In related news, I'm hoping to wrap up the 1.5 update today. More presets, background audio processing, better sequencers, and tons of fixes that will make patch programming better. Why do NanoStudio fans constantly bash BeatMaker 2's effects? They're really not that bad compared to NS's. NS has a better EQ, but other than that, BM2's effects are pretty decent. Yeah, you can always have a better reverb, but NS's reverb is nothing special either.

Is there any app / hardware that allows for wireless audio with next to no latency? I'm getting asked to add bluetooth audio output to my apps, but everywhere I look I read about 1/4 second and higher latency, and big variance between hardware solutions.

Most of the negative reviews are from when iOS5 first appeared - the early versions of it totally broke the iO Dock's functionality, and neither Apple nor Alesis were particularly helpful or forthcoming regarding if/when the needed updates would arrive. Luckily, that's all been resolved now.

Are there any good synthesizer Apps that feature MIDI in and out? I.e. when I play them with the onscreen keyboard, they also transmit the MIDI values out. I'd like to record the notes into my MPC sequencer and then play them back again into the iPad synth. Edit: VVVVV Thanks, that's exactly what I want

There are a bunch of apps that will render to AAC/M4A, but I can't find anything that can render to MP3. Is there anything? Or even a website that you can upload a WAV to that will spit out an MP3?

The problem with including LAME in an app is that LAME is released under the GPL, and, if I haven't misunderstood the language, any software made using it must also be released under the GPL, which app store rules collide with. I'm sure a LAME encoder app exists for Android, though. Maybe I should consider getting a Nexus 7 tablet for things iOS has problems with... Side note: iCab is ridiculously useful in so many instances. It's pretty much thanks to iCab and GoodReader that I can use my iPad as my primary device.

Maybe the WAV file was too big? I tried it with short samples and loops and it worked. EDIT: Tried a WAV to 320 MP3 conversion with a 29MB WAV from Studio.HD and it also worked. Ok so I've playing with figure a lot and I'm loving it. The main problem I have with it is that your entire " song" is at most, 8 bars. I kind of make longer stuff when I'm not recording, but in the end to save it it has to be 1 2 4 or 8 bars. So basically, is there a way to make longer songs, but in a similar way to how figure kind of lets you just play around with it. I assume it would have to have a sort of track interface, but I dunno. Basically, I love I figure but I want to be able to make longer stuff with it. Is there a logical next step?

You can almost do it in Figure by loading a new track, but there's a slight hitch when tapping songs in the file browser that ruins it. iKaossilator is much, much better at it as you can tap individual parts from saved songs to play pices on demand.. which allows you to compose songs if you want. Can't automate the play but it gets you closer to songwriting than Figure does. But neither app really tries to be a sequencer. They're more of a jam/performance type deal.

I would say the best thing to do would be to dump phrases to your favorite sampler (mpc/live/foo) and build from there.

Anyone know what's up with Animoog? I posted about it a few pages back, and it's still not working. I've uninstalled and re-installed a few times, and I can't get it to work. It's my favorite iPad app, so it's driving me nuts I can't use it.

I'm new to the whole iPad music making thing (been doing it for years and years on PC/Mac). Yesterday, one of my bosses at work showed me all of the stuff he's got on his iPad 3, and it pretty much sold me on the whole thing. Some people have been saying to not bother with 3 and just get a 2. Thoughts? I know there's a significant price difference, but I'd rather be not as limited, and have a really (relatively) powerful machine to work on away from home, or in addition to my studio. So, basically, my question is, is the iPad 3 REALLY a big enough upgrade to the 2 to justify paying for it, or does the 2 pretty much take care of anything I would need? For reference I do mostly sound design (but also some music composition) and run Logic Studio at home,so Garageband is definitely appealing to me, as well as Alchemy.

The processing power of the iPad 3 is only supposed to be marginally better, so an iPad 2 should definitely be good enough for music stuff. The new iPad's screen is really really amazing though. Whatever you choose, make sure you get the 32GB or 64GB version though, because the Apps keep getting bigger and bigger in file size, especially now with the hi-res retina assets.

I am not aware of any apps that are exclusive to the 3 at the moment. From a business standpoint it would be super dumb to have your product not work on 10-15 million iPad 2s that aren't even 18 months old. That may change going forward, but I'd expect it to be at least an additional year before that starts coming up.

The big challenge with this is that Apple doesn't make the iPad 2 in 32 or 64 GB anymore, which means if you want one of those filesizes, you're either going second-hand or getting an iPad 3, which I just discovered in May, buying my first iPad (and doing it with musicmaking in mind).

So I bought Grain Science when it came out back in December but I've only recently really been messing around with it a lot. It's absolutely amazing for creating atmospheric pads and ambience. It's totally stuffed with features and options and it's all really well designed. If you want an app that really excels at creating atmospheric sounds, get it. It's $9.99 and universal.
