For me, one dealbreaker is the long, double coat that you see with Spitz and such. Another is extreme brachycephaly. Also I have no interest in most of the A/KC terrier breeds. American Cocker Spaniels creep me out a little, as do Affenpinschers

Now you :colbert:

HERE. HAVE ALL OF THE FUR. :v:

Koji has decided that one coat blow this season was not enough. :smithicide: I'm so glad I have a good vacuum and a dog that likes to be brushed...

Dogs I'd never own? Schnauzers (UUUGH!), King Charles Cavs, Poodles, Dalmations, Danes. Mastiffs, Bulldogges (American or English or Pibbles....), most terriers... v:shobon:v

If it's not a Spitz, I'm generally not interested. Corgis are kind of cool, but a bit of work, and I don't want to say no to labs since if I do get into hunting I might want one of those or a setter, but yeeeeeah.

Cannot handle the noise of Beagles/hounds, do not like the derf of Labs, do not like the look of Lhasa/Shih Tzus, Boxers, or any Spaniels.

Dog that I would deeply love to own: Great Dane, Pyrenees, St. Bernard, Mastiff... Something huge and/or enormously fluffy :3:

Dog that I would never own in a million billion years: Chihuahua, Pom, Chinese-Crested... basically anything I could accidentally step on :ohdear:

At the moment I unwillingly 'own' (sort of, stuff is going on with the grandmother who left her with us, we'll see) an allegedly 'purebred' Shih-Tzu and while I was initially skeptical she is just oh so well behaved :3: and she plays with Clinton and he adores her. I suppose she gets an exception.

American Bully. :smug: Anything really high-energy like a BC or Aussie would have me tearing my hair out in a week. I dislike the typical "pursedog"; Bichons, Yorkies, toy poodles, etc. I don't mind Poms as much, probably because my childhood dog was a Pom, but I'm just not a fan of toy breeds in general. I would never want a Chow - I think they can be great dogs, but they're too standoffish and unfriendly for my tastes. They just tend to be a bit more extreme than other primitive breeds, from my experience. I love Beagles, but the baying...no thanks.

I would never own the following:

- Scenthounds. They're fun, but I want a more handler-attentive dog.
- Dogs with massive, thick, blow-y coats like huskies/malamutes/etc. even though they're gorgeous.
- Small terriers. I love them, but they're not for me.
- Bracycephalic dogs.
- Shih-tzus/pekes/maltese/bichons/etc. I dunno why but I just do not care for these breeds.
- Boxers. Sorry, boxer lovers, I just think they're incredibly retarded and ugly. :saddowns:
- Any of the designer dogs, especially labra/goldendoodles. Also goes for teacups.
- AmBully (Azrael reminded me).

I'm pretty content with having three dogs. I don't think I'll always keep it at three, but I'll probably always have more than one because I love watching them interact together.

Also, A life less, please tell my husband chihuahuas don't count, because then I can get another dog! ;)

Breeds I am very interested in someday owning:
Doberman
German pincher
Welsh terrier

Breeds I'd someday maybe like to own:
Bull terrier? Maybe
Another mutt or two, I especially have a soft spot for short-haired terrier mutts thanks to my Ned.
Belgian Tervuren
Vallhund
A pibble
more Chihuahuas
a JRT
well-bred poodle. I can groom them myself, so that doesn't bother me.
A sheltie
Chinese Crested

I'd never own:
A newfoundland, or any other giant hairy slobbery breed.
a pug
a shih tzu
a Bichon

Any breed under 25lb is right out. If I can punt it, I don't want it. Any flavor of pit because holy poo poo are those dogs clingy as gently caress. Any retriever breed because all they ever want to do is chase the ball. Cannot deal with hounds because of all the god damned noise. Terriers are little monsters.

...

Actually, if it isn't a primitive breed, I don't want it. Stubborn primadonna who is prettier than I ever will be? Yes please.

I want an entire sled team of malamutes. Really that's all I want. I'm pretty much a one breed girl.

edit: I honestly don't get the bitching about them blowing their coat. It happens twice a year and comes in great big tuffs. It's super easy to deal with for, like, the three weeks it takes. I corner Sitka and brush her for like 30 minutes after our run and fill a trash bag of fur. After three weeks of that it's over for about 6 months. No big.

In a world where Irish Wolfhounds don't have a lifespan comparable to a house rabbit, I'd totally get one. Also a Brittany and a Border collie, because this would be a world where I also have infinite time and energy.

I don't think I'd get a dog with a tendency towards dog aggression or something that's genetically screwed-up like a Pug or English Bulldog.

My friend's horrible little BYB longhair Chi thing is actually a pretty game little dog. He has awful teeth and a misaligned jaw and huge bulging eyes, but he is very athletic and quite clever. He loves people and will sit quietly in your lap, or play fetch for hours, and he always tries to play with toys that are comically too big for him. He also had a really strong prey reaction to our other friend's pet rat.

I'm not a fan of small dogs, and I've met a lot of awful chihuahuas, but Jack is a surprisingly awesome little dude. It helps that most of his worst behaviors disappeared after neutering.

And lol, yeah, Pits can be clingy, but I tend to see that more in dogs who don't get enough attention and exercise to begin with. My Pit mix always wants to be near me, but he's not in my face unless he's bored/anxious/wants something from me. But I love dogs who love attention, so I wouldn't mind having a total velcro dog. :3: That's one of the reasons why I love Pibbles so much. Totally a people oriented/motivated breed.

stuck.
I don't think I'm cut out for big drivey breeds. I don't know though. I've only had one dog, a big durfy family lab, and my parents (who were socialists and hippies in the early seventies) had never had a suburban lab and apparently let their previous dogs (black labs) run wild unneutered all over Vancouver Island.

So, uh, if you're on Vancouver Island and keep running into stray durfy black labs, I am sorry.

So he was always anxious and hardly trained. He was from field trials stock, too, but we never did anything.

So I think the only dogs I can think of wanting right now are happy older mutts who can teach me how to be a proper and not terrible dog owner, but the idea of the time commitment is terrifying to me (despite the fact that I currently have four kittens taking up every spare hour I have).

When I'm finally ready I want something medium sized and vaguely active. I think. I like spaniels but I heard they are neurotic with interesting death-related genetic defects.

So, I'm not a dog person at all and probably never will be. I used to really dislike all dogs for some reason, ever since I was little - now I tolerate them and even like some of the dogs I know personally, but generally I can't ever see getting one myself. But, PI, you tell me - in an alternate universe, what would be the dog for me?

* Not terribly drooly
* Decently long life, because I get all :qq:
* Can breathe properly (no brachys)
* Small-medium sized
* Independent enough to left alone for long periods of time; I'm often at work for 12+ hours, although I could come home at lunch
* Lower energy because I can't do long runs or biking, plus the whole absurd work hours thing
* Not a chihuahua (I'm sorry, they just look like big, trembling rats to me...)
* Not very yappy or barky (no hounds)

...yeah, it's pretty obvious that the best dog for me is a cat.

Question: why the dislike for AmBulls? I've not seen/heard much about them other than what I know of my own dog (American Bulldog x lab mix) so I'm curious if there's something specifically weird about them (like how boxers have short lifespans, anything like that) :ohdear:

Of course, the dog I own now is a mix of two dogs I would probably not pursue a breeder about.

Maybe I'm weird, but I could totally fall asleep to the sound of hounds baying. I was raised around them and I remember how loud they can be if you're right up near them, but it's still not that bad to me. I prefer that to higher-pitched barking and growling that a non-hound would do.

Schnauzer's as close as I get to terriers, really. I dunno. I've just never really been into the majority of them. I'd entertain the idea of a cairn, but it'd have to be the right cairn.

A small side note: Since Balen has been a little young thing (with no white on his fuzzy face, even), if the water is running, I steal the kitchen hose up and spray him. His job is to get away without getting sprayed. It's like water tag. And he comes back for more.

Watching four dogs do this is amazing.
