Not sure I really learnt anything I didn't already know, but I found this an interesting diversion while I caught up on the washing up:

One nice upgrade for the NEX-F3 over the C3 - looks like it will support the optical viewfinder accessory. Nice to see Sony make that change, it seemed like a needless feature to strip out - don't you want as many customers as possible to buy accessories?

OK, so I've been sitting here thinking about what lens to buy next for the camera, and am leaning towards one of the really wide lenses. Like the 14/2.5. When I had my Nikon D70S, I had an 18-55, a 50/1.4 and an 18-200 VR.

The question I really have is -- I've seen some Sigma/Tamron Micro 4/3 lenses. I know they were often hit or miss for dSLR stuff -- is that the case with this format too? If so, is there one that'd capture what I'm looking to do with a wide prime lens? Or is there a better way to accomplish what I'm going for here (as I've heard of adapters and stuff for lenses)?

For reference, the plan is to shoot fairly heavily outdoors. For awhile, I'll be doing a lot of landscape photography, likely some basic people shots. Not planning to do too terribly much indoors yet, but I would like to also have the fast lens available should that be something I want to do.

Thanks in advance for help with this -- I have the battery for my GF3 charging right now and am fully intending to play with it over the course of this week. Going to make some outings soon for photo ops with friends, so the camera will get some good use!

They have the optical viewfinder for the 16mm lens. It's just a viewfinder though, like you'd see on top of a rangefinder camera. Nothing electronic about it all.

If it's a wide fast prime you want, you really can't go wrong with the 14mm f2.5 panasonic, although it's like $350.

Sigma has a 19mm f2.8 out for m4/3 with is $200 and is also well regarded, especially considering the price.

The Panasonic is the better piece of kit though.

Third option would be the 20mm f1.7 Panasonic pancake but it's in $500 territory.

But for $200 you cannot go wrong with the Sigma 19mm.

No word yet on if it's officially supported by the NEX-F3, but it looks like there's a good chance it will be, based on the mount. (of course it's still a $400 EVF, YIKES!)

Wanna go wide - go with the Panasonic 14
Want slightly less wide AND faster (but more expensive), go with the Panasonic 20
Want slightly less wide and cheaper but not so fast, go with the Sigma 19

The interesting one is the Sigma 30, since there's less clear-cut choice in the 50-60mm field, except for the GODLIKE Panasonic/Leica 25, and the Sigma at $199 is an appealing budget offering for someone who needs similar coverage but can't quite justify the $500+ for a taste of heaven. That's where Sigma is going to really do well on the m43 side of these lenses.

The NEX mount versions are going to be pretty much the opposite, with the Sigma 19 being the desireable lens and then it's a tossup between the Sony and the Sigma for 30mm with both lenses having their own advantages/disadvantages and similar pricing.

The question was about optical finders. The 16mm viewfinder has been available for the NEX system since day one. It was basically Sony's halfassed attempt at having an eye-level finder right from the get-go because they hadn't developed a good electronic one yet.

As for the lenses, all Sony needs to do is release one killer pancake lens and the NEX system will bust wide open.

I'm not sure that will ever happen. I think something about the flange distance and how the Sony sensors react to light coming in at angles is basically making it impossible to make a pancake lens with good optics for the NEX system.

If it was really feasible, a third party would have done it by now. But I think they haven't been able to make one that's worth shooting.

It's sad because even once the supply line issue is ironed out, Sony will still be slow on the draw to release a ~30mm pancake even if they could do it because they'll want to milk the Zeiss 24mm as long as they can.

I'd love to see them do an affordably fast 35 (1.4/1.7?) in roughly the same form factor as the Panasonic 25 or even the 50/1.8 - price it under $400 and most of the NEX folks would consider it a blessing. At least the LA-EA2 owners get the 35/1.8 SAM to fill that space.

I don't think I entirely buy this. Yes, Sony's microlens arrays have struggled to produce great corner-to-corner performance yet, but there's no reason to think that the next generation of sensors from them wouldn't help that significantly.

Considering what Fuji is doing with an even shorter flange distance, not to mention how strong a performer that tiny 23mm f/2 that was on the X100, there's nothing impossible about Sony bringing a solid pancake to the market.

I see a lot of these ads mentioning "Made in Japan". Is there some warranty issue in that regard? I know many Nikon/Canon dSLR lenses bought from overseas won't honor warranties here in the states. Is that the case here? If not, why is "Made in Japan" significant?

I really wish that they could bring the price down on the EVF - I am guessing that eventually it will just be built into the body, or technically obselete and I would just rather put that cash into glass or save it for whenever a more compelling body comes out. I would also guess that at a lower price point, more people would buy it and possibly even turn more profit, but what do I know.

Well aware of the 7 (who isn't?). I meant, an EVF being not only in the top camera of the NEX line but incorporated into the entire series, or at least the mid-level cameras as well. LCD displays change rapidly, and what was once the top of the line will someday be mundane (sometimes much sooner than later). I could see in another two years EVFs being put into many more bodies than nowadays, and if an equivilent body to today's 5N (in future standards) were to come out in a couple years with an EVF in it, I would look back at the purchase of the EVF accessory with regret, wishing I had invested it in glass.

Honestly, 99% of the time I use my 5N, I don't even think about wishing I had an EVF. The only times it comes up as an issue is in bright sunlight when I can barely see the LCD. Not having an EVF makes a camera smaller, lighter and cheaper. It's the prime reason I bought a 5N as opposed to a 7. Frankly, I don't think we'll see a low-end model with an EVF because people who are buying a low-end model are either moving up from a P&S where they're used to shooting with an LCD or they're buying the low-end model as a backup or pocket camera and don't want the added bulk of an EVF. I think it'll stay the way it is with one or two premium/pro models having the EVF and the rest having it as an option.

To see how far we've come with photography with a finder, think about the gesture people make when talking about taking a photo. They don't hold their hands to their face like they used to. Now they hold their hands outstretched instead.

I find that kind of cultural evolution really interesting. I have even started to see "no photos" stickers on store windows (the picture of a camera in the red circle with a line through it) that now show stencils of what look like iPhones instead of "proper" cameras.

code:
MTF-50 max avg
Sony 16mm f/2.8 665 490
Sony 24mm f/1.8 475 450

Granted, it almost catches up by f/2.8, so I guess the extra $800 is worth it.

I've only had a little bit of time with it tonight, but I love how it feels in hand, just the right amount of size and heft that I know it's there but it still isn't full-on DSLR weight. The base of the LA-EA2 is just about perfect for a counter-grip and it seems pretty snappy with the 35 SAM. I also got the 50 e-mount, and there are a couple (cat)photos in my flickr feed taken with that lens, if you're curious. I'll try and post a more detailed accounting of how I'm liking everything after taking a few more days to really break it in and discover what I love/hate about it.

I have a wrist and a neck strap from him and I think they are great. It's just thick enough to not dig into your wrist and thin enough to not get sweaty underneath. He custom makes them to your size and color specs. Also it's built to last forever.

Here it is on my M6 but it's currently on my X-Pro1

The whole shebang cost me $32 and I feel like I stole his car because it's worth twice that much to me. Like RustedChrome mentioned, he custom makes them when you order it and it definitely feels like it will be around forever. The X100 isn't a super grippy camera to begin with (the hood helps) so it's nice insurance on hot summer days when my hands are sweaty. I keep the Gordy's mounted to a small carabiner on the outside of my daily carry bag when not in use.

(I should have gone up a size and I've since corrected how it is mounted to the lug)

What size is the strap in the NEX photo? debating between regular or long length. Does it feel cramped at all? I don't like a loose wrist strap but I want to be able to reach all the controls. I have regular size wrists but fairly large hands.

These Gordy's straps look awesome by the way.
