really don't want to sell it. I have put a lot of work into it and was planning on doing more if I were to keep it. This truck has been used primarily for taking my boat to the lake and during really bad weather. It's an awesome four wheeler and is very torquey because I built the motor with brand new heads with high performance cams and custom ground and seated valves all new springs and had the cylinders bored for high perforrnance . The clutch was replaced when the engine was built and I installed the heaviest duty clutch I could find exceeding factory specs . The U joints were also replaced at that time. This would be a great four wheeler for somebody who wanted a rock solid toy ,or it would be great for a gift for a son or daughter who needs a good , safe vehicle for going back and forth to school up north. Bad weather would never be an issue. The truck has cruise control from the factory and power locks and windows and rear hatch window with defroster. Call me @ XXX.XXX.XXXX if you have any more questions . I will consider any reasonable offers, this truck will be sold as is, no warranty implied . I have represented this vehicle as best and as honestly as possible. Thank you, Dave.

That's the worst part - I would too. If it has the same wheels on it that the spare seems to indicate, it's got $400 worth of wheels on it. If the hood is straight and even one bumper you just got the rest for free.

If the front cover is good, there's another $150. Block and heads are another $400.

It wouldn't be a terribly difficult parting project, with about 2 tons of truck left over for scrap getting you another few hundred bucks.
