So really, because of France, who pulled out of NATO regardless, we ended up with the Vietnam war, and a hostile Vietnam, and POW John McCain, and a Sarah Palin.

When really, given hindsight, we could have just told the French to gently caress right off and possibly avoided that entire loving mess and would now have a Southeast Asian ally and a check against the rise of China.

Thanks France.

Edit: China would be overjoyed at a US Naval base at Haiphong.

That's not entirely correct. The US would have gone into Vietnam regardless of whether the French toughed it out or not. The US was propping up former Japanese and French collaborators and ready to use elements of the Japanese army following the end of World War II to keep Vietnam from going "communist."

Understandably, the US wanted France to use its cannon fodder and not theirs, especially since the US was bogged down in Korea most of the time. Also, Vietnam over the years became quiet a "check" on China since they hated the Chinese with a passion and even repelled them in an invasion. The Vietnamese are pretty good at defending their country.

Here's a PsyWar leaflet dropped on the Vietcong challenging them to come out and fight.

The cowardly Communists can only hide themselves behind women and children to furtively attack.

After WW2 ended, wasn't Ho Chi Minh a fan of the US, and came to us first for support? and then, after we sided with the French, that's what killed relations?

Or have I got my history wrong? I always thought that if we had sided with him, history would have turned out differently. Or was he too far gone as a communist by then...

Like many early figures in decolonization, Ho Chi Minh initially found the US to be pretty attractive since we talked a big game during/immediately after WWII about national self-determination and the end of the old European empires. On this basis he'd made several appeals to the US during the First Indochina War (citing our Declaration of Independence and Constitution, if I remember right) and in its immediate aftermath for US recognition, but was rebuffed for Cold War reasons (he's too much a commie, we need to prop up the French, etc).

Since we're on the subject, here he is as a younger, more dapper fellow at the Versailles Conference!

This was the first I've heard of this story, and it's really sickening to me. It makes me feel ashamed to be a gamer.

Here's a couple of Soviet propaganda posters that I saw while doing research on the Moscow subway. My Russian is still pretty poor but here's my best attempt at translations:

Top: Model Transportation for the Proletarian Capitol
Bottom: METROpolitan (the pun works in Russian too)

Top: There are no fortresses which the Bolsheviks cannot take (I think. Can any Russian-speaking goons help me out here?)
Middle: Long live our great Stalin!
Bottom: There is a Metro!

Huh, I did not know that the Dutch tried to re-conquer Indonesia in the late 40's, and tried to drag the US into it. Good thing the US figured the Indonesians could do a perfectly fine job of killing communists on their own. (With a little help from their friends at the CIA, of course)

You know what we call the military operations undertaken by the Dutch military during the Indonesian War of Independence, or even more commonly, the whole Indonesian War of Independence to this day? "Politionele acties", meaning police actions.

Here's some pictures of the first police action

And of the second police action

Fresh personnel arriving for the police actions

My late grandfather lived through the German occupation and was then in the army and sent to Indonesia during the war for independence. He has at times spoken about his experiences during the second world war and the occupation. He's never said a word about Indonesia nor visited a veteran's group or reunion.

Unlike Al Qaeda, the Viet Cong really did have a pretty extensive tunnel system. Vietnam has since converted one into a tourist attraction. But they had to widen it so Americans could fit in it.

That's very interesting. I'd heard that Agent Orange was horrible but never about this. Reminds me a bit of that time when our first physics teacher explained the effects of radiation on people by showing us pictures of radiation victims in Japan. Well, he was the biology teacher too so he showed us what happened to their offspring too. That was, striking as well.

And as much as I'd rather never have known about it, we mustn't forget. I remember seeing this in person and just thinking stupidly that it reminded me of Fallout 3. Mankind too easily looks away from horror and ignores it.
