All that fat made it so loving hard to make him move. Those fat flabs would need their own bones probably. So I gave up pretty early.

Got dropbox? It's a pretty huge zbrush file if you want the highest subdivision.

Use an animated jiggle or wrap deformer for all that fat. You could use bones too . . . or a sculpt deformer, soft mod, cluster animation etc.

Yeah I had never UV'd anything before and that's what people kept telling me. I also would have extended the tail, but I didn't really know how I was going to make the tail look at first and didn't feel like changing the model by that point, or starting over.

And yeah, I'll be making more of the kids creatures. I had a post about it somewhere in this thread that has all the creatures if you guys want to jump in and make some with me. I tried painting a texture like my fish on the yellow guy but everything I tried looked stupid to me so I went with the original crayon.

Hi guys, I've started trying to learn Zbrush today with a few tutorials but I think my hand just went rogue and pressed something because the lighting's just changed on my mesh and I can't seem to work out how to fix it. I've closed and re-opned Zbrush, dragged a new material on, changed tool etc.

Ok I solved the problem. I was saving the document not the project so I was reloading the tool in 2.5d! It is my first day.. :(

I've been using the create a head from a cube video as help and inspiration.

I've been using Maya for about a month, for approx 5 hours a day on weekdays. So far I've created a bunch of stuff, most of it mediocre. Here's the best stuff so far:



The face is what I'm working on right now, creating it from reference images and trying to adhere to proper topology.
I still don't know much about UV maps or creating textures so the car is just done with surfaces. I hear Mudbox has a PTEX painting system so that sounds very interesting. What do people use to create good UVs in Maya? I hear it's a real hassle.

Not sure if you guys have seen this, but I've been using it this last week for portfolio purposes and just showing off work for critiques and it's so cool.

Unfortunately the embed doesn't work on every site, but it does on sites like Zbrushcentral, and it lets everyone interactively turn the model around however they want, turn the wireframe on and off, start a turntable etc.

Here's my latest personal project, a Dalek. The eye hood is the first thing I have ever unwrapped (I literally just finished it, so no texture yet). Still needs some work but it turned out way better than I expected. I don't even know what I'm going to do with it when I'm done, I guess it's more an exercise than a project really.

Nice job unwrapping! It's really not that bad once you get used to it, and frankly I think it's going to get a whole lot easier in the coming years. It'll probably do it all for you soon.

Any Zbrush guys here that can help me out with Dynamesh? I've watched some videos and it looks awesome but my problem is it seems to be subdividing way too much for me. Like I make a cub that's 1,1,1 and put the dynamesh resolution all the way down to 8 or 16, click dynamesh and suddenly it's huge polycount. Is there any way to keep that down?

Scale it down! Turn on the floor plane so you've some idea of scale. Dynamesh uses internal units. I'm not sure what units you're using to measure, but it's likely that it's way too huge.

Yup. The reason for the second Tom Hanks was because one was apparently autographed. The artist makes these for high end toys / figures etc. Really weird trivia: Apparently Biden owns a tiny little bust of himself from the same artist.

Does everybody know that you can purchase a perpetual student license? Apparently you get a huge discount when you upgrade to a commercial license, but I haven't done that yet.

I picked up Maya, 3DS Max, SoftImage, Mudbox, MotionBuilder and Sketchbook Pro for about $400.00 last year when I was a student. If I'm not being clear, the license never expires, you just need to be a student when you purchase it.

The only licensing condition is that the software cannot be used commercially. There are no watermarks on anything, so I can build a proper portfolio.

I love Mudbox. If you can draw, Mudbox is so easy to use. I'm still torn between Maya and 3DS Max. I love Maya's cloth and particle effects and I also love 3DS Max' animation tools (CAT).

I guess the only catch is that you need one hell of a computer to run this software. I bought the software first and then specced and assembled the hardware.

Autodesk's site, especially the bit concerning students, is incredibly bad. I had to download my student copies of various things by changing the numbers in the URL around until I found the program I wanted.

Wish they'd done that sooner, I just graduated (well, in November) and could have done with a lifetimes worth of programs. At least I've got another two years or so of Maya to go :)
