I'm headed to Nashville for the weekend- any recommendations on breweries or brewpubs to check out? I'm getting married in the city this fall, and would love to pick up a keg of a great local beer to have on tap at the wedding. I'll be with my fiancee and mom, neither of whom are huge beer geeks so its a plus if the place has some good eats.

Well you have me there. 2012 is different though, it's only aged for 11 months in the barrel so I'm assuming they changed it. I have a 2011 and a 2012 I'll do a side-by-side comparison soon enough. I've done Abacus/Sucaba 2011/2012 side by sides and they are pretty goddamn close to the same beer, the differences are very very minor. The beer is not aged exclusively in a particular bourbon producers barrels, but many types barrels which includes (well used) wine and brandy barrels and then it is blended. Most of their barrels are bourbon barrels though.

Now that I think of it, I need to go pick up the last few Firestone 2011 Abacus, 2011 Parabola, and 14 this hole in the wall shop has. I'm blown away with how good they all are, Firestone knows their poo poo. I'm definitely going to try smoking a cigar for the next 2011 Parabola I have, that's for sure. Depending on how many of each I find left I may be up for a trade if anyone was looking for them.

There were about 3-4 bottles of each. I don't know their trade value or anything but really I wouldn't mind a small trade of something equally as good, I would really like Surly Darkness for Parabola or Abacus or 14 if that would be considered fair. I'll go back this week and see if it's there still. Edit: I think I'm going to find that beer called Yeastie Boys or something I saw in the store once in memory of MCA. Abita Strawberry Harvest is pretty decent. Smells very strongly of strawberry pulp, not strawberry syrup. From there it's a pretty standard wheat with hints of strawberry interlaced, then finishes with a nice burst of strawberries. Never too sweet, just like their Purple Haze, but this is much cleaner and more enjoyable.

I went to the Founders's event in San Diego intended to get as many different beers as I could and not be shithoused, but I ended up just getting three glasses of KBS - - Was delicious, and I was suprised how well it worked given how much I have disliked other barrel aged stouts. I did get Double Trouble and Dirty Bastard yesterday and was a fan of both.

I finally found a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass, $4.99. I'm actually really excited to use it. I'll be drinking Goose Island's Honkers Ale since it just came to New Jersey. Edit: I really like Honkers Ale, very easy drinking a good flavor for such low ABV. Edit 2: I just opened a Harvistoun Ola Dubh 18 year from February 2009. I think there's some oxidation, but this is pretty good. Mild sweetness of chocolate and mild roasted flavors, but the oak and scotch flavors come forward. I think the flavor I'm trying to pick out is peat, it's very similar to what I taste when I drink Johnny Walker Gold Label. Midorka fucked around with this message at 04:20 on May 5, 2012 |

I love iron hill. Such a good brew pub/restaurant. If you're ever in the philly /new jersey area there are a bunch of locations. I had their saison with some Brett and their #100 which has like 900 lbs of malt and 100 lbs of Centennial hops. Both really solid, their regular lineup is decent but their seasonals are awesome VVV yeah maple shade lazerwolf fucked around with this message at 04:42 on May 5, 2012 |

I go to the Maple Shade one once a month for homebrew meetings and have found their Rising Sun (IPA with Sorachi hops) and Quadfather to be really lacking. I haven't had anything I was huge on. I also had their Pig Iron Porter which was alright. Tomorrow is Big Brew Day there, I want to go but I have work. Oh well. Midorka fucked around with this message at 04:43 on May 5, 2012 |

I opened a bomber of Big Muddy Brewing's Kinkaid Wheat, brewed in Southern Illinois. I bought it because it was $2.99 and I see why it was on the bottom shelf, on sale. It is a very unremarkable wheat beer. Not much in the way of aroma, maybe a watery malt, and the taste is nothing to write home about. I can't really recommend it, but I will try a different style by the brewer and see if the watered down taste is a fluke with the wheat or what. At least it tastes better than Bud Light! I also have a couple bottles of Victory Headwater Pale Ale in the fridge, a few New Glarus Hop Hearty ale, a six pack of Moose Drool, a bomber of Coney Island Sword Swallower, and a bomber of Lakefront Brewery Bridge Burner. I have a fun weekend in store. Midorka posted:They were selling growlers in store? Sorry, I am wrong, the correct term is bomber after a quick Google search and re-reading the OP. Edit: Lazerwolf, since you're close enough to Iron Hill in Maple Shade, make the trip to Roger Wilco in Deptford and get some of the 2011 Abacus/Parabola and a Firestone 14, as well as Blackout Stout. Also go to the Timber Creek Discount Liquors near there it's got some great stuff. Edit 2: I'm not a fan of Curieux from Allagash, I don't see any benefit from the barrel aging here and this is too citrus forward for me. I'm pairing it with a 6 year old cheddar though and it goes well with it and I like the fruity esters at the end, I would have guessed this was wine barrel aged if anything as I'm not picking up any bourbon. I really feel that this is just missing a mark for me really liking it. Midorka fucked around with this message at 05:38 on May 5, 2012 |

So I'm pretty sure a 12 of Torpedo is one of the best (relatively) cheap beer purchases I've made. I've been abstaining from Sierra Nevada for some time based on a few bad experiences, but trying Ruthless Rye and my recent run-in with Bigfoot made me reconsider. Anything else by them I should be looking out for?

I'm fine with going to a more relaxed place solo but totally pussed out on KBS for fear of feeling like a loner on what I'm sure was a very social evening. I justified it by "choking down" some Pure Hoppiness at home and confirming what I thought I remembered about the one other time I had it...I really don't like it. I'm okay with many one-hop beers, or beers that tend to let one hop dominate the others, but it's such a cascade blast (which comes through frighteningly well) that it tastes like hop extract tea more than beer. I last had PH about a year ago, and my notes reference tasting artificial flavors and a harsh mint-like mouthfeel. At least my palate's remained consistent.

And those two I'd drink above a lot of other stuff. I just bought a 6 pack of Torpedo from March 30th, it looks like they've changed their labels quite a bit. Two labels with UPC on back now and date is printed on the neck instead of above the barcode, threw me off when I was checking for a date.

I had a Pale at a local bar that tasted pretty odd a few years ago, their Brown which I wasn't a huge fan of, and (funny you should mention that) a Summerfest that a buddy had in his fridge for some time. Knowing what I do now about that bar, they probably hadn't cleaned their taps in quite some time. Or ever, really, as it's a bit of a shithole. As for the brown, no idea. Might have to see if that redeems itself on another tasting, as my palate has changed a lot. I know I absolutely hated Expedition Stout the first time I had it, and now I'm a huge fan.

I would really like Hamiltons if they would a) remove the shuffleboard and pool tables and b) knock out the cafe next door. The problem is that the bar is always super crowded at night time to the point that there's barely anywhere to stand. It's even more annoying since I think the kitchen service at Hamilton's is a lot better than the Toronado, but you never actually get anything since you never have a table or spot at the bar.
