Just two more weeks until the new European Championship starts. As much as I love MotoGP, ETCC or any other fast motorsport, there's just something about 15 tonne 8x8x8 trucks from the soviet era crawling about in a rock quarry.

Also I like seeing how a 30 year old Tatra 813 with it's ancient 18 litre, N/A, aircooled V12 Diesel can still take on a brand new MB Actross or Ginaf CF and come out on top, despite the huge technology gap. It feels so much more sports-like when money is considerably less important than skill.

The first time he does that on the video is loving insane, because he out-brakes like three cars and passes them on the outside. There's skill, and then there's that. That was more "my testicles are larger than yours" than anything.

He outbrakes them, then gets the holeshot out of the corner -- very impressive driving on both sides of that hairpin. Awesome video.

Are these completely different cars than the ones that run on oval circuits?

Seizure Meat
Jul 23, 2008

by Smythe
More or less, yes. To get a car to turn left all day, the suspension and chassis is set up in a way that the cars want to go left even on the straights, but for a road course they balance the setups. Generally teams will have many different cars at the shop for each year, but they'll only build two or three road course cars a year. Outide of the setup, the engines and bodywork are what you'd find on an oval.

This one is a bit older, but a great camera angle.

Ricky Rudd with some amazing footwork at Sonoma. NASCAR still utilizes a clutch and a 4 speed, so the experience today is the same. A NASCAR driver knows how to heel toe?!

Normal people heel toe by rolling the foot, so the left half of the foot is on the brake, right half of the foot is on throttle.

For cars like his where the throttle is buried in the footwell then he basically has no other choice. How would you expect him to get his heel on the gas?

Right I pivot on the heel of my foot instead of like he does on the ball. I guess because I feel like I get a much better feel of the braking pressure that way. He could put the pedal wherever he wants. Obviously in my car theyre more even.

If you look at the steering shaft, brake, clutch and gas pedal arrangements are dictated by that. There's some room for customization, but it would still necessitate an unnatural split between gas and brake.
