Honestly, I don't think any of their albums come close to their live shows.

They have about 5000 albums under 100 different names but basically they are all Makoto Kawabata + other people. Lots of the older Melting Paraiso albums are pretty badly produced and can be tough to listen to. I think the heavier Cosmic Inferno albums are more interesting.

Also don't miss their album with Gong, Acid Motherhood—some absolute classics on that.

I really wish this list had been around years ago. I made the very poor decision of starting with La Novia.

Yeah Purity Ring is pretty deck. I came to them by way of chill wavey stuff. So maybe Memory Cassettes, Washed Out, Chairlift, Neon Indian, or Youth Lagoon.

If you want a harder dancey angle I think Grimes and like Crystal Castles might work.

I am in need of evil music. I want music that instills fear into its listeners. Not like metal or hard rock, which bash you over the head with its death and power. I'm more looking for the subtly evil bands out there that give a sense of haunt and unease. Underlying creepiness, I guess.

Ideally it would have classical sensibilities and well structured, but I'm open to whatever.

Echo and the Bunnymen, My Blood Valentine, the Zombies in certain songs, Wire in certain songs, Velvet Underground; they all have some of this.

So yea, I know that's a weird description. Hopefully someone understands it and can help.

Thanks in advance.

Goblin, John Carpenter, Alan Howarth, Jerry Goldsmith? Its kind of cheating since they all did music for horror movies. Goblin would probably be the best bet as music that stands on its own strengths and doesn't need the movie.

Elend should work. Its a now disbanded project from two French composers who, for their first trilogy of albums, took inspiration from Milton's Paradise Lost and some Catholic liturgy to create some pretty dark and violent music which puts most metal to shame. I admit it can border on the silly though.

Du tréfonds des ténèbres
The Luciferian Revolution

Their second, and last, trilogy moved away from the synthesizers and the Catholic imagery and a more neoclassical sound i guess, also using a real chamber orchestra instead of relying on synthesizers. It improved their sound a lot, while it retained the violent nature of their songs.

Lots of good suggestions so far. I'll throw Suicide into the mix, since they made the most unsettling song I've ever heard: Frankie Teardrop.
