I think it's also important to consider that one reason why a business leader isn't an identical job to a representative or executive position in government is that the goal is different. Some government proposals make sense not because they improve the economy or result in a net increase in tax revenues or save us money. Not everything has to be about the economic benefits of a proposal, but recently there's been a lot of market creep into politics. Things like unemployment insurance and housing support for families living in poverty is something the government should do because it's helping the misfortunate is a legitimate end goal of government. Even if that cost the taxpayers with no discernable return on the payments. It's great if that's a side effect, but lately the economic benefits are touted as the primary purpose of almost any given proposal instead of a moral argument about what government should be doing. I think that serves to confuse the idea of what government is and reinforce the "run government like a business" mindset. Anyway this is getting a bit off the subject of crazy political emails so I'll cut myself short here.

Well, it's not just small businesses and maybe I've just seen lovely small businesses but it's stuff like the practice of employees being paid primarily in tips, it's the employer's job to pay employees but with tipping the burden is shifted to customers. (I'm not saying that small businesses have conspired to do this but they benefit from it). Small businesses are notorious for tax evasion, While it's true that large corporations have their own ways of avoiding taxes, sole proprietorships are where most of the tax fraud occurs. I don't know, maybe it's overblown in my head but I don't think small business owners deserve all the rear end kissing that they get. In my city, we recently had an election for mayor and this guy who is notable for owning a successful restaurant nearly won: quote:Smaller, Smarter Government This is the kind of thinking that leads to us selling our capital building and renting it back, then buying it back at a huge loss.

That *excludes* the private healthcare market. You could have a better-funded National Health Service in the US and actually *lower* taxes, and nobody would have to pay a single penny in private insurance. All you have to do is say a daily pledge of allegiance to Karl Marx, or just admit that what happened in 1776 was just youthful high spirits and ask old Liz if she would mind you coming back.

As far as the promotion of the CEO President idea, that's the result of 30 years or more of absolute, rentlesss fetishization of the private sector and demonization of the public sector in American public discourse that has gone relatively unchallenged, and so it eventually becomes internalized by most people. The end result is you even get people who are salaried government employees (like some of the conservative military doctors I used to work with) blindly accepting and repeating the idea that it's not possible for people who aren't working for a profit to do their job efficiently, productively, or with pride, without taking a moment to reflect on how this reflects on their own reality. I suppose the end result is that we will eventually get candidates running directly for the presidency omitting the step where you have to get some kind of statewide elected office on your resume first. As far as the small business thing goes, I really think the focus their is primarily because the optics are better. Even many conservatives realize on a gut level how evil big corporations can be (even if they really want to own or run one), so it's a lot easier to focus sympathetic propaganda on Grandma's Flower Shop or Old Bob's Bait and Tackle Shop that the average person can identify with, even though the policies may actually primarily favor "small" businesses with hundreds or even thousands of employees that are nothing like the ones in the political ads or speeches.

I think it's also why you see people complain that public sector jobs have better benefits than private sector jobs. The implication is that public sector jobs should have their benefits reduced to match private sector jobs instead of encouraging companies to attach more benefits to their jobs. It's ridiculous at first glance, but when you realize that lots of people think that every job ever should be a direct copy of how the private sector does something (because the private sector does no wrong), then it makes more sense. That, and a lot of spite towards public employees actually having benefits. Also, the implication that people need a financial incentive to do anything shows how horribly out of touch the person saying it is. They think they're smart and that they're stating ~*tHe TrUtH*~, but in reality they sound like a lovely version of Spock that's never talked to anyone in five years.

It's ridiculous at first glance, but when you realize that lots of people think that every job ever should be a direct copy of how the private sector does something (because the private sector does no wrong), then it makes more sense. A big part of this though, is really an effort from Conservatives to turn people against public workers, and I assume really directing it at Unions. The implication is that public worker compensation is "out of control" and its all the fault of Unions. When in reality, comparing "Public Sector" and "Private Sector" workers is really a case of "Apple v. Orange". They try to compare "average pay and benefits" but it doesn't work. The private sector is full of low wage, low education, low skill jobs: cashiers at Wal-Mart, just about anything in Fast Food, hotel maid service, waiters/waitresses, call center workers, etc. There's almost none of that in the Public Sector. There is a little bit, but not very much. Most Public Sector employees have high levels of education and skills. All teachers have at least a four year degree, many (most?) have Master's, and some have Doctorates. Then you have FBI and CIA agents. Accountants in every department. Lawyers in the Justice Department, IRS, and probably a ton of others. Civil Engineers, Nuclear Engineers, Environmental Engineers. Doctors and other medical researchers at the CDC. The list goes on and on. The government does very specific things and nearly all of them require a lot of education or skills. And when you compare specific jobs in the Public Sector, to jobs that the same person might work in the Private Sector, you find that their compensation is comparable, and its not uncommon for it to actually be worse.

Why would Ginsberg resign BEFORE the general election? Why would Obama want to take her place on the Court with a progressive minority? Why would Obama be the only person to fill that spot? Why would Biden resign the Vice Presidency? What the hell does Michelle Obama have to do with anything? There's a million questions surrounding it, but mostly I just want to know... why?
