Someone has been pulling out old footage of local amateur racing and shoving it up on YouTube. This just got posted. It's an old Audi Quattro coupe menacing some bystanders to shore up its Group B credentials before it continues its run. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jzDoVY-cT0 Here's another rally in '94: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXxNbuz-VjU The entire account is basically full of nostalgia since you get to see kinds of street cars that never show up to events anymore (because they're either rusted away to nothing, completely obsoleted or become prized collectors' items). I had to do a double take the first time I saw a turbo K-car doing something that isn't a dragstrip run. Seat Safety Switch fucked around with this message at 15:31 on May 3, 2012 |

I can't believe how much of the local stuff he's got on there that I've seen firsthand. Regarding that Audi video, I was at the RMR special stage in Bearspaw that year! I remember my dad taking my younger brother and I to the rally in his old Porsche 911, and I also remember just how wet and rainy it was that morning; I was miserable, at least until the first cars came by. Watching rallies is so much better when you're not eight years old; you can drink until you just don't give a poo poo that it's raining and cold. Also, watching his hill climb video at COP makes me sad once again that they put speed bumps all up and down that road.

Everyone has heard of the Pike's Peak hill climb where flashy Red Bull cars and wannabe rally WRX drivers go up a now largely paved track. When I grew up in Colorado I always went to the Colorado hill climb races that weren't so well known but are, in my opinion, as exciting. The tracks are mostly all dirt and instead of fancy team sponsored Subarus the cars were/are mostly domestic junk hammered together by people in their garages and maybe sponsored by the local auto parts store. My brother was on the team of a bright red Jeep CJ7 that always fought bitterly with a fancier Ford Explorer owned by a guy from Colorado Springs (which seemed like a big city to me, so we were the underdogs). With that being said, here are some examples. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EOb_7rJFc8 I actually recognize some of these cars still. The guy who runs the #18 Mustang is the aforementioned big city Ford Explorer guy. He used to take a 4 wheeler down to the bottom of the track after racing one so he could race the other. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Z5afwiQ1KE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LaCN7G1kBA There's nothing like bringing a cooler up into the hills and sitting in the sun of the high desert hearing cars coming from several hills over before they burst around the corner in front of you. edit: Added a video from the race I went to most. 7of7 fucked around with this message at 04:57 on May 5, 2012 |

kimbo305 posted:What about the relatively heavier pounding 2-3000lb cars would do to the presumably lightly built kart track? As far as racing pavement goes, its not the weight that tends to kill it (assuming it was done properly) it's heat and tire compound. Race car tires (let alone street tires) are much harder due to the vehicle weight. This combined with the lower g load that production cars produce is actually easier on pavement. Kart tracks (once again done correctly) are often paved closer to a runway standard than an average road due to the load that kart tires produce. Very very soft sticky rubber (try picking a kart on soft compounds after a race. It's stuck to the track and has to be rolled as you pick it up) tends to eat the pavement. If its hot and an asphalt track, it will literally peel it up. Cars being harder slide over the surface of the pavement, don't dig into it as hard (laterally) and are not running sticky enough tires to pick up the actual pavement. In fact many kart tracks think karts will be easier on their surface when the uneducated build a track and end up having to do multiple repaves to fix it. When you see a car track (I've moved to racing cars for a living from karts long ago) it's usually improper curing, or the actual ground underneath the track moving about.

I know you guys like engine sound racing porn so here's a crosspost from SAS. Big block dirt modified feature at Orange County Fair Speedway. The camera work isn't that great, but it's ok. Basically, this is my local track, I grew up out there. My first race there was when I was three months old. My dad used to build cars with a guy back in the coupe days, through to the Vega/Pinto style cars of the 70's. Where the tires are buried in turn one is where the guy my dad was with eventually lost his life, right in front of us. Anyways, this is from this year, and it gives a nice taste of what American local racing is like. OCFS is one of the largest dirt tracks in the US, at 5/8ths of a mile, and the cars in this video are basically unique to New York state. It's also the oldest operating dirt track in America, and probably the world. The first race was in 1919, and it was one of five tracks allowed by the US government to hold a race in 1945. If you've never been to a dirt track, this is about as close to being there you can get. All that's missing is the smell of fried dough, cigar smoke, and gear oil. Relatively lucky, if that was indeed the case.
