The color codes are really cool, and the filters are pretty smart. So I can do things like, if an email contains "XYZ" and/or sent from email address ending in somethingawful.com apply this label and do this.

They play really nice with Filters/Rules. Stuff I need a paper trail for but don't need to actually read gets labeled/tagged in all the appropriate ways and then marked as read and moved out of the Inbox. I also have labels for notifications for all the various social media/web service sites I use, which, when colored, lets me quickly see what needs attention immediately and where, and what can be put off for a bit. I also know a lot of people use them for statuses for projects, like "Todo," "Followup," etc., but personally I think the stacked conversation view combined with practicing Inbox Zero handles that without the need for extra fussing. Mass-enabling the Show if Unread in the Label List is also another good way to see what's currently squawking at you.

Crew, Groupon, etc. Things I don't need to read, but when I want something I can sift back through this label to see if what I want was sent recently. pipes! posted:They play really nice with Filters/Rules. Wow, these are awesome. I guess I've always thought in these ways, but never actually knew to assign specific categories to them. I'm in grad school right now and a label would be an amazing way to keep track of the mounds of poo poo I get for school. I also really like it for groupons/facebook/twitter etc. especially since you can mark them as read. One of my biggest problems is my inbox is full of poo poo and I would love to be able to have it empty, but still be able to easily access all of the emails when needed.

Technically, they could wait until Tuesday the 31st, which is a whole week and a day away. I really hate speculation but my guess is that it'll be released this Wednesday. July 25th was reported by some rumor site this weekend as well, but honestly I thought it would be the last Wednesday of July from the get-go. The release of the new 'uptodate' website further supports this.

Carbon Copy Cloner is no longer donationware http://www.bombich.com/software/updates/ccc-3.5.html The latest version is now commercial ($39.95) but it's only $29.96 until August 12th. CCC 3.5 works for Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion. You can use it on a 30-day trial. If you paid them a donation in the past, you can email them to get a registration. Edit: you can still use v.3.4.x versions but they're only qualified for Tiger and Leopard. Binary Badger fucked around with this message at 19:24 on Jul 23, 2012 |

Is the difference between something like Super Duper and Time Machine that SD gives you more control over your backups? Or is it something more complicated that I'm missing?
|
|
# ? Jul 24, 2012 13:51 |

SuperDuper let's you clone your whole drive manually. This gives you a bootable exact copy of your drive. Time Machine is automated, versioned, incremental backups so you can restore specific files after a crash or retrieve something that you accidentally deleted 10 minutes ago.

Unless it's been tweaked since I last used it, SuperDuper flat out quits if it hits a disk error or says you should take it to a hd recovery specialist or something. CCC logs all I/O errors and saves the exact path of the problem file so you can avoid it or search for backups of it. Mike Bombich has also tirelessly updated CCC for years, listens to users complaints, and has been great about supporting the drat thing essentially for free; for all the times CCC saved my bacon I thought it was only fair to throw some back at him (I bought it.) I just found an OS X easter egg. Don't know if this is there is earlier versions, but in the ML GM seed when you are downloading a file, you get a funny modified date on the file. I had to google the date, and then I laughed.

I also don't know of any application in which you can do a file-level clone, and it moves the recovery partition too. If you're moving to an images or a non-HFS+ drive, it images the partition and throws it in /Library/something/, then automatically puts it back in place when you restore. Pretty awesome, especially if you're buying a new HDD or SSD and want to have the Recovery HD on the new drive as well. Commercial licenses are expensive, but (again) are worth every penny.

Just make sure the old MBP is running an OS version that came out after the new one was released, otherwise you might be missing drivers.

Well it does (if you let it) move your settings and apps and their data too, so if your laptop is full of useless/old poo poo it might be better to clean that up a bit before migrating. With a nice Time Machine back-up at the ready just in case.
