hey I was just thinking about that thread we (or those who were around back in the day) trolled out of GWS about 4 or so years ago - anyone have a link or know more specifically sort of the date or name so I can look it up on archives? it was some guy who was going to start a chain of burger places based on HIS SECRET BURGERMACHINE PATENTED INVENTION, which he wouldn't reveal, until like a couple pages in he got so frustrated with trolling he basically told us it was a way to combine ingredients DIRECTLY INTO THE PATTY so you would have like a bacon lettuce tomato burger - but ALL IN THE PATTY and it was going to make him famous. I love goons.

I believe I have that machine and I used it last night to combine sirloin, bacon, and onion RIGHT IN THE PATTY. I was actually about to buy a grinder attachment for the girlfriend's stand mixer a couple month ago and she saw it on my computer screen and said, "Oh, that's what that is. It's in a box under the counter," and I have not purchased anything ground since then.

Well, I don't know how life changing you are looking for... Musically, I guess I would have to go with Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Let's Face It. Perhaps not their greatest album, but probably their biggest hit. For me it opened my ears to a genre of music that I had never really experienced and now I go looking for SKA music anywhere I can. If we mean real life altering albums, I'd probably have to go with George Carlin - Classic Gold. It's a collection of a lot of his early work, which got me hooked on everything else he's done and in a way he shaped the way I think. I was always a goodie-goodie, apple polisher type in school, but his albums and words gave me the ability to not just parrot facts and meet everyone's expectations, but to think for myself and question everything. So in a way, I would consider that life changing.

"Revolver", because it was the first album I heard that made me think "Wow, can you do that with songs? I WANT TO DO THAT!". "Rain Dogs", because I thought I knew what I was in for with Tom Waits after Small Change and the others, and he blew my loving mind - that album turned me on to artists and genres I hadn't even considered. Dexter Gordon's "Our Man in Paris" made me realize that I would never be able to come near that level of musicianship, and so - in a quite positive way - it killed my dream of becoming more than a journeyman musician. But for stuff that's made me flip my poo poo fairly recently, I'd say PJ Harvey's - Let England Shake James Blake - James Blake Tom Waits - Bad As Me Elbow - Build A Rocket Boys! Cloud Nothing - err whatever the gently caress the new one is called

Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime This was the first album I ever heard in its entirety that was not jazz or classical. The fact that the whole album told a story, and that the music was exceptional all tied together. For me, no single album has ever been able to do what that one did. Some have come close (Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt II for example)

French onion soup mix is great for when you want to crank out a ton of burgers for a day of drunken grilling. A1 sauce is for when you want to liven up a drunken 2am cheesesteak bought from a all night chinese takeout. My album would be CCR's "Cosmo's Factory", which was probably the first non industrial/electro album I really got into as a young adult.

Also I'm going to my Grandpa and his life-partner's house for a week and I'm going to make dinner for them, what would be a good recipe to impress some old people who like their food semi-bland?

SubG posted:Everyone thinks they're an expert. So they invest all kinds of ego bullshit into ~*their method*~. Which they probably learned from their Mom. Who can't cook or gently caress for poo poo. And since it's this deep sacred subject for them they a) can't discuss it without being a drama queen, and b) have never actually experimented around with it (so even if the basic idea is good, which it never is, it's completely loving unrefined). I think most people have preferences and don't understand that the familiarity is what makes them enjoy it. Also that food seems so endlessly complex (and undocumented on a theoretical level) that these "secrets" can exist. When I try to explain recipes to people I try to make it clear how easy it is - and how there are no real secrets in cooking. But after I name the third ingredient people get bored, and it's like they want to believe it's mysterious. It's like they want to believe that nobody knows anything save a few recipes. Thus, everyone's opinion is equally valid.

I can't tell if foietella is genius or horrible. Has anyone tried it? It would be around $35 shipped and that's too much for an impulse buy I'd have to wait to be shipped. I imagine foie and chocolate could work well together somehow, but I wonder if this is one of the ways.

When I heard the Fratellis, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I miss that particular type of punk. Throughout high school was liberal sprinklings of Op!Ivy, Less Than Jake, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Ramones, Garbage, etc etc. Then, once I hit college, I reacquainted myself with ABBA, because it reminded me of happier times when my mum and her sister would listen to them while bopping along. Come to think of it, I have yet to meet a female family member (of whom I have fond memories) who doesn't have an unhealthy love for ABBA. Since then, it's stuck. Hard. My elder brother, of whom I still think very fondly (even though he moved /back/ to Florida), listened to a fair bit of Creedence Clearwater Revival. I'll throw on their stuff when I'm in a mood to sort of remember my younger days. For bad pop fixes, I've been loving Girls Aloud, Dolly Rockers, and Tarkan. Between the Ting Tings and The Veronicas, I've got plenty of walking music for when I'm trying to cover a lot of ground in a little time. For quiet evenings with Puppy, it'll be either Jill Scott, Frank Sinatra, or the Andrews Sisters. My boss loves Coldplay and Simon & Garfunkel, both of whom I've grown to appreciate more and more over the years. For Indian stuff, Anoushka Shankar is doing some wicked good stuff, while M.S. Subbulakshmi has the classics on lock. When I'm in the mood for something a little ... odd, I'll flip on some Gogol Bordello and kind of bop along quite happily. There's this company near my work who orders from us all the time, who produces a band called Yerba Buena. They do really awesome fast-paced stuff. I've got a friend who's into Arab pop, who introduced me to Hisham Abbas, who does this weird pop song (Habibi Dah, for the curious), where he combines classical Indian dance/singing with Middle Eastern styling. Oh. Also, Tuvan throat singing.

When we had rats at home they always enjoyed it when we played Huun Huur Tu, seemed to make them doze off. I practice myself sometimes, which is all fun and games until your girlfriend was home after all and jumps out of the bedroom in a fright to find what the gently caress is making that sound :-) Simon and Garfunkel are cool, I like Paul Simon's solo work even better. I bought Graceland when I was 11, I think I've worn out that record three times. Still doesn't beat Faith No More's Angel Dust, of which I think I'm now on the fifth installment: one cassette (first I bought) and three CD's worn out. I should get it on vinyl, too.

Lots of good suggestions, I am going through them now! Also... we now have state church marriage for gay couples - which is a good thing.
