That's really how it should be. The best part of the aftermath of the Red Wedding was the uncertainty about what happened. Since the only thing the reader gets is people that weren't there repeating rumors about it, it took me a while to realize that the wolf's head on Robb's body wasn't just a crazy rumor.

I just finished the books for the first time and had a few questions.

- Did I miss the importance of the prologue in A Feast for Crows? I can barely remember anything about it.

- I got "spoiled" (twice) on something that never happened in the books. (spoiled incase this is something from future books) Casterly Rock got burned down by Dany and her dragons. Where did this come from?

- In the TVIV thread they said that the new Genesis game spoiled something as well. Something about the 'epilogue to 4/prologue to 5'. Can someone tell me what it was?

That prologue was the trainee master guy, Pate, in oldtown. It fills in a few details about the maesters and introduces a few characters who might be important in Sam's continuing storyline. Then at the end Pate get's killed by a guy who's description matches Jaqen's new face. Then at the end of Feast Sam meets Pate (we assume replaced by Jaqen)

One of the loading screens in the game has details on how to bake a specific type of lamprey pie. The TVIV geniuses were mad because they didn't know lamprey pies featured in the story.

Since getting into this thread I've been refreshing my memory of all things ASOIAF, and I remember being frustrated by a lot of the events occurring in the later books.

Stuff like Littlefinger's marriage-manipulations with Sansa. He went on a long explanation about how Sansa and her husband will rule the North and the Vale (assuming Robin is killed), effectively controlling 1/2 of Westeros... which is all very impressive, except for the fact that the Others are supposed to be storming the Wall and imminently about to gently caress everything over.

It just kills the dramatic revelation.

Of course, the Others have been "storming" at a snail's pace for the last 5 books, so even that threat is hard to take seriously.

I agree that the characters don't really believe in the Others, but the reader knows that this huge army is marching down to make all this maneuvering moot.

Unless of course they're stopped at the Wall or Winterfell, with the help of Bran (somehow?) and sacrifice (probably) of Stannis, which might be what GRRM is aiming for since there really isn't much time for a series of wars. Night's Watch falls, frees Jon up to rule whatever is left of Westeros.

You know, I asked him [GRRM] about who Jon Snow's real parents were, and he told me. I can't say who, but I can tell you that it involves a bit of a Luke Skywalker situation. It will all come to fruition eventually. The whole thing with all the fight over proper succession is partly inspired by the War of the Roses in the late 1400s, and back then, to ensure pedigree, the monarchies were kind of inbred. It's definitely hosed up, but it definitely happened back then, so that's why there's incest with the Targaryen line. It's toned down, though.

The series would be just better off without the Others or any mythological conflict in the background. It's as silly as summer and winter fighting in the real world would be. A Song of Ice Age and Global Warming! The Houses Shell, Exxon and BP are struggling for the mastery over the continent of Marketos.

While I'm ranting, the other thing series would be better without: children. Dany is boring partly because she's a stupid kid/teenager. Sansa's, Bran's and Arya's chapters were also boring in my opinion. I get it that many people like their chapters, but I can't think about a book that's better because it has children in it. Well, with the exception of Lord of the Flies. Which means there's still hope for Rickon!

Yeah, most of Westeros is "hurrr Others" and "hurrr dragons", but if they ever actually show up which they won't everybody will be horribly blindsided and panic because they never saw it coming. And Stannis will still be unappreciated.

I'm re-reading ASOS at the moment and I realised we arn't going to see 'Jamie Lannister sends his regards', because Roose never met Jamie at Harrenhal. Though this could possibly be changed to 'Tywin Lannister sends his regards'

I haven't seen the last episode yet but I'm a bit confused about how both Boltons will be handled. From what I hear, Ramsay doesn't set fire to Winterfell, but Theon's men do it as they retreat, right? And Rodrik's army was already beaten (and he was dead) before Ramsay arrived at the scene. Additionally, there are no Roose-in-Harrenhal scenes like you mentioned.

All of this sort of gives me the impression that the Boltons, in the show, will be portrayed as "good guys" right up until the moment when Roose shows up and kills Robb. In the books, at this point, you already knew Ramsay was psychotic and Roose was sort of a cruel weirdo.

They just skipped all the Ramsay/Reek scenes, at the end Theon makes a speech as the castle is surrounded by Ramsay's troops, gets knocked out by his own men (who intend to sell him to the Bastard in exchange for passage) and then we skip to the kids coming out of the caves, finding Winterfell burning and meeting the Maester, who tells them to run north before "they're back".

In other words, it is presented in a very contrived way because HBO decided to leave the casting of the Bastard of Bolton for another season.

Thanks for the summary :)

edit: misread some stuff. I guess that implies Ramsay's the one who torched Winterfell, without spelling it out, which makes me wonder what their plans are for Roose and how long he'll stick with Robb.
