feedmyleg posted:How do search/archives work here? I've had them for a while but rarely used them, and now I'm trying to find a thread I made last year (Young Indiana Jones thread in TVIV) but can't seem to find any trace of it either by doing a search under "Search the Forums" or by checking my "post history" - though with the latter I wasn't willing to manually sift through thousands of posts, but it doesn't seem to have all of them. What's the deal? How do I access this stuff? Go to TVIV, and look at the archives box above the list of threads. Select a year (or a year and a month, or a year and a month and a day) for when the thread was first posted and click go. Then go through the thread. The official search the forums link/post history doesn't handle archives, and the unofficial archives search announced in QCS hasn't indexed TVIV, afaik.

Doesn't that archives doo-hickey display threads that were "killed" that day rather than posted that day?

Wait, so I have to remember exactly when I posted it? I have no clue when that was. I... guess I'll just stop wanting to read that and wait for that unofficial search to index it and keep my eye on that QCS thread. Thanks.

I don't think the live forums let you sort by when threads were posted, only by the last time a post was made in them. It makes sense then that archives goes by last post made not first post made.

Before diving into W&W to find the right thread for this-- I've got some brown leather shoes, which have gotten significantly scuffed up. They were never polished to a shine, but they're extremely matte/dull now. Is there any wax/low polish product that's better than any other? I'm not looking to get them shiny, just.. not so crummy-looking.

I'm moving to an area where I'll have the option to purchase wind credits (what I assume are REC's for wind) for up to 100% of my monthly kWh usage. So my question is whether or not purchasing REC's is the most effective and efficient manner of supporting renewable energy over fossil fuels. As I understand it, the electricity from a renewable source is fed into the grid as its produced, and which point it functions just like all the other electricity produced from other sources. Buying the credit is just a way of staking a claim on being the supporter of the electricity from that energy source, but the electricity from the renewable source is fed into the grid regardless of who or how many people purchase credits. So does the money given to my utility company for purchasing a credit go towards supporting clean energy in an efficient manner, or are there other avenues like NPO clean energy advocacy groups that would be better off with my money?

Could you get in trouble for being "too educated" at your job? Say for a job you apply for requires a BS in Engineering, and lets say you have a PH.D, or you have a Bachelors plus another one in chemical engineering but you omit one or dumb down your degree because people didn't want to have to pay you a high salary. Could you get in trouble for that?

Are most of the things on Kickstarter patented already? Or do people submit an idea and if it is good and people donate use the money to apply and research a patent? I have a good idea for a removable roof luggage rack for cars, but I lack the funds to apply for a patent.

If they don't need someone with a PHD but you have one anyway then you wont get in trouble but you might not get the job for being over qualified.

You'll obviously need to be able to answer questions about what you were doing for the years you were getting your other degree. If you can do that without lying I don't see the problem with it at all. I've had approimately 10 different jobs in my life, starting with McDonald's and including floating around several bars during four years at university. They don't all go on my CV, even when I've applied for general minimum wage jobs.

Yeah I know you aren't supposed to lie but most people you hear lie for the opposite reason, they say they have education they don't (Like that guy at Yahoo). I was wondering if companies would be as hard if the situation were reversed.

Omitting work history or education from a resume is perfectly normal, a lot of times for that very reason; that being "overqualified" is a very real thing that an employer may consider and pass on your resume. I can't think of a situation and employer would be angry that an employee didn't disclose education. Well, maybe if your get promoted over your boss with your undisclosed PHD.

Does the government's right to eminent domain extend to intellectual property? Has there ever been an example (I'm thinking mostly of the US federal government, but any government really) of this being tested in a court? I can re-ask in the legal megathread if that's a better place for it, but this is purely a hypothetical and I doubt it's an actual topic of legal concern.

For example in World War I, all of Bayer's (German company that created aspirin among other things) intellectual property in the United States was seized by the government and then auctioned off.

The government can delay patent disclosure if someone attempts to patent something that resembles classified work. I had a physics professor who invented something related to sonar, and his patent was held up by the Navy for a while, but he did eventually get the patent granted, so I guess the classified work does not count as prior art. IANAL or a spook.

Question: what's a good IRC client for Windows (native as opposed to Cygwin)? I'd prefer open source/free that's actively keeping up to date (especially security), and something that's not a 747 cockpit of options and scripting features to tweak.

Unless you're ok with Mibbit (which really is pretty decent depending on what you want to do), your options are pretty much mIRC and xchat. I'm pretty sure there's a direct xchat port for Windows now, which I assume is what you were alluding to when you mentioned cygwin. There's an irc add-on for firefox too that is ok as I recall, but I switched to chrome a while back and there wasn't anything available for it last time I checked.

What is the best way to find someone to do freelance programming for web stuff? I just need it for a small project using some php/mySQL, and some facebook API stuff. I don't know anything about hiring freelancers, what's the most trusted and/or respected place for that sort of thing these days?

Rubies posted:What is the best way to find someone to do freelance programming for web stuff? I just need it for a small project using some php/mySQL, and some facebook API stuff. The best way to hire someone to do anything is via word of mouth. Put the word out to friends/family/colleagues/neighbours/your hairdresser and hope that they can recommend someone who has done a similar project recently. Your second best option really depends on whether time or money is a bigger priority. If you have the money, a recruitment agent should be able to find you someone quickly, pre-screen them, etc. Obviously this costs. If you have the time, use a jobs site to post your requirements. If you go the jobs board route, you will get flooded with responses - about 80+% will be poo poo and its time consuming to filter through them all. The most effective jobs sites are ones that are local to you. If you're willing to work with someone off-shore, you could try freelancer.com.

What's with the hatred for Homestuck fans? I've never seen it, but I've seen Leper Colony bans mentioning people having a Homestuck avatar, and in the PYF internet trainwreck and social justice threads, there are mentions of Homestuck communities being terrible. On wikipedia it says that Homestuck is a web comic or something... so how did it become an object of hatred on SA?

Basically Homestuck is like crack to internet nerds and there is a lot of fanfiction, crazy fangirls who think they are homestuck characters and general obsessiveness. This kind of carries over into the thread, with the whole lots of avatar buying, some guy posting his tumblr of homestuck porn and other stuff so the avatars become a warning sign that the poster is a horrible nerd. It's essentially the new My Little Pony. Also did Michael Jordan actually become a baseball player or am I confusing reality with the plot of Space Jam?
