So, guys, which of the Portland, Maine-area breweries are worth a drat? My cousin and I might head up there in August. The only ones I'm familiar with are Allagash (which has tours; we'll stop there regardless) and Shipyard. The latter distributes in Nebraska but I'm not particularly fond of what we get out here. Beeradvocate's list: Allagash Brewing Company - 50 Industrial Way, Portland Maine Beer Company - 1 Industrial Way #3, Portland Rising Tide Brewing Company - 103 Fox St, Portland Sebago Brewing Company - 201 Southborough Drive, Scarborough Sebago Brewing Company - 29 Elm St., Gorham Sebago Brewing Company - 211 Fore Street, Portland Sebago Brewing Co. - 48 Sandford Drive, Gorham Peak Organic Brewing Company - 110 Marginal Way #802, Portland Casco Bay Brewing Co. - 57 Industrial Way, Portland DL Geary Brewing Co. - 38 Evergreen Drive, Portland Gritty McDuff's Brewing Company - 396 Fore St., Portland Shipyard Brewing Co. - 86 Newbury Street, Portland Freeport Brewing Company Inc. - 46 Durham Road, Freeport Bull Jagger Brewing Company - 1 Industrial Way, Portland

Wait, so the brewer at Rogue was found with non-Pacman yeast in his beard? Infidelity! And, really, it isn't gross. It's yeast.

They're not putting beard clippings in the yeast starter. They're merely isolating a particular yeast strain that happened to be found in said beard.

I really wanted to make some sort of joke about brewing with yeast infections but it's really just too disgusting to even think about. Much like beard-yeast.

how the gently caress does one get yeast in their beard, let alone a unique strain

Their Nut Brown Ale is loving delicious as well and their IPA is no slouch. Also keep an eye out for Juliet (sour beer with blackberries) and Madame Rose (lambic with cherries aged in wine barrels). They're harder to find these days but they're still around here and there. I tried the Southern Tier 2XIPA last weekend at my local bar, and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Pale and dry with a nice bit of malt character, and a good citrus/pine hop character in the aroma and taste. I might have to start picking it up every so often, since it's cheaper than a majority of the DIPAs out there. It also reminded me of the collaboration beer I brewed with Beer Here, but that might have just been nostalgia and the alcohol speaking. Chicago summer's really started kicking in, so I'm glad to have all these free cases of Summertime and IPA from Goose Island. Now I just need to pick up some Tank 7 or Colette and I'll have the perfect summer trifecta.

Yeast is everywhere. Dont act like there isnt wild yeast spores on you right now (unless you never leave your house?). Take a leaf, press it on a agar petri plate and wait a couple days and I bet one of the specimens will be a yeast.

Went to the grocery store today and saw that they had 12 packs of Sierra Neveda Torpedo bottles on sale for $12.50, but was not in the cooler. Drinking them now, but they have lost the hops and are more malty then the last batch I got. I saw that the gas station a few towns over has Three Floyds Gumballhead for sale, and seeing as the reviews say it's pretty hoppy I might pick it up tomorrow. Tried that Hop Stoopid the other day, but it actually tasted a bit onion/garlicky to me for some reason. Was still good, just not what I was expecting.

I think Summit hops are what give it that "savory IPA" flavor. I first noticed it in Oskar Blues' Gubna I think. It's not bad, but I usually prefer a fruity/floral/piney hop flavor if I'm in the mood for an IPA.

I couldn't sense any difference. I'm with ShaneB. No big loss. The "good" bottles aren't even anything special as far as beer, save for the limited quantity. The bad ones have an extremely rancid smell, like vinegar mixed with rotten milk and vegetables, and you can tell right away. I actually was over at a friend's house a while back (he's the beer guy at Hall's if anyone's familiar), and we looked through an entire case where every single bottle was bad.

For all the talk of demand for Chocolate Ale, there were always a few bottles gathering dust at nearby Hy Vees because nobody knew any better. (Save for the asshats who were buying by the case and selling it with a huge markup, of course)

Are Goose Island Juliet and Lolita supposed to be like $21? There are two 2012 bottles in a cooler at my local shop, but I'm not sure if I'm getting gouged at that price.

I know exactly which spot you're talking about (I really like their cooler upgrades). I spotted Lolita a few months ago at Red Star for like $15. There are still some spots where it's on the shelf, so if you're really intent on grabbing some you can probably find it around. In other news, another one of my local haunts got in some Stone smoked porter with vanilla beans (apparently it's a one-time bottling). I had it on tap about a year ago and it was outstanding, so I came home with a four-pack.

Those are two of the three sour sisters from GI (third being Madame Rose). I've seen them go for a lot more, and that's not too big of a gouge.

I haven't seen Lolita for less than $19. For the record, I quite like Chocolate Ale. Like Southern Tier's Blackwater series, it's hard to call it beer as much as dessert, but it's a tasty one at that. It's odd to me that it's rare/gouged, though, because my local shop had bottles for $8 during this year's release and I still see it around the Chicago area on occasion.

I'll clarify my issues with it: The body is abominable; it's super lean and watery. The chocolate aspect of the beer is also apparently " we want this to taste like watery Hershey's". I had it on tap, so I will assume it was a good example of the beer vs. some kind of messed up bottle. I don't see much of a draw to a "beer" that is essentially watery chocolate-flavored liquid.
