Putting your voice up on display for complete strangers to dissect and analyze can be unnerving if you're insecure or lack self-confidence.

Even if you do have self confidence it's just loving weird and creepy.

I'm still at a loss as to how talking about someone's voice inherently constitutes being anything approaching weird or creepy.

Obviously there's a line that can be crossed: actually being a dick by carrying on about something when it's clear the person does not want it discussed, for instance. And obnoxious fanboy/girl, quasi-sexual bullshit probably isn't ever going to go over real well.

But when people get up in arms over totally neutral remarks, it's just as bizarre to me as the minority who take things way too far in the first place. Like...it's a Let's Play. You show a video game by playing it and talking about it. The vocal performance is a pretty large component of what you are doing here on this forum; of the entertainment you're sharing with us. Anyone interacting with what you've made and shared is going to be listening to you for a few hours. By its nature, people are going to hear your voice. If someone is terribly insecure about it, making Let's Play's with voiced commentary probably isn't really something they'd feel comfortable with in the first place, whether or not the subject actually does come up in their thread.

Lots of people have favorite singers, newscasters, podcasters, radio personalities, and whatever based solely on finding the quality of someone's voice enjoyable. And disliking others for the same reason. Same for this thing we're all here for. To pretend otherwise and make it a Thing We Don't Talk About seems kind of absurd.

I guess what Im trying to say is: voices are kind of a part of what everyone here does, and there's lots of ways to talk about liking someone's voice without being a jerk (or 'weird' or 'creepy').

The problem is, Goons have repeatedly proven that they cannot be trusted to talk about people's voices without making weird and creepy remarks. It starts off with a neutral remark, then somebody else chimes in, then you have people discussing it at length and insisting that it's weird or it's cool or it makes them want to scratch their ears out. There are far more cases of people acting weird over voices than people not acting weird over voices, which is why people are so on edge about it.

Thing is, for every comment of "you have a great voice that I enjoy listening to" there's one along the lines of "I love your voice and wish you were my friend so we could hang out together". I think people tend to get them confused and whenever they see a comment on someone's voice that isn't terrible they assume based on comments they've seen before that it carries a hidden creepiness and malice because it's the internet, you assume everything everyone says is screamed from a basement with their hand down their pants.

This entire conversation is getting kind of stupid in both the self/LPer pity and the pointless amounts of "BETTER/WORSE/THE SAME AS YOUTUBE" arguing. The former is too late to matter, the latter just doesn't matter at all.

As I said, if you see someone being creepy about it, report them. Otherwise, who cares? It's not against the rules to discuss voices, it is against the rules to be creepy about it. That's it.

If you feel that much about it, maybe you should consider actually reporting people being creepy about it in the future. There's a thought.

It is awful that that happened, yes. We do not need everyone giving their own no-content "WHOAH OH MY THAT IS CREEPY AS HECK" reply. I'm pretty sure almost everyone finds that hosed up. But it happens occasionally. My apologies that you had to deal with that, PoorWeather!

...

But since some people seem to have some confusion about how our community works or whatever, let me say something:

All communities, societies, whatever, have undesirables or other elements that take advantage of or otherwise contradict the desired purpose of the community as a whole. In real life, removing "undesirables" is often a bad thing since it's often just prejudices and ignorance of general living conditions. Denying someone a right to live in a community "IRL" since ~ whatever ~ when it's non-criminal is bad, even if they're probably otherwise awful. But in an internet community like our own, a place for personal recreation and enjoyment of people that the community as a whole likes, there is little need for tolerating our "undesirables", be they weirdos, creeps, obnoxious folks, idiots, racists, children, lovely trolls, or whatever.

But it's not like people spending ten dollars to join our forum somehow makes them good and not a member of the aforementioned group. It doesn't automatically make the community a quality one. It just helps keeps out children and makes punishment possible for those that continually violate our rules (and even that isn't concrete, see the thousands of dollars IWC has spent on registering accounts).

The way Something Awful "works" and hopefully to you becomes something "good" is by actively taking stances against shittiness and being non-lovely yourself. This includes reporting people who break the rules so we can let them know how awful they are being by probating/banning them, personally discouraging lovely posting in ways that don't derail threads completely, and being a good example yourself by contributing "excellently". Hopefully by being funny!

Everything else is just unfiltered internet, unfiltered humanity. You'll find good content and good contributions, bad content and bad contributions, and plenty of people acting like loving weirdos because their mom will never know. That happens. Some people like that. Some of the people that like that are people we don't like. They don't have to be here. We try to filter things here so it's more enjoyable and less lovely. But that filtering process takes time and effort.

Something Awful as a community isn't this perfect place where everything is hunky dory 100% flawless. It's a funny website's forum where we try to keep things fun, interesting, and content-filled by routinely and actively trying to make the forum better on a continual basis. We're pursuing the platonic ideal of a funny and interesting internet forum. It won't ever be perfect or flawless, but we can keep at it and hopefully it will continue to improve over time.

Hopefully you will be by and large able to have fun here on Something Awful and help it keep being fun by being a Good Poster and helping stop Bad Posters. The power is yours.

Platinum is the best way; it's the most organized, easiest, fastest way for both you and us to address problems, and it has admin supervision. The report function is limited to Platinum for the simple reason that having it "free" just resulted in an overflow of erroneous reports. It's a filter.

You can also email me or slowbeef, message either of us on AIM (check our profiles), or even contact me on IRC. You could also PM us but you need Platinum for that too. Just keep in mind that we aren't always around or able to deal with things we get sent to us this way.

So, I've been wanting to do an LP of Sin and Punishment, but sadly I don't own a capture card. Right now what I did was record the game off of the Project 64 emulator. The problem being that some bosses explode and completely blacken the screen.

I've been trying to find an English patch with really no avail either (Audio is always in English just text and stuff). The one patch I tried did absolutely nothing and I can't fix the problem that comes with emulating some 64 games.

So this video has no commentary, but instead I want to see if the visual quality is fine and if people think the black screen thing is too intrusive.

If there's nothing you can do to fix it then it's not a big deal, just explain it in the thread as a thing to watch out for. It doesn't blank the screen out for long and doesn't seem to be a problem for more than half of the bosses in that test video anyways.

Otherwise it looks fine to me, though I'm sure the black border around the top and bottom will bug someone enough to bring it up. Doesn't bother me, but I've seen plenty of people complain about that kind of thing in the past.

So what resolution did you record this in, cause you should easily be able to resize it to have the black borders on the top and bottom? And if you want to try you could bump it up to a 720 4:3 resolution. Also it seems like you've got the common place frame blending issue going on, so you should probably try to fix that in your encoding process (not really sure if you're using MeGui or going with Vegas/Premiere, but yea, Vegas and Premiere have presets that will put in frame blending). In the end though most N64 games will look like rear end, but it won't hurt too much to crop off those black borders and resize it a bit.

Was going to post about exactly this ^^^

Also, do you know what it is that's supposed to be happening when the screen goes black when bosses die?
fake edit: actually I looked it up myself: it's a large dome shaped explosion, but the more likely culprit is that there may also be a full screen blur effect (it's hard to tell from this youtube video). I'm not sure what, if anything, this might do in aiding someone guess how to fix the problem (if it is indeed fixable - I'm sure Zain's tried pretty much everything already, but you never know). Hell, maybe you can use a colour mask to make your own sweet blur effect instead.

I had a pretty horrible black-screen bug trying to run Ogre Battle 64 on P64 which I was eventually able to fix by rotating between 3 different video plugins as the situation dictated. Try tinkering around with different plugins and see if any of them work. Particularly try either Glide64 or the Rice plugin; those both worked for me where the default plugin failed.

e: If the plugins present their own unique problems (EG Rice occasionally runs like a stuttery piece of crap and Glide64 makes bitmaps look pretty blocky) try loving around with their unique settings before calling them a failure, too. Unfortunately I can't get more specific than "gently caress around" since the best exact plugin/settings combo seems to vary depending on your system.
