When I was riding to Sturgis and my buddy broke down on the side of the highway and an old guy in a BMW with a sidecar stopped and we got around to chatting. I guess he forgot to put it in gear cause it started to roll away down the embankment and we were like HOLY poo poo DUDE YOUR BIKE IS ROLLING AWAY and he glanced back at it and went Ahhhh it's fine. And it rolled down the hill and came to a stop and it was fine. That's my sidecar story, welp seeya

I saw a CanAm outside a local bike shop the other day, which is weird because importing that thing from across the pond must have been a right ball-ache. The owner was standing next to it all smug in a "look what I'm trying not to have buyers remorse about" kind of way while the regulars eyeballed it suspiciously. Looked like it required a lot of steering effort to manoeuvre out of the parking lot, didn't sound that great either. As for other comparable-but-better things you could buy for less, I'd have a quad bike every time. Faster, lighter, better handling, better mpg, hilarious in the wet and snow, good off road with some decent tyres, better parts availability, easier to work on and so much cheaper. Also you can have all the fun of putting it on two wheels around corners. ReelBigLizard fucked around with this message at 11:20 on Jun 14, 2012 |

clutchpuck posted:This rattles around my brain every time the subject of Harley-Davidson comes up outside the C.A.H.O.G.(R) thread. Welcome to the club, what you like is crap. I really don't think CA riders hate Harleys as much as it may come off. As most of us are gen x'ers, we instinctively despise overbearing identity marketing, and Harley the company puts that out in spades. Most of us are cheap/frugal/poor and the Harley brand tax has no value over a cheaper but functionally identical metric cruiser. As an AI subforum we're also hostile to the philosophy that slapping a bunch of stick-on chrome crap to your ride improves it whatsoever. And sometimes it seems there's some size discrimination, as half of CA seems to putter around on CL 350s and gripes about Goldwings; in the real world most Harleys tend towards the enormous bagger/trike end of the spectrum. But if we had an opportunity to ride a Harley around (and didn't have to deal with the dealer at all) it's not like most of us would turn our noses up. And whenever someone posts a pic of a Harley they actually ride, there's plenty of accolades.

I want one of everything! We have a unique interest here in that we're never more than a paycheck away from heaven. I could be tossed in the street tomorrow, my bank accounts wiped clean, and the first thing on my mind would be how to scrape together $400 for a TS-series enduro just to get back in the game. Once I had it, I wouldn't dare rationalize its existence by claiming an aversion to chrome. We are also blessed in that the very best of what's out there is absolutely attainable with some hard work. Unlike the car world, where I've pretty much come to terms with the fact that I'm never going to have a Venom GT Spyder like Steven Tyler.

The cool thing with motorcycles is after your primary bike that you would use to commute, everything after that is a pretty attainable luxury item. And whether you like old UJMs or brand new super sports, they're all pretty cool.
