Monk's Blood is really tasty. I've taken a few home. It's a nice dark Belgian with quite a bit going on in the palate. 21st's best brew, I think, was the Ninkasi collab they did - Allies Win the War.

I think chicory stout is actually one of my favorite beers that DFH makes. To me the chicory just sort of blends in and gives the whole drink a rounder, deeper flavor. It's the only DFH beer I am tempted to buy with any regularity, but then there is always at least one other beer in the store that is cheaper that I like more, so I rarely get it.

Also I have found Shmaltz to be entirely mediocre in every way. Pretty much my favorite thing about them is the beer garden they run on Coney Island.

I didn't find Hell or Highwater all that offensive, but then again I was camping and hung over as gently caress when I had it. That, and I actually enjoy eating the rinds (which is the only thing the beer tastes like.)

Ok, good. I'll give the stout a try. When I think of nauseating beer the first thing that pops into my head is that loving eight pack from hell. Don't wanna do that again. I like the little glass and the beer menorah though that came with it though.

I completely disagree with this, and I almost uniformly hate fruity or sweet beers. Of course, my introduction to it was a freshly poured glass that they garnish with an actual watermelon slice, so maybe canning can come off worse for the wear. Still, it's genuine watermelon flavor, not fake candy 'watermelon' and I find it very refreshing to have just one on a hot day sometimes.

Meanwhile, I think their IPA is amazingly mediocre, nothing distinguishing or interesting about it.

GUM CHEWING INTENSIFIES
I've had a debate with a friend of mine on beer. My friend Andrew is allergic to alcohol to the point that two shots of vodka will put him under, but he still enjoys the occasional beer. He's a fan of German and Mexican beer and thinks all American beer is swill. I told him I'm a fan of Sam Adam's Boston Lager and he got after about it, teasing that it was a "White" beer (I'm Mexican-American, by the way). He said I should be drinking Mexican beers and with lime. My take is if I have to add something to a beer, it's not worth drinking. A beer should stand on its own without any aid. As you may guess, I'm not a fan of orange ales either (Blue Moon, Shocktop, etc.) I also think that a person shouldn't criticize my taste in alcohol if they are allergic to it. Any thoughts?

Tangentially related to the subject of Mexican beer, I tried a couple of 5 Rabbit Cerveceria's beers recently and think they have a lot of potential to brew some great stuff. 5 Rabbit and 5 Lizard are pretty solid and I know people that really like 5 Vulture. Nothing has struck me as exceptional, but I get the feeling that they're gonna do something impressive in a year or two.

Yeah, industrial corn juice beers really don't represent what's going on and I wholly approve adding fruit juice/syrup/whatever to them, if only to remove a little more "beer" from the can.

Either your friend is an excellent troll or a loving idiot, hard to say. I'm not opposed to the concept of serving fruit with beer, but it shouldn't be because the base beer is gross and needs to be covered up by fruit to be tolerable (see: Corona).

I agree with this in regards to Hell and High, it's not a bad summer beer, with the taste being more Real Watermelon and not the candy watermelon taste. Least fav of the 21st line-up but I don't think they make a bad beer really. Their IPA is Solid, though I find it to be a more balanced Hop/Malt IPA than a hop bomb. Back In Black is a nice solid Black IPA as well. Monk's Blood is a nice American Dark Belgin (and if you enjoy it, pick up a 4-pack as it's going on a Hiatus for at least I think 2 years). Bitter American is a tasty flavor-full sessionable PA/IPA. Fireside Chat is good at Christmas time, but the spices are pretty heavy. I am in agreement with anyone who said their Allies Win The War was the best they made, really was a shame it seems to be a one time colabo. Hop Crisis was a nice experiment as well.

Edit: Also I't doesn't mean anything to the beer, but their Box and Can artwork is awesome as well.

Copy/pasting from another forum where I sperg about beer since I know we have some Colorado goons up in here...

Spent the last week doing a road trip through Colorado with my wife. Being originally from New England, it still kind of blows my mind that you can do a week long road trip within one state but that's another topic. We hit up some breweries and brewpubs, and the best and worst kind of surprised me. Sadly the best breweries are basically impossible to get outside of their home towns.

Glenwood Canyon Brewpub in Glenwood Springs was really great. They had a whole slew of medals on the wall from the World Beer Cup, and lived up to them. I don't think they distribute (besides growlers) which is a shame, because I'd buy their stuff over a bunch of readily available mediocre stuff. Their stout in particular was a standout, very complex, blending bitter dark chocolate and coffee with a sweet finish. It's like my platonic ideal of a stout :h: Very nice facility and food, too.

Steamworks Brewing in Durango was also way better than expected. The only beer of theirs I've seen anywhere is their Colorado Kolsch, which must not travel well cause it always kind of sucks and once in particular it tasted like a glass of buttered popcorn. By contrast, everything we drank at the brewery was freaking A+. Had an ESB, an IPA, an Irish Red and a Wit and I'd buy any of them again without hesitation. The Kolsch seems to be their flagship which is kind of a shame, but I'd say to try anything else of theirs you see. They also had a SUPER nice restaurant and bar. All of the servers are certified Cicerones (basically a newish "beer sommelier" program) and were extremely friendly and helpful. Food was awesome, and their specialty is a full on cajun fish boil dumped directly onto your table. Amazing.

Our last stop was Ska Brewing, also in Durango, which was a bit of a letdown. They have a nice taproom, but the waitstaff ranged from preoccupied to downright surly which got things off to an inauspicious start, especially after Steamworks. Anything unique or interesting was sold out (but still on the handwritten menu for some reason), leaving behind just their readily available stuff which is pretty blah. Had a thin and boring porter, and their "Mexican Logger" which literally tastes exactly like Corona and even came with a lime, but at craft beer prices. Basically their stuff was gimmicky and bad, and their servers were borderline hostile. Would not recommend.

First off, Dogfish Head's Chicory Stout is rrrrreally niiiiice. It's smooth & remarkably clean for a stout with a smooth, smoky chicory flavor holding the profile together and I think... cola nut, maybe, lurking in the background?

Tried Lagunita's A Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale today and, I gotta say, it was the best thing I've had by them. Brown Sugga and their Pils did nothing for me, but this delivered. It was the thickest, creamiest American wheat I've ever had, almost like a European, but retained the hops I'm used to in American wheats. A nice, grassy hops at that.

Finished my double and came home with an NB LOF Biere de Mars. Nice, subtle flavors. Not too complex. Great beer for people who like mild Belgians like Blue Moon, but want to start branching out. Will be recommending it to that crowd at work this week. Also, hosted a very successful tasting.

Sweetwater Happy Ending (American Imperial Stout), Laughing Dog Sneaky Pete (a killer Hopslam-ish DIPA), Blue Point Spring Fling (American Pale Ale), Bison Honey Basil (think DFH Saison du Buff finished with honey), Abita Strawberry, and Laughing Dog Huckleberry Cream Ale. Overall, knocked it out of the park. Spent last night and this morning reading up on each beers best-guess recipe and each brewery's history. A lot of people went home having learned a lot while drinking some cool, unique, but accessible beers.

Most popular? The Sneaky Pete DIPA. Even people who told me straight-up that they hated IPAs ended up taking a bottle or two home. Second place was the Honey Basil. Third the Sweetwater. Huckleberry got an honorable mention as best-rated fruit beer for most. It's sub-4% and has excellent flavor. Really sessionable and a hit among the girlfriends and wives (and some guys) who came along and told me they hated beer. No, they just hate beer-flavored beer.

All-in-all, talked nearly non-stop for eight hours, poured probably four hundred samples. Lots of fun. Coming up soon is American Craft Beer Week (May 14-20). If you're around the Triangle in NC - hit me up. PM or my username @gmail.com

Their Biere de Mars contains Brett, although I don't know if it's added before or after pasteurization. If after, it could change a lot over time. In the past I've had it tasting pretty drat funky but I can't comment on this year's batch, only had it fresh and it's more fruity than anything.

Cool, I'm up in Winston and I might be down for some of that week. I went to Raleigh yesterday for the Brewgaloo thing, and really wish I had skipped it. A loving mess...lines were 20-30 minutes long, everyone was running out of beer (at FIVE o'clock...this was supposed to last until 9 pm), two lines I was in had to break up because the tent we were waiting on tapped their kegs. Ended up getting 2 beers over 2 hours, and giving the rest of my tickets to some people coming in. Hope they had better luck.

However, I did end up eating at the Busy Bee Cafe, and it was fantastic. Started with a Kasteel Rouge, which was pretty tasty, although it sort of reminded me of a Lindeman's cherry cough drop. Then had a '10 JW Lee's Harvest barleywine (from a cask) paired with a flank steak and blue cheese butter...loving perfect together. I'm not very experienced with barleywines, but most that I've had were sweeter than this. It was light, and sort of dry. A lot of whiskey/bourbon character to it, and it matched up so well against the blue cheese. I'd like to do a pairing with just the two, but I've never noticed a bottle of JW's around here.
