I am guessing that the answer is probably not, but does anyone know if Forgeworld would sell only part of a kit upon request? The reason I ask is that the helmets from the Ravenguard upgrade kit are exactly what I am looking for for my assault marines(corvus pattern, adapted into beaks) but as I am not making a Raven Guard army the shoulder pads and backpack are not needed, and I am not a fan of the bolters.

I guess if worse came to worse I could buy it, then sell the extra bits, but that would probably be a bit of work that I don't want to deal with.

Edit: Ugh, upon closer look, it seems like the kit only contains one special "beak" beaky helmet, and the rest are just regular beak helms.

Buy the pack, make a mold of the one bit, cast the bits, return the FW pack. Just be careful with it while it's in your possession.

It's not just the initial outlay ($100 or more to try out a hobby), but also what looks to me like a huge time commitment. And can I just stop at the initial purchase, or will I quickly find myself negotiating weekly budgets with my spouse? Plus, a full childhood of model building and D&D miniature painting disasters has proven to me that I am not a painter.

And yet...

Tell me if I'm wrong: Is this a hobby one cannot dip into lightly, as I suspect? Or is there some way of easing into it?

Bonus question: Is it okay to be into crushing my enemies but not into painting my minions? Cause I'm not kidding about being a full on painting retard.

The way of easing into is to buy 10-man AOBR Tac squads, or 20-man Ork Boy squads on ebay for relatively cheap to bulk up your forces. It'll give you enough to try out the game, and see if you like it.

Assault BA with rhinos, razorbacks a LR or two, and space wolf cav as allies. Is this a good idea?

I just want to use bear cav and the thunderwolves are basically the same idea. Otherwise my bear cav would just be bikes on 60mm bases. In that case I would want to ally some sweet gunline xenos cause marines are boring as gently caress.

I am so stoked for the new chaos codex! They were my favourite army but I really lost interest in them with the latest codex as the amount of variation they had got cut out. All I really want from the new codex is for Defilers to become better (I love the model), and for Cultists to have the detonate ability like in Dawn of War 2. Sorry for the incoming wall of text, but I had my first proper win with Dark Eldar last night, against my fellow noob Space Marine player. yay!

Super short battle report: Lots of Raiders (DE transport), moved around and outflanked Marines that didn't move much, Marines missed lots of heavy weapons rolls, Dark Eldar assaulted off vehicles and wiped out terminators

The longer battle report:
I used 3 Raiders stuffed with Kabalite Warriors, 1 Venom with Wyches, 4 Scourges and 1 Raider with Archon, 4 Incubu and 5 Wracks (new models I wanted to try out, also I'm not sure I was allowed to put 2 units on 1 transport); Marines had 2 Terminator squads with Cyclone missiles, 2 tac squads and one Devastator heavy weapons squad. No objectives, just annihilation and more rules learning.

Tactical error right at the start: Placed covering terrain too far forward. I should have put them no more than 12" from the table edge to keep everything in cover.

Marines won initiative and deployed fully behind cover, I was able to place the transports so only a couple of shots were able to be taken in the first round. First couple of rounds involved movement, Marines moved up and didn't realize the Heavy weapons fire snap shots if they move, so he was only able to knock 1 hull point off a Raider. I then moved the Raiders from cover to cover, taking out one Terminator with a Cyclone missile and a couple of tactical Marines. Marines didn't move the following turn so they could shoot their heavies, which all missed except wrecking a Raider so the troopers disembarked into a crater-filled ruin, then the Raiders and Venom started taking out the Heavy weapons squad and tac squad. The dreaded Orbital Bombardment completely missed and the Scourges and a Raider started moving to outflank on the right while staying completely hidden by cover.

Marines still didn't move that much, which was a mistake because they were bunched up, and the Raiders moved up to do broadsides on the tactical squads and Devastators, which forced two of them into falling back, one of which went completely off the board (yay first kill point).

Just before the Wyches assaulted the Marine commander had to leave, his girlfriend was picking him up (seriously), so I continued the game since it was just down to assaults at this time, and I needed the practice, having never done assaults off vehicles. The Terminators were bottlenecked in building alleyways, but the Wyches assaulted, didn't take any out but the Chapter Master and his Terminators moved in and killed 4 Wyches in one go from the Chapter Master. I should have rolled for Leadership but it wouldn't have mattered, the last Wych died the following turn.

Then the Archon and Incubi moved in. I didn't realize it when I selected them, but the Incubi's power weapon and the power fist on the Archon drop their initiative to 1, but then the chain fist does the same thing so it evened out. The Incubi killed 2 and the terminators killed 2, then the Archon dropped the Chapter Master in one attack, doing 3 wounds to the Chapter Master's 2, which the Archon's clonefield ignored. Then the Wracks moved in on the same squad the Wyches had attacked, one from each side died in the initial assault but by then it was all over. Slaves and the recently dead taken back to Comorragh, etc., etc.

Lessons learned/remembered:
Premeasuring attack LOS before moving is a good thing
Wyches (or any unit) can disembark, toss grenades then assault out of open-top vehicles
My Incubi and Archon (when equipped with power fist) have Initiative 1 (Unwieldy), so Archon should use the huskblade and/or agonizer to get his I7 back
Wyches can really hold up a big group with their 4+ Invulnerable in close combat
Twin-linked weapons don't roll 2 dice, they just reroll misses
40 splinter rifle shots against Terminators don't do a whole lot
Terminators have 5++ vs Dark Lances
Wound allocation still kills a guy if there are only 4 models, 5 wounds and 4 saves
Assault wound allocation is a bitch, even killing models if they are nowhere near the killing model
Need to remember Leadership tests at the end of each close combat

Sorry - it's a power something, the old metal model comes with it. DE codex says 'power weapon' is an option for the Archon, and the model has a huge hand claw thing. The rules say go with what is on the model so I went with power fist, maybe it should have been power klaw, but they have the same stats anyway (melee, specialist, unwieldy).

As for the klaives, the codex says 'Klaives are power weapons that confer +1 S' as you say, but again for power weapons the 6th ed book says 'look at the model' and 'if it's an axe or haldberd, it's a power axe', so I went with the stats for Power Axe.

Am I reading the book too literally? I don't want to try to cheat my friends but I don't want to shaft myself either.

Power fist isn't an option. On page 61 of the BRB, you will see that there are four types of power weapons: sword, axe (the Unwieldy one), maul/staff, and lance. Klaives are "unusual power weapons" which are also explained on that page, and clarified in the FAQ (which you definitely need to read and keep on hand.) They certainly aren't axes, every mention of them says they are blades/swords and they don't look like anything like axes. Axes have a haft and are primarily crushing weapons.

You don't have to hamstring yourself by forcing yourself to take the upgrades that are actually modelled on your Archon. Why are you assuming that that stupid hand claw thing is a power weapon? Why does it have to be anything? It's just some dumb claw. Just get whatever options you want. You are definitely shafting yourself at the moment. Sorry if I came off a bit harshly; I just want to make sure you're clear on this weapon stuff.

Slab Squatthrust

This is mutiny!
Only plain power weapons get the axe/spear/sword/maul thing. If its got its own name, it uses its rules and defaults to AP3. Since Klaives are Klaives, and not just a generic power weapon, they don't get to be axes. Power fists are also not listed in that section, so I'm not sure where you got power weapon = power fist. You could, however, buy a power weapon for the Archon and model it as a sword/axe/whatever, but power fists and klaws are not the same thing as power weapons. Husk blades or an Agoniser are probably a better bet.

I meant to offer some advice about this as well. PeterWeller disagrees with me, but I think splinter weapons are crap for the most part (except for double cannon Venoms.) If you crunch the numbers they just aren't impressive. They're like bolters that are better at wounding Monstrous Creatures and the occasional T5 unit but can't shoot down vehicles. 10 Warriors in a Raider shoot 20 poison shots (assuming blaster + cannon) = 13.333 hits = 6.666 wounds = 1.111 dead Terminators or 2.222 dead Space Marines per broadside (plus the blaster kill). It's just not that impressive. That unit plus ride costs 175 points and is almost certainly going to die next turn. I just don't think that's the right way to play Dark Eldar. What's the correct way? I have no idea, but the new Eldar Codex should help a lot.

OK, I gotcha - I need to read the FAQ more closely and make notes in the codex for sure. This was the first time I've been able to assault in a while, and I thought that the klaives were standard power weapons.

On the Archon sometimes I use the power(claw/whatever) as the generic option, but I do prefer the huskblade/agonizer combo - the only thing about that is I don't know how to split the attacks between the two, or if they need to be split up, because one does instant death.

e: On the broadsides, I used that math hammer site someone gave me a while back to do the numbers and yeah it's not impressive. It really hit home when I watched a DE vs Necron batrep on Miniwargaming.com last week, the guy took shitloads of Venoms and a Ravager or two and wiped the table clean of Necrons. And apparently a lot of players are scared when they see a case full of Venoms get opened up. All I've got right now are a bunch of Raiders and one Venom, plus an unbuilt Ravager so I'm trying to figure out how to load out the Raiders with Wyches (I only have 15 at the moment) for best effect. It worked out this time but against better players I'll have a tough time.

CyberLord XP - Yeah I've updated my list already, I only realized the error after the 2 units had disembarked. I was more excited to learn that Wych assaults hadn't been screwed over, really.

You have to pick one or the other before you attack. Some special unique weapons allow you to split your attacks between two modes but those are very rare and it will be stated clearly that they can do so.

I don't like huskblades because the Archon is only S3; anything worth instant killing (which isn't a whole lot, frankly) is going to be T4 or higher, more likely a T6 Monstrous Creature. I would go venom blade + agoniser. You use the agoniser vs. Space Marines and the venom blade vs. Terminators and really crappy guys.

I really like Lelith now, but she might be a bit too expensive. Eternal Warrior would have been nice (but impossible because GW allocates that USR for fluff reasons now) but she does have a pretty decent save and AP1. It's just a shame that she gets splatted by, well, everything.

HORSE'S ASS

Venoms were great last edition when you could have Ravagers and Blasterborn demech everything and then clear up the tiny 5man squads of MEQ (which were well out of their melta range) with splinter cannons while the Wracks inside the Venoms scored for you. Now with infantry being more viable, hull points being a thing (and Venoms only having 2 with AV10) and 3-man units of Wracks not really cutting it for anything except sitting at the back and hiding and hoping nothing comes near them, Venoms are a lot less viable and I don't rate them much any more.

Infantry becoming more viable and vehicles becoming more fragile hurt Dark Eldar, imo. Their Troops rank down at the bottom with Eldar and Tau and I'm not sure what they are supposed to do anymore. They have the worst allies chart besides lolnids. One battle brother with even shittier Troops and a bunch of desperate allies that can't score. Fantastic. There is no way a Kabalite Warrior is worth 9 points. Maybe 7.

Again, they were fine last edition when you paid like 60pts for 5 and a blaster and then put them in a boat. 5-man units of GEQ aren't great this edition and Wyches in particular have been hit HARD by 6th - Overwatch is pretty brutal for them, their charge distance is a lot riskier and overall shorter, FNP is generally worse for them because they're T3 so lose it more often than Marines etc. do, Agonisers are only AP3. I'm really unconvinced by DE in this edition, I hit on one list which sort of worked but I'm having more fun playing Deathwing than I was with DE.

The allies chart being purely about fluff, apparently decided on by two different people (one of whom is one of those huge loving nerds who gets upset by stuff like Orks and IG allying because they NEVER would, EVER, EVER, no your fluff examples don't COUNT, anyway no one would do it PROPERLY, they NEVER would), is a total pain in the balls.
