I just discovered that turning my dash illumination all the way past the last click turns on all the interior lighting, even if you're driving. Cool. And I got a 1/18 model TJ for £10 in a model shop's sale, excellent!

Credit's a funny thing, you get guys who want a new tricked out jeep, but don't have the cash on hand or the space to do it themselves but they'll go into the hole a ton of money at a huge markup and interest rate to get one done up from the dealer. There's a few tricked out AEV equipped JK's at work, completely kitted out with front and rear lockers, 35's and 37's, beadlock wheels, the works, but trying to get them to take those rigs off road is like pulling teeth...

Anyone have some recommendations for Jeep floor mats? I have a 96 Cherokee that I'm tidying up and I'm looking for something that won't loving slide around like the usual floor mats you get from like Walmart or something. There are lots of mats online but I'm a little hesitant to drop $100ish on pieces of rubber with no reviews.

I use some tan all rubber ones I got at Walmart that match my interior and with my bedliner upholstery replacment, they dont move around at all. They cost very little and they work great. I'm about 80% certain it's a pair of these or if not something similar: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Kraco-2pc-Rubber-Truck-Floor-Mats-Tan/15523426 When I go to the carwash I use the high pressure nozzle on them to effect. Honestly, I dont ever miss the carpet. Even on days when Its hot or I'm at the drive in and put my bare feet on the floor mat. The rubber doesn't collect things or hold water like a rug. I am looking to purchase my first truck and I am pretty adamant on having an MJ. I am not in any rush to go out and buy this first deal I come across but I do have a couple questions so that I don't pass up an obviously good deal. It was my intention to hold out and find a v6 equipped with the AX15 tranny but these are proving to be rarer than I expected. Is there any anecdotal advise in favor for or against this engine? What I really want to know is if I am staring a good deal in the face with this truck and I am just a dummy for passing it by for having the 2.2 4cyl instead of the i6? http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/cto/3008600703.html Tigertron fucked around with this message at 00:25 on May 14, 2012 |

It was my intention to hold out and find a v6 equipped with the AX15 tranny but these are proving to be rarer than I expected. Is there any anecdotal advise in favor for or against this engine? 1) You're ideally looking for the 4.0L AMC I6 ('87+), not the 2.8L GM V6 ('84-'86 XJ, '86 MJ). I mean, I suppose one could look for the V6, but it's everything that was wrong with '80s GM. 2) The AX15 replaced the Peugeot BA/10-5 somewhere in the mid-'89 era. So ultimately, if you're looking for an 4.0L/AX15, you're essentially narrowed to '90-'92, ideally '91/'92 since it lost the Renix controls and gained some Chrysler engine massaging. Buy that thing and keep it safe from the majority of $3k-truck-seekers. edit: why is it not closer to me I want more

Totaled blue Jeep dilemma solved Decided against paying $1500 for a boring white stripped SE hulk with an iffy title, no motor/radiator/gas tank and an interior that would probably give me herpes in favor of this 2001 Sport for $1000 more. It has about 210,000 miles on it but they were pretty much all long-haul commuter miles and it's super clean inside. Driver's side took a scrape on a median so the wheel flares, front quarter panel, and both doors could use replacement while the rear fender was dented and replaced with a hastily-painted salvage part. On the plus side all those parts happen to be pristine on our totaled blue 2001. Plans are to replace the damaged panels and doors then move the 100,000 mile drivetrain from the totaled jeep to the new body, then sell the high-mileage motor and rear axle along with any spare parts from the totaled XJ. After that I think it may need a couple inches lift I eats my spinach fucked around with this message at 20:21 on May 13, 2012 |

Awesome looking XJ--glad you got a replacement. It never ceases to amaze me the value of the XJ. $2500 for a barely 10 year old (slightly banged up) SUV is a drat good deal. I kind of wonder if XJs will be like old muscle cars where they go through a period of super, super low prices (remember the 90s for muscle cars?) and then jump in value when people remember how fun they were. I don't think we'll ever see one sell for $50k+, but I can't believe they'll keep selling for $2000 forever. mod sassinator fucked around with this message at 20:32 on May 13, 2012 |

How bad is the problem with 00 - 01 XJ's and the 0331 head crack? I am looking at a 2001 with 127k on it tomorrow, I know I need to be looking at the coolant, oil, etc to check for problems but what I am more worried about is the thing making GBS threads on me in 5k miles or something. Is this a problem I can address cheaply if I see it coming via milky oil/coolant? It really seems like there are way more 00 - 01's on the market than 97-99's so I would like to start considering them. Before now I was writing off anything newer than a 99. Basically, if I see this poo poo coming, how expensive is it to fix before catastrophic failure happens, and is it guaranteed to happen even if everything looks good at 127k? rally fucked around with this message at 00:56 on May 15, 2012 |

My 2001 went before I got to 127K, some go sooner and some will last longer. Chances are very good it will happen, though. If you catch it early enough it is just a matter of getting a replacement engine head and flushing the milk-soup out. If you let it go long enough and keep driving the coolant will destroy everything that needs lubrication in your engine and it will start knocking and probably shoot a rod through the side of your engine block. This is what my outcome was because I thought the knocking was just an exhaust leak. If you are really concerned about it, just have the head replaced before it gets a chance to happen. Since you will eventually have to do it any way. owls or something fucked around with this message at 02:50 on May 15, 2012 |

Ornery owl already covered the actual problem but when you check it out bring a flashlight. There's always a chance the engine or cylinder head may have already been replaced, we snagged a 2001 that had a new motor installed sometime in 2003 or 2004 since the original engine killed itself at 60,000 miles via the 0331 crack. Later 4.0L coil pack engines (2003-2006) had an improved head design that fixed the cracking issue, you can tell them from the 00-01 design by a "TUPY" casting mark on the head under the valve cover. Just pull the oil filler cap and look straight down, if it's there you should see it between the rocker arms.

Fitted the WJ with an adaptor to run my iPhone from the CD changer port, works really nicely - steering wheel controls all do their job etc. The changer was being temperamental anyway, but even if it wasn't, I'd probably still have swapped it out. Besides, now I've gained an extra storage cubby in the boot. It's a PXDP one. Seems like there's plenty of people knocking out the same thing with their own label on it, in my case iSimple. Little hideaway box about 4" square, fits perfectly in the cavity to one side of the headunit under the dash.

Yesterday I went to a parts lot to grab myself a new seat for my XJ, and as soon as I pulled up to the lot, my engine starts making a terrible clanging sound. Not good, I'm fifty miles from home out here. I popped my hood and found that my idler pulley decided to poo poo itself. The parts lot didn't have any 4.0s to harvest from, so they had car quest bring me a new pulley and belt, I didn't want to take a chance with the old one. So after replacing those, I didn't have money for the seat. New Part Day doesn't always end up the way you plan, I guess.
