This is very surprising. I bought a Logitech M570 wireless trackball a couple months back, which uses only one AA, and I've yet to replace it despite using it for at least a couple hours every day.

Most wireless mice are fine. I've used a logitech mouse before that lasted 3-4 months before needing new batteries. The issue is with more advanced mice - I literally just want 2 extra buttons, but pretty much every wireless mouse (on the market) that goes beyond the typical RightMiddleLeft-plus-2-side-buttons scheme has terrible battery life.

Actually after a bit of research it seems even the Performance MX mouse isn't that great in the efficiency department with many users reporting just a few days to 1 week use.

I think I might just have to give up on the buttons and get a Logitech M705 with supposedly 3 year battery life. Even if it only lasts 20% of that it's already good enough.

Nice, although I could have swore it has been as low as $35 at Newegg though (don't know if anyone can confirm).

I'm wondering if Logitech will be coming out with a new g-series mouse anytime soon, seems like it's been enough time since the g300 came out roughly a year ago.

I'm looking for a second mouse to use at home (gaming and Web browsing, mainly).

I use a Logitech performance MX at work, and it's pretty much perfect size and weight-wise, but I never really use the flywheel, or any of the extra buttons apart from the forward / back ones.

Are there any recommendations for a cheaper mouse similar to the mx but without those features, or should I just spend the money and be done with it?

I like the numpad, but the left mouse button has stopped 'springing' back into position all the time, and the click feel is a lot less sharp than it should be. It also releases unexpectedly. It'll also sometimes register double clicks. Basically, the switch has turned into an unreliable, chattery POS.

I've only had the mouse for about a year and haven't really abused it, just used it normally for gaming. Is this just another case of 'razer sells cheap crappy products all tarted up'?

If what you want is a buttload of buttons for MMO reasons, Cyborg now makes a 13-button version of the RAT7 which has combination button presses allowing some 78 programmable functions. Link

I'll praise RAT from the rooftops all day cause I love mine and it feels solid as hell.

I've been using a Razer Diamondback for the past six years or so, and the left click has become a bit inconsistent lately.

What I'm looking for: high resolution (I barely move my hand at all to use this mouse, which I love), wired, on the bigger side, and not overly weird and asymmetrical. Don't have too much need for lots of buttons, but I like the back/forward on the thumb that my current mouse has.

Should I still be looking at Razer, or are their products overpriced? Currently looking at the Lachesis.

I found the lachesis to be too low and flat for my tastes. Also, the buttons on the pinky side are way too hard to hit without getting hand cramps, they seem to be more useful as thumb buttons if you use the mouse left handed. That said, I used it for over a year and it's a solid and reliable mouse that's still on my second PC, but I found moving to a G500 was better for my every day use (it's asymmetric however).

You are going to have trouble finding something close to the Diamondback (believe me, I looked). I ended up getting the Razer Abyssus and found I really enjoy it. Down sides vs the Diamondback are it's not as long and there are no thumb buttons. Plus sides are adjustable DPI, lightweight, and very similar feel.

I personally replaced my Loitech MX300 with a G1 and it's great stuff. If you need a higher resolution you might need to grab a G100. However, these are both made for the asian market and are thus somewhat small and also nearly impossible to find stateside.

I shipped over a G1 from Korea to Hawaii because I knew my MX300 was going to fail sooner or later, when the left mouse button started to have similar left click issues I just made the swap. Not so much in the way of extra buttons though.

The G700 and M705 both feel very similar and are wireless. Alternatively you can get the Logitech Couch Mouse and play directly on the fabric of your couch. I have one and it works pretty well.

I picked up a G400 on the cheap a bit back and am just now messing around with rebinding the extra buttons. Is there no way to have the extra buttons just "mouse4-8" for game binding purposes? I don't need hotkeys for back and forward but those seem to be the only way to use mouse4+5 in games and there seems to be no actual equivalent for 6-8.

It might just be the logitech gaming software being lovely, though. Any alternatives?

Microsoft only supports 5 buttons for mice in Windows. Back and Forward in LGS just send Mouse4 and Mouse5, because that is the default functionality of Mouse4 and Mouse5 in browsers.

There is no way to do what you're trying to do unless you're playing WoW and own either a WoW mouse or create a profile in LGS for WoW and unassign buttons above 5. That is not a documented feature of LGS, but unless they took it out it should still work.

I bought a new MX 518 in November 2010 for $25. My old one is at the office and gets daily use, but the new one only gets use at home if I'm playing SC2. With D3 coming out, I've got the itch again to buy a new mouse, and of course I'd get the G400. The question is, is there really any reason to spend the $35? Isn't the G400 basically the MS 518 with a 4th, higher DPI option?

And to show you just how old school I am, I'm still rocking a Ratpadz GS from 2002. :chord:

I have a Ratpadz before there were any options or names, before it was called the "XT", before the GS was invented as a thinner, cheaper alternative. The logo has almost entirely gone, and it is curved as hell because I use it on an armchair.

Absolutely fantastic mousing surfaces, I'd recommend them always. Only problem is, they don't wear out, ever, so I don't see how they can make money from old customers.

I actually have my original Ratpadz as well, but it became warped (center is raised) and the feet don't keep it still. Ratpadz GS is amazing, though my roommate's Steelseries surface is pretty legit.

G400 is identical in shape to MX518, but the sensor is totally new and the microcontroller is full speed rather than low speed USB. Additionally, newer versions of the G400 have had angle snapping removed. If you like your MX518, however, there is really no reason to update to the G400. The differences are likely not going to be significant to you.

Rekkit posted:

The G400 and G500 have subtly different shapes. The G500 has a little bit wider lip on both sides to hold your thumb and ring fingers on, and it has more buttons (2 index finger and 1 thumb). The G500 is also a few grams heavier even with the weights removed than the G400.

There is nothing identical to the G3 on the market at the moment from Logitech. There are a few other brands (Zowie, Steel, NZXT) that make products that are similar, and Logitech themselves have the G100 in Asia (which is an optical sensor rather than laser and has no thumb buttons) but there's nothing that's going to be exact.

None of the high-performance gaming sensors on the market are particularly compatible with battery life at this point in time. They all draw too much power to last more than a day. You're making a tradeoff between performance (high speed tracking, most specifically) and battery life, and with gaming sensors high-speed tracking is really the critical component. It will be a while before there's a good wireless gaming sensor, and it won't have nearly the speed specs that the G700's sensor does simply because there's no way to pull in that much information without a ton of power.

I had a look at the Lachesis, and it seems it's the closest thing I'll be able to get. Are there any other options on the cheaper side? On one hand I'm not rolling in cash, but on the other, I've had this mouse for the better part of a decade so I can certainly pay for better build quality.
