There is a KDX80 on seattle craiglist right now for $375 that's rough but boy do I want it

Gay Nudist Dad posted:It would be a toy, and this is only a pipe dream Something like that would have to be a 3rd or 4th bike for me, honestly It's fun to toy around on but you'll want a fuller sized bike if you want to really mess around on the streets. The 80 will be under sprung for your weight unless you're pretty light and doesn't have that much power except in a narrow rev range. If they weren't so tiny (even tinier if you put 17 inch wheels on it) they'd probably suit what you want more. It sounds like you want a true supermoto with a peaky 2T engine. Go look for a KX500 / CR500 and convert it to street .

I'll preface this with full acknowledgement that I am very ignorant when it comes to motorcycles, although I am and have been endorsed since since 2001 when I learned to ride on my dad's Honda VTX 1800. I had a pretty sweet deal going, he did all the maintenance and when he got bored of driving for the year I'd borrow it for a month and ride the hell out of it. I had always intended to buy it from him when he decided to sell it as it's the only motorcycle I've ever ridden, but due to some confusion and well-meaning concern on his part he sold it to a buddy to trade in before I was able to put a bid in. During the years I had continually toyed with the idea of getting my own bike but never did, and now I've been getting the itch to ride again and I have no idea where to start. To be honest, as much as I loved the get up and go of the VTX, it really was larger and heavier than I wanted so getting another one is out and browsing around CA I see a few other styles that I really like the look of, like the naked bikes (I don't like the look of what I believe are called fairings) and the VRSCDX, although I am under the impression that if reliability is a concern I should stay away from Harleys. For reference, I am 6'1, 220 lbs and would be using this primarily as a daily commuter but would like to take longer trips on highways or interstates. All that said, in my area it seems picking are slim and for someone who has no mechanical background at all or tools, at this price, how does this bike sound? http://tippecanoe.craigslist.org/mcy/3025825484.html Are the repairs suggested reasonable? I am prepared to learn how to work on any bike I get although my job and young son would leave me little extra time for fixing when I'd rather be riding so low maintenance would be a huge plus. Reading CA it seems like I should be looking at shaft driven over chain? I apologize in advance if I have mutilated and misused terminology, I am obviously ignorant but really am trying to learn!

What is your price range like? I'm always a bit leery of bikes heavily modded by POs because they tend to have no idea what they're doing. If you've got a bit more cash on hand, I'd go with something cheap and reliable, like a GS500, or similar, maybe an older SV650.

Recluse posted:First bike stuff If I was getting a first bike of my own (or a bike I expected to be reasonably trouble-free) one that the PO is saying "woops I broke some bolts in the engine block here u go" would not be my first choice. Go to your local bike shops, look around, sit on a whole bunch of different ones, get a better feel for what you want. Body position on the bike is far, far more important than looks; you want to see if you think you prefer a more forward-biased (sportbike) neutral (naked, others) or rearward (cruiser, like your VTX) position. Don't assume because a bike has a 'small' displacement engine that it's too small for you. Once you know the riding position you can worry about looks from there. Don't sweat stuff like chain/belt/shaft, it's really minor for what you're looking for. If you liked the VTX but it felt too big, look at a smaller Honda Shadow like a 750 or 1100 (not a smaller-engined VTX, they all have the same enormous frame). Smaller-engined Honda cruisers aren't going to be rocketships, but they hold value well (if you buy used), are reliable, you can change the foot controls / bars around for the posture you want, and should you choose to, it's easy and comfortable to bring your young son aboard with you.

This is just appalling: Caferacer.jpg So you want $3500 for a fairly common 34 year old bike that looks like poo poo and needs work? Judging by how the brake pedal is mounted, I wouldn't trust a single thing you've done to that bike. Also, your right fork is mounted backwards. Edit: what the gently caress is a "New Air System?"
