I've had the Creme Brulee recently and it was almost sickeningly sweet. Can't handle more than a few ounces. But drat was it a delicious smelling beer. Somebody described it recently as tasting like a Yankee Candle smells which is a pretty apt description.

Just got back from an Allagash Tap Takeover... well, actually a sneak-peak of one since it doesn't start till later today. Tried the bourbon barrel aged Black - not bad, a little more bite than normal with some nice vanilla notes. Also had Old HRT (which I think should stand for "Honestly, Really Tasty."), Saison Mihm (was like juniper bubblegum), and Big Little Beer. BLB was different from the last time I had it - this one was a belgian IPA hop-bomb. Really unusual for Allagash, but very good. The only one of those I've heard anything good about (mostly because I've had it) is the barrel aged gonzo though I don't think it's worth the significant price premium over the regular version.

Rogue Voodoo Donut: The bottle just hit 47F, so I poured some into a snifter. Body is hazy and the color of browned butter. The nose is slightly smoky and sweet with definite, easily-identified bacon aromas. It smells exactly like maple bacon like you'd find pre-packaged at the store or like maple breakfast sausages. It's sweet and watery on the first sip. This gives way to a light-bodied, slightly sour (like burned toast) and smoky profile with crispy pork fat notes at the edges. Aftertaste is lingering weak smoke, unidentified mineral notes. Slightly dry. Overall, interesting but not complex - just has flavors you don't normally find (together, at least) in a beer. Nowhere near a drain-pour, but I won't be buying it again. Verdict: I've been to Voodoo Doughnut (the one off west burnside). Usually drunk or hungover and not really ever when the sun was up. I've had the doughnut. The beer doesn't evoke memories of that doughnut. Why can't this come in 7oz bottles, ala Rogue's XS series? Now I have a bomber of it. gently caress. edit: On the second glass, my palate is completely fatigued and all I can taste is a bitterly weak ale with a crappy, sour finish. Boo. Hey guys. I feel like I've transgressed the thread a little. I'm the only nationally syndicated beer critic in Canada, and I was in San Diego at the CBC. I may have mentioned to the Cigar City dudes that at least one of them was a goon. I also said that whoever that was was fair, balanced and rational in talking about beer and a really good employee choice. So, if you were wondering, Cigar City employee, that was me.

Went to that Parabola tapping last night, It was so good. It's incredible how well they hide the alcohol, even with the bourbon flavor I'd have been happy to believe it was maybe 9%, not 13%. Even my wife who isn't into huge stouts really enjoyed it. I'm glad it was served in a snifter, though. It probably took me 40 minutes to sip through it, just because it's fairly intense. Drinking an entire bomber alone would be...inadvisable. Had an Orval after that just because I hadn't tried it in ages. Bottle was ~9 months old and it definitely had a pronounced Brett character. Still owns. Last beer of the night was a special coffee-conditioned keg of Oskar Blues Old Chub. Didn't really work for me, the coffee was too harsh. It wasn't awful, but they went too strong on the coffee or maybe used the wrong roast. It's not terrible in concept, I just didn't like it. Also a full pint of Old Chub is already a tough mountain to climb sometimes without adding even more complexity.

Three beers in, so far. The Voodoo Doughnut was tough to finish. The Abita 25th was actually really smooth and mild for a strong ale. Touch of vanilla, but nothing memorable. On to the Widmer Raspberry RIS! This is like a dark chocolate raspberry truffle in a glass - without all the sugar, though. You don't get much raspberry on the nose, but it's there, at the edges, in the flavor - rounds out the chocolate notes and the toasted malts really well. Bit of hops in the finish. Really nice. Too expensive, though. I think this one was $14. edit: When it warms up in the glass, you get more fruit in the nose and a much more pronounced berry flavor. I think this is my favorite among the Widmer alchemy beers, so far. It's also 9+% abv, so I might not achieve my goal of four beers tonight. Gave my liver a break for a bit - on to NB's Tart Lychee. This one is kind of cool. Straight up sour aroma, bit of funk. Some tart notes. Flavor has a couple layers to it - right away you get light funk and sour fruits, some tartness. The lychee that was missing in the nose comes through in the middle - but lacks any of the flavors that I've had with fresh lychee before. It's kind of dull. Lends some sweetness to the aftertaste. The cinnamon comes through towards the end. A little bit of warmth and spice in the finish. Overall, a great entry into the LoF series, for sure.

Got a sixer of Hopdevil and a Schneider Weisse. I don't think I'd ever had Schneider's, but the store was out of Weihenstephaner. They're very similar, though the Schneider is a bit more subdued. Banana, clove, not too much yeast, though.

Does this years SN Kellerweiss taste a little yeast stressed to anyone else? I bought a couple of 6 packs because I love hefeweizen and I remember enjoying SN's in the past, but this tastes like plastic and wet dog.

Check the date code, it's quite possible you got an old bottle. The code is directly above the UPC, the first digit is for the year (0 for 2010, 1 for 2011, 2 for 2012), and the next three digits are a Julian day code.

Trying out Sixpoint Resin after hearing a lot about it. It's not a favorite, but it's nice - big grapefruit and mango flavor with what I can only describe as an aggressive balance of malt sweetness and hop bitterness. My only complaint is that it doesn't deliver nearly as much in the aroma department as I'd like - for me, a good DIPA all but kicks your nostrils in the balls with hop aroma. I'll have to find some SN Hoptimum for my next DIPA kick, if it's all it's made out to be. Any Chicagoons doing stuff for CCBW? I'm not sure what I can make it to, between being broke and having a brutal week in the cellar ahead of me, but if there's anything that's reasonably priced and exceptional I'll see what I can do. It's too bad that other guys at Goose got all the slots for pouring events, but I should be able to pour at some other events in the near future.

It's 5PM in Prague - time to start day 2 of bomber hijinks! Flying Dog Barrel-Aged Gonzo! In the nose: Oak and smoke, coffee and toffee, vanilla and something-that-rhymes-with-vanilla. Some whiskey notes. Big, creamy and roasty in the mouth. Vanilla and chocolate all over the place. Tons of oakiness. Quite honestly, I would buy this over my usual Old Rasputin as my house dark beer of choice. Too bad this poo poo is getting harder to find. If you like Gonzo, you will love this BA version.

Opened a Fort Collin's Wheat Wine Ale last night. I'm not sure what I think about it. The elements were almost like a really thin quad. The flavors were there, but muted behind the wheat. It's amazingly easy drinking for 9.3%...not just easy, it was actually pretty refreshing. It was just weird having those intense flavors of a quad lurking, but never breaking through. It was enjoyable though, and I might pick up another one just to try it again.
