I haven't done anything really sample-driven in awhile, so I took a page from dudes like washed out and neon indian and did this: https://soundcloud.com/mathbonus/threads

Mixing on headphones is starting to get more and more annoying the more I learn/improve, I just haven't shelled out the dough for studio monitors yet. Any feedback would be cool, especially on the mix.

That sounds ends abruptly, and a delay might help with that. You could automate it so that the delay only kicks in on the last few notes or what have you. Doing this might make it a little stale though, so if you copy the tracks, then Mute/delete so that track 1 plays segment one, track 2 segment 2 and track 3 segment 3 etc. Drop delays with slightly different settings on there. Or set up 3 FX buses and just use the send automation to these.

This is just one idea that might help generate some more interest in the sound.

Thanks for all your suggestions so far, it's helping a ton. eager to hear what you think of these changes. hosed with delays and rhythms. Also a higher-quality mp3 is here

Dude, I like it. I'd prefer it to have more of the lower mids of the snares equalised away, but the rest is cool.

As a sidenote, while I was playing this, I had a recording of some ambient noise I was messing with (thunder, rain, cars passing by, that poo poo, nothing special) playing simultaneously and it suits the mood perfectly.

Try for example playing these videos simultaneously with your track to see what I'm talking about :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6hqlN3oQjA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAnsT0WcsuE

With some clever fading in and out and timing, I think possibly an interesting direction to take this in.

I really like this. One thing I'd change is the kick. It has way too much click.

EDIT: So, lately I've began dj'ing at parties (Dubstep/DnB) with a few friends of mine, and holy gently caress does it help with producing!
You really understand what does and doesn't work on the dancefloor, even minor things you'd pass as "weak" when listening at home, wich actually matter a whole lot, when played loud and in the proper setting.

It's great, it would be even better if you took off the filters over the whole thing and added some insane sidechaining to a 4-4 beat. If you did this in Ableton I'd love to mess around with some stems.

Thank you for listening! To address your points:
1. The filters are there to mostly give it a muddy audio-cassette sound, or at least that's what I was aiming for.
2. There's actually a decent amount of sidechaining going on, it's just not overly audible under everything else, especially without a straight four to the floor beat. I'll try playing around with the filters more, and see what I can come up with.
3. Unfortunately I don't have the patience to figure out Ableton. I use FL studio, and I like the fact that I can just start throwing stuff down as soon as I open the program.

The breakdown part at 0:43 to 0:54 could use more modulation on the lead sound, or some outrageous effect. It's bit beeby and thin right now. Overlay it with some sampled source sound for more organic feeling?

Hey guys, was hoping for some feedback on my music. I have a ton of tracks, some better produced/assembled better than others, but here's the one I just finished. It's a little more straightforward than most of my stuff, but at this phase I'm really trying to work on quality of sound, song structure, and mixing. I also still use FL Studio but will be working on the switch to Ableton going forward.

I really like this dude! I agree that the first part could be filled in more, and maybe some effects/additional melodies on the higher end, but taking you at your word that you just threw it together you got a really nice track to tweak out. :)

Hey guys, I've been looking at synthesizers and midi controllers and I was wondering if you had any recommendations for something that's considered good for a beginner/student but isn't more than say, $200 or so.

I was thinking of getting an M-Audio Keystation 61-key Semi-weighted USB MIDI controller. Any thoughts on whether this is a good "beginner" board?

Do you already have knobs and stuff to tweak parameters? If not maybe the oxygen series would serve you better. The 49 key would probably be a decent bet in the sub $150 range. Otherwise maybe look for a used Axiom for around $200 on Craigslist (good luck).

Does anyone have recommendations for cheap monitor speakers?

You can, but if you're getting into synths you'll probably want to be able to assign various aspects of the sound to hardware controls for tweaking instead of having to use your mouse every time you want to change the cutoff filter!

I like this a lot but agree that the filters should be opened up a bit. I understand what you're going for but maybe there's a more subtle way. Also how do you get that snare drum sound? Is it just reverb?

Also I have a general question for the thread. When I listen to professionally produced songs usually there are a lot of little touches or flourishes that give a lot of character and fullness to a song. Like a little burst of white noise, or a quick vocal sample, or a "ding," or a couple tom tom hits out of nowhere.. My tracks sound really simple to me, and maybe this just takes a lot of practice and good listening, but how does one add little touches like that? Sometimes I try to add a quick vocal bit or extra percussion but it's usually jarring and ugly.

A simple answer for this is that it's probably placed in a heavily occupied frequency range so your hits may be trying to compete for attention against a lead/bass/drums/whatever. You should have a spectrum open and see where parts in your song kind of lack dynamics and insert something there. It's real tempting to hear something cool in a sample pack and try to throw it in but chances are it won't work. You can try downpitching the sample or you could make room in your mix for it if a vocal is that important.

I'm not the best at this, so I devised my own workaround: treat it like any other pattern/track. Percussion or melody. Write a full line that fits with the groove, that fits with the frequencies. Then strip it back to one note, one tiny flourish whatever. Then use it sparingly throughout the track.

Basically make an abundance of building blocks, enough to make two or three complete songs around the same theme, that played together would make a coherent (though far too busy) track. Then use tiny parts of them as spices.

It's a dumb trick to trick myself out of the stress of inserting a foreign thing into the music. No matter which two tom hits I'll pick from that eight bar pattern, they'll fit as a flourish because the whole pattern was made to fit, rather than feel as something I just tacked on.

I should've known better, but the snares in the Vengeance dubstep sample pack are mostly garbage—909 snares layered with white noise and compressed/EQed to hell. At least the kick drums and other stuff are decent.

Lately I've been recording myself banging my silverware on various things around the house. Then I'll throw the recordings into my DAW and make snare drums and hihats and stuff. gently caress sample packs.
