Ugh, definitely getting the "resubbies" again. Why must such a great character system be owned by such a useless company?

I haven't checked this in about a year, and man... What a thrill just reading all of the posts about the game. It's like... the best woman I've ever known left me and got into porn. And my love for her was such that now I can't go on another second without being with her again in ANY FORM. So when I'm at my weakest I break down and decide that seeing her with another man is better than not seeing her at all. But then it turns out she's in awful, horribly shot porn. Exclusively terrible camera angles and almost exclusively weird stuff. She sometimes says things like "gently caress that guy deftest I used to date" and the male actor doesn't even know what she's talking about and none of it makes any sense but I STILL have to sit and convince myself that I won't subscribe. Son of a gun, man. What a game. forgive that analogy. that... might have been a little crass. use this one instead: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVUlzNXxljg

I'm getting a flare-up of my every-3-years itch to play AO (not that I have ever played it very well or very long). If I were to do so now, when there seems to be no Goon social support, is there another group I should hook up with? I'll try to resist the temptation, but...I am but a man.

I would kill to have a regular group for this, at this point making some froob accounts is essentially a cheap way to run an at-home video RPG session.

Anarchy Online was my first MMORPG. I preordered it and hopped on day-of-release, only to be unable to create a character for two days because the login was being pounded. Hmmm, gee, maybe we should muscle up the login servers the first few weeks? Nah, It'll be fine. The bugs were every bit as bad as you've heard. The server was crashy. The client was crashy. The graphics were glitchy, and it chugged if more than a dozen actors were onscreen. Items would stop working at random, and often become un-removable as well. Orgs had no functionality whatsoever... including the 'leave org' command. In true Tradeskills in particular were hosed six ways to Sunday. First, the requisite recipe was missing from the stores about half the time. Then, once you bought the recipe, the kit, and tracked down half a dozen reet anuses, it often failed to work. Finally, if it did work, you wound up with an item that you could have bought in the stores anyway. I struggled with it for six months before giving up. The most fun I had was looking through the forums and finding this. (mildly NSFW) Last week I had a case of nostalgia, so I downloaded AO and made a froob. The graphics had not been changed in the slightest; what was pretty good in 2001 is downright embarrassing now. Even my usual game, City of Heroes, has graphics a trillion times better than this despite coming out only three years later. I wrestled with the uncooperative camera and lovely UI for a few hours of shooting reets on the beach before uninstalling. Gynovore fucked around with this message at 07:21 on Jun 6, 2012 |

^^^^ Balance is too overrated. You balance poo poo too much and games become sterile. Yeah, this game was poo poo at launch, no doubt about it. But after they fixed the server issues and the major lag and bugs, its still to this day the most innovative MMO to ever be released. Just look what they introduced with AO.... Unparalleled character customization. The skill, class and item system coupled with implants is pretty much the most in depth customization any game had. Introduced instances, and not only that the instances were randomly generated. Something that was pretty drat revolutionary in 2001. First game to get rid of lovely travel times. The grid, whompas, and flying vheicles made traveling trivial. The chat system was revolutionary for its time. first game that you could link items in. Not only that you could do so much with the chat system, like make bots, item searches, Item shops... guild tools...etc... Still unrivaled to this day. We take simple things like item linking for granted today, but AO was the first. First 3 faction open world PvP in certain zones. First to have huge servers with which could support tens of thousands of players, instead of the lovely small servers all games have now which have 2-3 thousand max. First to have social dungeons with instanced copies of themselves based on population... There is probably more that Im not thinking of right now, but, yeah, it was pretty drat revolutionary for its time, back in 2001 and still one of my favorite mmo experiences. Yeah, maybe they tried to bite off a bit too much with this game. But with a smallish budget and probably 1/2 the people that work on mmos now days, they pulled off something that was unique and truly groundbreaking for its time. One of the best experiences was Heckler-grinding with some pubbies when one of them got knocked off the edge of Shadowlands. He landed in unfamiliar territory and because the way the game worked, he would've lost all his experience if he died. So, I went on a rescue mission into an area 10-20 levels higher than both of us and brought him back alive. It was such a self-made heroic experience that's missing from most MMOs.

Sometimes makes me wonder how AO was before AI and SL, given the customization system. SL added symbiants that knocked the old implants out of the water, save some specific bits like r-hand and maybe feet depending on the class (and Xan symbiants removed lot of that!), and AI made almost all of the existing armor pointless with the Combined armor. It still is there by making lowbie PvP-twinks, but high level, AO is really locked down now. Doctors used to run around with shotguns, pistols, massive bolt chargers, axes, fists, but now it's all about the Dreadloch guns. When going for "best build", anyways. There certainly were FotM weapons before, but it really wasn't so clear cut, with MA Doc you could argue for better synergy with symbiants/implants, MBC had best damage at one point et al. The option always was there, and suppose it still is, but being locked to Support symbiants really cuts down on the options. Lost Eden research lines limits things as well, or atleast the viable choices. Having 2 L220 Doctors (started off as neut, wanted to roll about omni later on for PvP reasons), the Dreadloch weapons kinda ruined it for me. I was really enjoying my MA doc, but then Collector and Aune dropped in, encounters in which staying still at range healbotting with occasional fling/burst was massively more beneficial than going into melee range really made me not want to play it anymore. (respeccing to pistols certainly would've been an option but eh.) Still waiting on that engine upgrade to resub, tho. AO still is the best MMO there is to me, thanks to the incredible depth. And probably due to it being the "first" MMO I religiously played for so long. Cstar fucked around with this message at 11:59 on Jun 9, 2012 |

Before AI/SL, nearly every Omni character went for Omni-pol Elite or Nano armor with a Primus coat. Their AC weaknesses were some of the least used damage types in the game. There was some agi/sen armor that a lot of fixers and agents went for too. Every castery/noncombat kind of class went for ithaca shotties with an extreme low light targetting scope. It was extremely fast, and you could stack huge amounts of crit with 15% ellts + MA's self-crit buff which wasn't self-only then. Traders, crats, engineers, MPs were all very rare since the pet system was awful and traders just had absolutely nothing to offer a group. Enforcers all went for 2h blunt with beams, though 2h edged became popular with the mantis queen blade. I guess the point is that there were always "best" builds and weapons. The most diverse point was probably when Shadowlands was mature, right before AI. phreaky fucked around with this message at 22:44 on Jun 17, 2012 |

Game director after game director figures out their career is being buried alive and claw their way out of that coffin before it's too late. And Kintaii is leaving too? Well, I dunno if that's a massively bad thing seeing as he's the content designer. Last time AO got actual new content I liked and was even doable solo was... eh... not in the recent years.
