A few weeks ago I discovered Purity Ring thanks to the GBS youtube thread and I thought they were pretty rad. Today (yesterday?) they released a new song and it is also rad. Is there a megathread I can follow for similar music? Recommendations of similar bands also greatly appreciated. vvvvvv Thanks! Listening to some stuff now. Yeah Purity Ring is pretty deck. I came to them by way of chill wavey stuff. So maybe Memory Cassettes, Washed Out, Chairlift, Neon Indian, or Youth Lagoon. If you want a harder dancey angle I think Grimes and like Crystal Castles might work.

These days I pretty much only listen to garage, modern rockabilly, and Springsteen influenced folk-punk. Are there any bands in the vein of Gaslight Anthem, The Hold Steady, The Loved Ones, Frank Turner, Lucero, Drive-By Truckers or Titus Andronicus? On the garage tip, who sound like The Fleshtones or Steve Wynn? And where should I start with Steve Wynn/Dream Syndicate? He blew me away last week. Is there any other modern rockabilly bands with the energy of Devin, Jim Jones Revue, or Jon Spencer?

Would anyone have any particular recommendations for things that sound like this: http://soundcloud.com/iguanodon/witchcraft-valley http://soundcloud.com/iguanodon/diabloceratops or this: http://coowoo.bandcamp.com/track/amanda-knox http://coowoo.bandcamp.com/track/stay-forever I feel like my music library is lacking in these two directions and would like to rectify that. In the former I like the strong beat, how its rhythms fit together and just generally how things are layering over each other. In the latter I like the lightness and the sort of flow and energy it has, I suppose (I am apparently really bad at describing music). is that good fucked around with this message at 17:52 on Apr 28, 2012 |

I am in need of evil music. I want music that instills fear into its listeners. Not like metal or hard rock, which bash you over the head with its death and power. I'm more looking for the subtly evil bands out there that give a sense of haunt and unease. Underlying creepiness, I guess. Ideally it would have classical sensibilities and well structured, but I'm open to whatever. Echo and the Bunnymen, My Blood Valentine, the Zombies in certain songs, Wire in certain songs, Velvet Underground; they all have some of this. So yea, I know that's a weird description. Hopefully someone understands it and can help. Thanks in advance.

Bohren und Der Club of Gore are a pretty creepy jazz outfit. The Caretaker specializes in altering old records to sound like old haunted relics. Sephiroth just makes good ol' dark ambient. Even though he's technically affiliated with metal, Alcest does very innovative stuff with black metal elements.

Its kind of cheating since they all did music for horror movies. Goblin would probably be the best bet as music that stands on its own strengths and doesn't need the movie. Or His Name Is Alive, Current 93, Dead Can Dance, and This Mortal Coil too.

I'll throw Suicide into the mix, since they made the most unsettling song I've ever heard: Frankie Teardrop. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5wJQkvSoOQ Lydia Lunch covered this song, and she might also fit the bill (as nadabolt mentioned, there's plenty of creepy post-punk). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSp3JIsKKv8 edit: And if we can include covers, Y Pants singing Lesley Gore's "That's The Way Boys Are" and skewering its latent misogyny by making the song terrifying. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSDBADnao2s double edit: while it's probably not the sound you're after (though the lyrics are about blood + guts), I can't help posting this old gem from public access television. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMo3a7XaWaI faux pair fucked around with this message at 08:55 on May 1, 2012 |
