I picked this up on the Steam sale, and was wondering what general opinion was regarding keyboard + mouse versus a 360 controller for GTA 4. I like and am used to the former, but I played this a bit on the 360 when it first came out and really liked the analog triggers and more sensitive joysticks. Edit: I should add that I don't actually own a 360 controller, so I guess my question really is "Does a controller make the game play $40 better?" Liberty Rock was loving boss, but it was weird how you had stuff like "Goodbye Horses" and "Mama" on the same station. It was like they had some random poo poo that didn't fit any other station and just stuck it there. I just hope that when V hits we get a really awesome West Coast focused G-Funk/Rap station.

The only thing a gamepad is good for in GTA is those times when you want to relax and cruise around slowly. That said, a gamepad is worth owning in general, there are plenty of games where you'll get SOME use out of it. You also don't have to get a $40 360 controller. If I were buying one now, I'd probably go for one of those $25 PDP PS3 wired controllers and use MotionInJoy.

Having a PS2 controller for driving in San Andreas then switching to mouse/kb for walking was great, but going from ps3 gta4 to just m/kb on the pc, the only thing I missed was an analog accelerator. Now that you can actually free look in a car the mouse is handy.

If V has a bunch of countryside then I hope it has a cheesy country music station like SA. I don't even particularly like country music, but when you're in the middle of nowhere on a motorcycle it just feels so right.

I play the GTA III games with only a mouse and keyboard, but with GTA IV, i use the 360 pad for driving because I found the keyboard cumbersome for it. I don't even like country, but I'd rock K-Rose on a freeway in the country side and just tool around. Driving around Vice City and listening to the amazing music is one of my favorite gaming memories.

While I agree GTA IV driving is better than the III-era's driving; judging against the way you have to play the iPhone/iPad/Android version is just plain unfair to III. Driving was a lot better on PS2/Xbox 1 controllers or the PC - although not as good as GTA IV.

Man, GTA2 is more brutal than I remembered. $50,000 to save your game? $5,000 to get your car resprayed? Limited lives? No in-game map? (I wandered aimlessly for like half an hour looking for the save point until I pulled up an online map on my phone, really would have appreciated an arrow pointing at the church at all times) Even if I'm completely spoiled by modern games, it's still a lot of fun to play this and cause all kinds of mayhem while listening to the excellent radio stations. My favorite is probably Heavenly Radio with its completely ridiculous Christian pop. (: "JE-SUS MY SAVIOR, MY FAVORITE FLAVOR!")

GTA 2 is considerably less brutal since saving exists at all.

Welp, I'm glad I actually decided to look up the San Andreas sidequest rewards before going off to spray over all the gang tags in Los Santos. I thought the reward for that was infinite sprint, but apparently that's in Saints Row 1 instead and in SA you get the infinite sprint from doing burglary missions. Also, I finally got to experience the sheer joy that is flipping your fire truck ten levels into the firefighter side mission, with ten minutes on the clock and no hurry whatsoever. "Eh, I'll just cut through here, I'll save a couple of secOH gently caress PLEASE DON'T FLIP OH poo poo NOOOO " Paramedic missions were fun too, especially as CJ began to starve to death around level 9 (fortunately so slowly that I had at least 75-80% health left at the end) and my ambulance got rear-ended by a truck as one of the patients on level 12 was entering it. He got stuck under the truck for a couple of seconds but eventually made it somehow. I probably would have ended up hurling my laptop out of the window if that dude had died.

I thought I'd be smart and do the firefighting in Angel Pine. Don't make that mistake. Burning people run from the cars and stop right on the steepest part of a rocky incline where you can't spray them from above or below and the firetruck doesn't have anywhere near the sort of grip required to stop next to them.

It's amazing even hearing about stories from a 2004 game, how babysitted we are with games these days. I will never do those ambulance missions ever again unless a HD REMAKE is made with some form of auto save. Or if they re introduce them in 5, a level saving option

# ? Jul 29, 2012 22:29 |

Vice City Stories had a thing where it saved completion every 5 levels, but bumped up the reward requirement to 15. Beats getting to level 11 or 12 and then failing because of bullshit.

I tried to install the latest version of the Xbox textures mod for my Steam version of GTA3, but for some reason I can't get the thing to work even though I followed the instructions (it's missing a DLL file that should have been included in the automatic installer) Now the game looks like this: Oh well, let's see if I can fix this without reinstalling the game. edit: All right, it seems the installer put the important DLLs in the completely wrong folder. Now the mod works as it should. DMorbid fucked around with this message at 23:32 on Jul 29, 2012 |

The problem is that the mod installer looks for /GTA3/ and the steam directory is /grand theft auto 3/, so it creates /GTA3/ within that folder. You need to go into that folder and copy all of the files to the correct location.

Yeah, I just noticed that like a minute after I posted. Thanks for the quick reply anyways. There's also this update for the 1.0 version of the mod, let's see if I can install it without loving up horribly. Apparently it isn't fully compatible with the Steam version (as in some of the improvements don't work), but it should work fine for the most part. edit: yeah, the update seems to work okay, even though it moves the two DLLs back into the /GTA3/ folder and you need to put them back in the main directory. I finished BoGT the other day, ahead of vanilaa IV, and thought it was a great story, the other characters are hilarious and rather in-depth. I was hoping that Lost and Damned would be the same way, thus far though, I just hate it. I've probably done four missions, and just disliked every person in it, and the way you have to do everything (convoy on a motorbike ). I don't think I'll be playing much more of L&D.

TLAD gets better as it goes. It's not as good as Gay Tony, but it's worth playing. It's also not all that long, and like Gay Tony it ties into the vanilla storyline.

What? I thought TLAD was way better than TBOGT myself. Even if for the sawn off shotgun alone. I don't know, I think Johnny looks way more badass than any of the other protagonists in the IV series, too. Plus, I just like riding bikes...

Luis and what's his face from TLaD were very good characters. Not as good as Vercetti, but right after Claude. Carl was stupid and annoying and Nico was a whiny crybaby.

Yeah, he was just like Claude. He was whoever you wanted him to be. Claude and Luis work because they are a blank slate and become whatever you want. Tommy works because he is a psychopath and you usually play GTA as a psychopath. CJ doesn't work because he's a little bitch and won't realize that all of his success is being jeopardized by trying to rep the hood. Nico doesn't work because he's a little bitch and keeps crying about "I was monster in home country, I am monster here." He has several opportunities to be something besides a gangster and leave his past behind but he ignores them and keeps crying about the situations he puts himself in.
