I think the point is Z3n is a space cowboy on the edge of a frontier unknown to man, he's out there pushing the limits, trail braking into the abyss. I'm sorry, but I'd say don't, unless you know exactly what you're buying.

RDs have a special place in my heart, and I've been riding them for almost 3 decades.

I currently sport a few LC 350s and 500 YPVS.

Early 70s are the worst possibly RDs. I still love them though.

Worst case scenario he's out 400 dollars and can resell it for the same price (or maybe even more!). In a better case he has a sweet little '70s 2-stroke. What's your objection?

I am into wrenching and I'm nuts about old smokers, but I don't think it's in the cards. I already have to get a truck and a bike to pass PA inspection, plus I am saving up for a supersport. Hell of a deal, but unfortunately I have more sense than money.

Haha yeah, this. To be fair to myself I still do this and fully well intend to until I die, but if I control my impulse buys then I can save more money for the stuff I'm serious about. I know, I'm a real rebel.

If you need and can handle a bike like that, do it.

It's not an easy-to-wrench bike though and finding parts might be challenging.

If I lived where you do, you wouldn't have received this advise, because I would be out buying a bike.

I already have my VFR750 so I definitely have no need for a VF1000R. And from my bike, I can only surmise that the VF1000R would be an even bigger pain in the rear end to work on.

But $850!!!

edit:
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/mcy/2983830497.html

I so badly want this just for the colour. I'm tempted to suggest $1300 but I shouldn't be spending any more than $1000 if I want to flip it...

I just bought a 1975 CB125 for $200.
"All it needs is this washer removed from the engine [guy dropped a washer in the head] and to have the engine remounted."
The guy was about 3 hours from me, also had about 8 other similar vintage bikes that he had already sold the day prior .
:argh: why couldn't I be closer??!!

It's got new tires, brakes are good, and it needs a new chain.
If I can, in fact, get this bike on the road for less than $200 in parts, I am going to be incredibly stoked.

Pictures to follow soon.

Yeah, I admittedly don't know a whole lot about this type of bike, other than the 82s were thumpers, and then in 84 they put V-twins in them.

Can someone provide input as to whether or not these would be a good first bike? I know that its age seems to be a suspect point, but the condition looks like it might save it on that front.

Why not just say "Text me between x and x, or call after 5?", or let it go to voicemail and call them back? I mean, these are the sort of communication problems we have solutions for.

Dude just sounds hilariously douchey, reminds me of a guy I knew who wanted to sell a 10 year old trackbike Honda F4 that had a number of problems, that he wanted 8k for. But he absolutely wouldn't accept less because it had HRC rearsets and engine covers. :v:

There's nothing about it that would make it a bad starter bike except that it's in really good shape for its age and seems to be relatively uncommon. You'd probably be pretty bummed if when you drop/dump it.

Ascots were pretty sweet bikes. Handled well (there was even a Spec Ascot series at Blackhawk Farms I believe in the 80's), and looked good.

I had what seemed like a complete idiot texting me the other day at work over a guitar amp I was selling, asking me stuff like "wats the lowest u go?" and "???" when I didn't respond right away. I told him I was busy and couldn't show it on the weekend cause I just wanted him to go away. Well, he came over that day and bought it in a cool two minutes. So sometimes it works out even when guy on the other side seems like a caveman.
