Was at the release for this. Long story as short as I can make it:

Friend convinces me to go, mostly because GI was releasing cellared BCS Vanilla that day and I didn't have anymore. So... He and I get there at 7. It's not as cold as a Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving) should be but it's cold. So we hang in the car because there's only 5 people in line. About a half hour later (20 people in line) we get out and start waiting. 3 hours later, the line has grown massively behind us (probably upper hundreds, at least) with some ending up in front of us due to saved spots. Whatever. We're still pretty close. They start with King Henry tickets, which I buy 2 (3 allotted) because I was saving cash for BCS and BCS Vanilla. Then when they come around for those... "Sorry, out of Vanilla."

Dear GI: If you're "releasing" a cellared beer and you only have SIXTY, please cut the allotment to one per instead of two. Turns out my friend and I were 31 and 32 in line. The first people not to get them and everyone in front of us scored 2. Sucks.

Needless to say, we're pissed... Until we get to the brewpub and try King Henry. No hyperbole: the best barleywine I've ever had by far. And I'm sitting on two bottles instead of a possible three. John Hall was walking around and we had a brief chat with him, talked to him about the allotment thing, and he seemed really cool. So I'm still pissed I missed out on vanilla and another KH, but ended up a good story and a good time.

Still have one King Henry in the cellar. Along with my last BCS Rare, it's my prized beer...

Also it's Dogfish Head album-themed beer time again. This time it's based on Dan the Automator's Deltron 3000.

quote:

In the box are six 750 ml bottles of Positive Contact, a hybrid ale that takes its name from one of the album’s key tracks. It’s a sweet-and-sour Belgian-ish ale brewed with wood-pressed Fuji apple cider, slow-roasted farro, and a touch of cayenne and fresh cilantro, which are apparently the Automator’s favorite ingredients. There’s also a ten-inch record featuring Deltron 3030 remixes by the Automator himself.
Sounds like this could be good, even if it is fairly gimmicky.

To me, Sucaba is to King Henry as Parabola is to Bourbon County: as close as it comes, but not quite there. And KH was a one-time brew, so it might be a little unfair to compare.

One of our distributors just dropped off some interesting torpedo kegs that they "found" in their cold storage. Among them, two 2010 Foothills Sexual Chocolates (how the gently caress? I don't know), a 2011 Sexual Chocolate, a DFH Midas Touch, and one single, lonely 1/6 keg of FOUNDER'S KBS :cheers:

I'm loving stealing it all and auctioning it off.

I read an article that says its a violation of state a federal law to refill a growler that wasn't purchased at the place it's being refilled. Is that true? Because that sounds like a terrible law. Part of the idea of growlers is that they're less wasteful. Making you purchase 10 different growlers for 10 different growler stations is pretty wasteful.

That being said, I kind of realize its up to the individual retail outlet. But if it's illegal it's pretty dumb.

I know at least in Michigan brewpubs have to have buy a special permit to fill growlers that they didn't sell, or at least that's the line I got from Jolly Pumpkin one day. Which I was mostly ok with, since they were selling their glass for $2. I've given back growlers to some breweries because yeah I've got like 8 of them at this point and I don't know what the gently caress else to do with them.

I think it actually varies state by state and California's one place I've heard where that rule applies. Other examples: in DC, flip-top growlers are illegal. In Texas, the main three requirements are to be glass, list the size of the growler, and have a government warning label on it.

Mahoning
Feb 3, 2007
So I found an FAQ on the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau Website:

TTB posted:

When is a growler a “bottle?”
A growler is a bottle when the brewer fills the container in advance of sale. The brewer may fill the growler prior to removal, on the brewery premises, or after tax determination on the brewpub premises.

When is a growler a “large glass?”
A growler is a large glass when a consumer uses the container to make a purchase and the brewer then fills the container. Consumers may furnish their own growler or may purchase it from the brewer.

So that's the federal law, clearly its not illegal to furnish your own growler according to the federal government. And actually the whole warning label thing doesn't even really apply if you're filling up a growler and taking it home.

I'm going to do some more research into Ohio's state laws regarding this.

the only stipulation in VA is that it has the "alcohol can be bad for you" warning on the growler, but other than that i've only encountered some good-natured ribbing about using X growler at Y establishment

My issue is, I bought a Stone flip-top growler at a local bar, and I plan on filling it up with Columbus Bodhi when I drive through Columbus this weekend. I don't want to waste money on some lovely screw-top growler if I don't have to.

And hell, I mean its Stone. Not like some local rival brewer or something.

edit: FWIW, this is what I found regarding growlers in Ohio:

House Bill 243, effective March 22, 2012 posted:

Growlers For Carryout (D-8 permit) - Allows D-8 permit holders to fill and sell “growlers” of beer for carryout. A “growler” is a reusable glass container whose capacity does not exceed one gallon into which beer is dispensed.
• Products must be registered for sale in Ohio by the Division;
• The growler must be a glass container not to exceed one gallon;
• Containers must be cleaned and sanitized by the retailer immediately before it is filled;
• Containers must be sealed and transported according to Ohio’s open container laws.

Doesn't really say anything there either.

The tasting was great. We tried:

Christmas Ale 2009
Sofie 2009
Matilda 2007
Matilda 2009
Pere Jacques 2004
Pere Jacques 2008
Icarus 2005
Nightstalker 2010
King Henry
Vanilla Bourbon County Stout

I have tasting notes for all of them, if anyone is interested (you probably aren't so I didn't type them up). I think my least favorite of the night was the Icarus, which I've never even heard of. Too much rich, syrupy sweetness without any hops or other flavors to balance it out; I'm guessing that occurred over the seven years it sat percolating in the dark, but I never tasted it when it was first out, so I don't know. Tie for favorite has to go to the Chrtismas Ale and the VBCS. The ale was like a slice of fruitcake (in a good way) and a glass of eggnog blended into a beer (I swear, in a good way). The stout was a big old monster made out of toasted hazelnuts, tobacco and burn and I liked it.

The 2004 was similar to Midas Touch, or maybe more like a Tawny Port. I'd swear I tasted currants as well. It lost all its yeasty flavors & spice over the years and tasted very sweet and winey.

Hell, I think Curmudgeon for a King Henry is a fair trade 1:1 except for the fact that King Henry has so much hype right now. The '07 had some cidery flavours and started to taste significantly oxidized (possibly attributable to the screw cap). I wasn't a big fan.

'04 Pere Jacques on the other hand, :swoon:

edit: There were also to-go bottles of some of these. I went home with two '04 Pere Jacques and a '09 Sofie.

edit 2: My least favourite of the tasting by far was that '05 Icarus, which was a barleywine I hadn't heard of. It tasted syrupy without anything to balance it out. It could have been good with either some hops (which it would have had fresh) or some brett to help dry it out like an English-style old ale.
