I asked about this in the "Recommend a tablet" thread and got some very helpful answers, but I figured I'd ask here as well since there would probably be a higher concentration of people with experience. I need an Android 4.x tablet for work. The most important thing is stock Android. The two recommendations were the Transformer and Xoom. Of the two, the Transformer seems to be the better option because of the keyboard, but it comes with Asus software. I've read that Asus has an unlocking tool available. Does this mean I can unlock it, wipe it, and just point it to some Google server to grab updates? I'm probably really misunderstanding this since I have zero experience with the Android ecosystem. The other option is waiting for the rumoured Nexus tablet, but it looks like that might not be until very late this year? edit: Should mention that the Xoom doesn't seem like a great option because apparently only the American version gets updates straight from Google. You get the updates from Asus server after they make it work on the transformer and what they said in the other thread was "There's a button you press that turns off all the stuff Asus have changed". Obviously this doesn't include changes they've made to make it work with the hardware but apart from that it should be stock as far as I know. If you get the wifi version you get updates as soon as the manufacturer makes them available but if you get a 3g one you have to wait until the provider approves it

If NVIDIA can somehow roll out that Tegra 3 for sub 150, that should plummet the price of some of the existing T3 10.1 inch tabs which is music to my ears.

Well here I am again. My TFP has broken AGAIN. This time the camera sensor is hosed up because now it just displays green static. I've got another RMA with Asus and they want me to send the tablet in. I complained tho high hell about the first time it broke, recieving it back after a month with cosmetic damage. And they still want me to send the goddamned thing in before they will even attempt to placate me... If I send this in for repairs again, I will have had this thing in my possession for less than half the time I've owned it and spent an additional $50-60 on shipping. I will never purchase another Asus product again, this is ridiculous.

Anecdotal sure, but I've had zero problems with the TF300 and it's one of the best devices I've ever used. No dust - some very minor lightbleed in the lower right corner - and otherwise it's exactly what I wanted in a tablet. The TF300 appears as though it went through a much more stringent QC process than the other TF devices, at least.

It tends to freeze for a fraction of a second when you do anything with the UI, and the browser tiles and stutters like crazy. I'd call it a cheap piece of junk, but it's not even cheap. The TF300 with a dock costs the same as a 16gb WiFi iPad. This thing will never get unplugged from the build box it's hooked up to. I don't understand how this is considered an acceptable device at that price.

A little stutter is normal for a little while after first activating an Android device. If it's still happening on day 2 then that's not normal. Have you tried changing the performance v. battery options?

If the user didn't have the options, it would mean the manufacturer made a choice for them. In this example, somebody, somewhere, whether its the user or the manufacturer, has to make the choices that balance how soon syncing gets done versus how responsive the UI is vs how much power the CPU/GPU is drawing vs how much battery life the device has. So, to answer your question, "Why is this acceptable?": It is or is not acceptable depending on your priorities and what you value. Also that^^. However, I suspect you know this and just wanted to make a snipe.

I'd love to have such a thing, but knowing Asus it will take forever before it's released, and I've already waited that long for the Infinity that's never coming out. Maybe my best option will be to get a 300 and sell it when the new one comes out.

I'd probably at least way until IO to see if something amazing is coming (cheapo T3 Nexus tablet at 7"?) but otherwise if you've tested one of the current generation tablets and like it, I'd just grab it. You can always sell it and use that to help feed your addiction when the next model comes out.
