How any of the other guests managed to restrain themselves from dropping zingers like "You think I'm a bad host? Well, at least there's no-one being raped to death upstairs." is beyond me. When he was on Coach Trip, a few people did make a couple of swimming pool jokes at his expense. Oh Brendan.

I think what annoyed me most about it was the dialogue. It seemed to be what an English person thinks Irish people talk like. Also, it had massive plotholes and relied far too much on "what won't he say/do" for it's humour.

I've lived in that part of Ireland and it's fairly accurate, albeit slightly exaggerated.

stickyfngrdboy posted:No way man, it's worth watching for Brendan Gleeson alone. Almost as good as In Bruges, which was great. Gleeson's a terrific actor, but the film just rubbed me the wrong way. In Bruges is brilliant though. It's strange really, I remember refusing to watch In Bruges because the trailer made it look awful, like some sort of poo poo screwball comedy. Then after around 6 months of people telling me how good it was, I decided to give it a go and watched it and loved it. Then The Guard came along and sort of was what In Bruges' trailer made it look like. If you want to see a great Irish film (probably the best we've ever done, though it couldn't get a release at the time), check out Rocky Road To Dublin. I don't think a lot of people realise how bad this country was in the not too distant past.

Heh it's strange, because I did exactly what Mickolution did regarding In Bruges. The trailer, and the fact that Colin Farrell was in it, made me think it'd be terrible. In the end I enjoyed it so much I ended up taking the wife to Bruges for a romantic trip, but really I wanted to walk round Bruges saying 'They're filming midgets!' in my best Irish accent all the time. Went up the Belfry, too, which was amazing. The price of beer, however, was not.HoldYourFire posted:In case anyone wasn't aware, the directors of In Bruges and The Guard are brothers. Don't forget chances are we'll have to put up with Charles having a funeral a few years later. After this is all over I hope some hilarious person with no morals puts together a looping ten hour YouTube video of Diana, Queen Mothers and the Queens funeral with a flashy laser effect and dubstep of the funeral march playing in the background and then calls it the Royal Mourning Experince.

I wish I could properly link The Daily Show's bit about the Jubilee from June 4th, but they are pretty locked down when it comes to video clips, and I have a feeling you won't be able to watch it in the UK. Perhaps looking at this as an outsider I didn't get bombarded with the whole thing as much as you guys did (we get all the UK tv channels, but there was nothing going on over here for it, obviously), but surely you can accept that the Jubilee is a pretty big deal, regardless of your politics on it, and is something that deserves the TV coverage it got. I'm not saying you have to agree with it, of course, but people do like the Royal family and things like weddings, funerals and anniversaries are always going to be big news.
