I'm still not sure what racist Brazilian stereotypes Blanka is fulfilling, unless I missed the one about them being big green people with ginger hair.

At least Zangief being a Russian bear-wrestler who loves the motherland jumps right in with the stereotypical view of Russians.

Changing the topic to something interesting instead of another hundred posts making GBS threads on Capcom for the hundredth time, I finally got around to picking up VOOT last night. And I am not convinced that game was designed to be played by human beings. I mean they really tried, the controls are simple, responsive, and the default layout is probably the best they could have made. The graphics are clear and bright, and the sound is good. But you have to be some sort of machine to both process everything that is going on and be mechanically precise enough to do the rapid, simultaneous button presses the game demands. I know that sounds awfully "Finger puzzles!", but it really felt like the dexterity required for playing it on the pad was far beyond anything any other game takes. I can easily see why people like the game, but mother of god it is impossible to play.

I typically master games the first day I play them and despise any sort of challenge. thanks for warning me about this one, I'll steer clear.

You don't need to play to stereotypes to be racist - but it's off when, at least in Street Fighter 2; everyone poses as a 'representation' of their country, embracing some stereotypes in the process, and the one from Brazil is a mutant savage. Well no poo poo people from Brazil aren't mutant savages, but putting a design like that in that role is... suspect.

But I have no intention of turning this into a full-blown minority perspectives thread v3; so if you don't see it that way that's fine; I'm just sayin'.

If you think Blanka is racist, you're nuts. He is an unfair stereotype of non-existant fictional electric green skinned Brazilians that do not exist in real life at all and no one ever though they did. I'm not sure if you can have racial stereotypes of races that don't even exist. In fact, I don't think Blanka is even a race, there's just one of him.

In fact, he's one of the few SF2 characters who isn't a stereotype.

Hey, I'm a green-skinned electric Brazilian.

I don't know, I HATE Blanka, but it's for in-game reasons and I can't say I find it racist. On the other hand, it was designed on the misconception that Brazil is all jungles and wild animals, plus that was done in an incredibly lazy way, so eh...Blanka's stupid.

Sean ain't much better, because he's an American transposed to Brazil. Basketball? Get out of here, son. He's cool tho.

I guess what I mean is Eddy Gordo, stupid last name aside, it's the coolest Brazilian in fighting games. And it fits the reality, that all of us are goddamn mashers. I hated when they took him out of Tekken and put in Christie, mostly because that also meant TIGER JACKSON was out.

Speaking about Brazil, I'm pretty sure only three dudes from here or so will be going to EVO. We really, really need to work on tournaments that give plane tickets/boarding as prizes because everyone is goddamn broke or working like dogs come June. TOM CANNON give us some money please

Or Quanta or Full Cloth. I agree though in general there are fewer strong melee options in EXVS than there were in Next. I played Deathscythe in Next but couldn't get used to him in EXVS so I've mostly switched between Destiny, IJ, and X-1. That said, God Gundam in EXVS is about as fun as Shining was in Next IMO.

I dunno. The game's called Street Fighter 2: The World Warriors and everyone is supposed to represent their own country. For better or worse there are a lot of stereotypes. I don't think it's a big deal if the character is not very stereotypical.

Ryu, Ken, Blanka, Claw, Sagat, Cammy, M. Bison, and to an extent Fei Long aren't stereotypical. Fei Long is pretty much Bruce Lee. None of these characters' negative traits are really offensive. I mean, you can associate green jungle people with Brazil as much as you can associate vanity with Spain.

Zangief, Dhalsim, Guile, E. Honda, Boxer, T Hawk, and D Jay are all very stereotypical. That's kind of offensive right there. But then there are the generally terrible traits associated with some of these guys. I don't know about T Hawk and D Jay but I do know that Guile and Sim are two of the good guys. Gief and Boxer being bad guys is interesting (though Gief is mega lovable now that he's not a commie). Boxer is much more offensive because he's not really developed at all as a character (as opposed to a stereotype). I am unsure if Dudley fixes this.

I'm a little torn on Chun Li. Chun's got a very Chinese hairdo, but I don't know if her dress is Chinese. Otherwise she was some pretty unique traits - thunder thighs and strongest woman. Both of those traits can be seen as positives (if you want to question thunder thighs as a positive, ask Hyung Tae Kim).

I thought this post would point out that everyone in this game is a stereotype. Ironically, this did not turn out to be the case. Less than half the cast is a stereotype!
