Tried out you Had To Be There with the Jim Gaffigan episode and the latest one. Lots of fun, very funny, holy crow do these ladies talk about loving a lot. Honestly, the idea of getting so drunk you end up having sex with someone you don't want to have sex with told as an amusing anecdote is a little disturbing.

That was a pretty good episode, Totally Laime fell off my radar since they hadn't had any particularly interesting guests in a while, but listening to it again reminded that i really like it. I actually like Elizabeth's voice, and I LOVE the theme song, it's short and weird. I've never heard of Hot Karl before, but that story is nuts. A million bucks at 21 and he turns it into art galleries? Awesome. Anyone have any idea who his foster cousin is? I think I only want to know because he wouldn't say her name, and because i'm curious as to who a "Top 5" pornstar would be.

Judge John Hodgman has actually been really great recently. The one kid in the most recent episode though has the most irritating way of pronouncing words with either a single or double T in the middle though. "Li-TTle"

I feel like the Nerdist network is just killing it lately. Between You Made it Weird, The Todd Glass Show, The JV Club, and The Indoor Kids, they've basically got you covered for every day of the week, then throw in the occasional gem from the flagship Nerdist podcast, Pop My Culture, the Writer's Panel, and Thrilling Adventure Hour, the amount of quality content they're producing is insane. Hardwick sure as poo poo knows how to cultivate quality content. None of the other networks even come close and they have ads AND pay/donation bases way more extensively than any show on The Nerdist.

The Jim Jefferies and Eddie Ifft Talk poo poo thread has fallen into the archives now, but Doug Benson was finally on their latest show. Somehow they had never heard of Chatroulette, Doug brings it up for some reason and the last several minutes is them loving around with it and harassing the random shirtless guys that pop up. It's way more entertaining than I'd imagine it would be, and apparently it's going to be continued on into the next show.

I'm thinking about buying a season of Never Not Funny. To the goons who do the primo feed, is there a particularly "classic" past season I should get, or should I just go for the newest one and stay current?

I think season 8 is a particularly strong season with old favorites, new guests and a couple of big gets but the current season is also very good.

If I had to pick a favorite, it'd probably be 4. All classic guests including the first go-around for my favorites Janet Varney, Jon Hamm, and Andy Richter, gobs and gobs, and maybe my favorite NNF episode of all time, 426 with PFT. All it's missing is Jesse Thorn.

FYI-- if you check UYD be sure to start from either the very beginning or somewhere in the first 10eps or so, and continue on even if you thought it was "just ok" because getting to know them makes it funnier later when it does get funnier. at least for a few episodes, if you don't like it at all then whatever.

I always feel a little wary when someone tells me that to enjoy a podcast I have to listen to x number of back episodes and keep listening even if they're blah. It seems like a lot of effort to put in just to kill an hour on my commute.

Oh don't get me wrong, they're very funny right from the start, I just mean that not only does it get even funnier from there on, the effect is doubled if you've heard the early episodes and get all the in-jokes and references. UYD does have a large an seemingly impenetrable canon but I just mean to say that most people would agree that starting right in the middle somewhere is fine but you're also really missing out on a lot if you do. and that's all we should say for now on this because otherwise it always becomes a huge thing. check it, dudes.

I can vouch for UYD taking time to really catch my attention. It probably took me the first thirty to really get into it, but now it's my second favorite podcast, i've gone through the entire backlog, and i can randomly put any episode on, jump to any part, and be wildly entertained. Though I listened to 319 yesterday and it would be just as good an introductory episode as any.

While I did jump into the backlog soon afterward, now that it's triple what it was then, I dunno if I'd have committed the time.

You have to be opened minded for UYD. Their style is very unique and entrenched, and really, compared to other podcasts, it's the most consistent over the years. If you can be okay with recaps of To Catch a Predator, you can follow them from the start.

I was thinking about this the other day, actually, since UYD is by far my favourite podcast and just straight up one of my favourite things ever - is it pretty much the only major comedy podcast made by people in no way involved with the comedy industry? I guess MBMBAM counts although I was under the impression that at least one of them has done some other kind of comedy writing and Justin is managing editor of Joystiq, so it's kind of borderline.

When podcasting was in its infancy, the pool was small enough that complete non-entities could gain traction (eg, Dawn and Drew, or arguably even UYD is old enough). These days, there are thousands of non-insider comedy podcasts, but they're not 'major' because you've never heard of them, and you've never heard of them because they're not 'major' (plus there's no real portal -- only the incestuous comedy networks, or itunes, where shows are featured because they're popular because they're featured). Not that I mind that being the status quo -- maintaining an interesting show either requires getting interesting guests (ie, being an insider) or having a very rare type of personality that can be captivating even in a bubble (ie, Seth). Networks, to some degree, filter for quality in the same way network television is generally better than public access, or stuff on funnyordie is funnier than randomly skipping around youtube, or self-published books are, by and large, poo poo.
