Every morning I wake up and pray whoever coined the term Dungeon is getting mugged right that second. The guy deserves it for giving such a horrible, horrible name. Anyway Mike_V covered it, but pretty much Youngsta and his Rinse sets (and his Rinse CD) for that sound. Also Distance and his Chestplate label. Black Box/Box Clever Records are probably the main source for that kinda sound.

I tried listening to the latest Youngsta podcast from Rinse, but I can't stand DJs who ramble on endlessly during their sets, and this Youngsta guy just can't shut up. I know he's really popular in the scene, but I'm not sure how anyone can listen to this

I don't have a problem with him at all, he knows when to let the tracks breath a lot better than 99% of MC's in my opinion. Just think of it as a way to get to know the DJs better. I quite like it normally, actually.

I'm sorry, but that Laurel Halo LP was really boring. I know this is sort of self-explanatory, but lately a lot of Hyperdub's releases have been completely up-their-rear end beard stroking stuff. Like what the hell was Scratcha even doing on his last LP?

Hyperdub, the next Warp Records. Too many LPs not enough twelves. Just you wait, Kode9 will start signing guitar bands next! Actually on saying all that, I did finally get a listen to that new Cooly G album and man, I don't know if I'm just losing it or I didn't really take it in properly or whatever but I don't remember anything happening on it at all. Like with a couple of exceptions, a few wee elements, I found it pretty bland. Well, bland's maybe a bit harsh and not the right word. Non-impact making. Devoid of edge or punch. It went gently into the loving night. Now maybe I'm just being way too down on it and I've not given it a proper chance. I know it's supposed to be a bit laid back, showcase for her vocals and all that, but man, disappointed. On the positive side the new Oris Jay/Darqwan album is out this week, or next week officially I guess. Now this sounds more promising from the samples. Bit of oomph in it. There's even a new low budget video for the single too, what more can you ask for? Just a shame it only comes with the download version for some weird reason. Telling you that's a trend that needs to gently caress off right now. Ya'll should just be glad I've not won the EuroMillions and started my own label, no b-sides for you iTunes purchasers.

I heard that the Cooly G was heavily ghostwritten. Not that uncommon but I could have sworn I saw some tweets going in on her for it a few months ago. Hyperdub has put out a few good EPs though! I really liked Walton's last release, LV's new EP, and I can't wait for Dark Crawler/Fruit Punch to finally drop (although the LV EP is an album warmup with one exclusive track). Terror Danjah hasn't released the tracklist for his upcoming album though, but that should be a nice change from the chin-stroking stuff that's come out lately. But yeah, definitely checkout LV - Get A Grip and Walton - All Night.

Oh yeah, Rinse 20 is going to be mixed by Uncle Dugs. Check out the tracklist here: http://www.factmag.com/2012/07/26/uncle-dugs-chronicles-the-evolution-of-jungle-on-rinse-20/ Uncle Dugs was tweeting that it's basically a themed mix starting in '91 and ending in '97 with the BPM increasing along the way. Should be a corker, Uncle Dugs knows his stuff.

Mike_V posted:That sound you just heard was 28 Gun Bad Boy climaxing. Hahaha almost. You can so tell Dugs was a jump-up boy though, the first half of that tracklist I'm like, "gently caress yeah I'd have The Sound of Music, Noise Factory, and Bodysnatch too!" but the second isn't what I'd have, but it's still pretty awesome with some good tunes. Pulp Fiction is definitely pure obvious but worth it. It's also weird to see Zinc's name next to the Fugees remix, on the proper tracklist I mean. Sure nudge and a wink and all that, we all know the truth but to have it on official like. I thought we were still supposed to be keeping that quiet. I hope it's one of the other versions Zinc talked about when he was on Dugs show, that'd make my day.

SUBFRIES posted:Did any of you ever list to the old DJ DB mixes, 'History of Our World'? To be honest I had to look up those mixes as I didn't have a scooby. It's easy to forget the US used to actually be on the Jungle thing quite early and had it's own wee kinda micro-release things going on. The Sm:)e stuff gets bonus points just because any single I seem to see from there is on a 10", which just makes me happy. But I know you also had the likes of Dieselboy getting kinda picked up early by Sub-Base to do US mixes. All stuff that never really made it over here much if at all, or at least weren't super high profile or anything. It was kinda the same when I found the old OM Colourform stuff years ago. It was like, hang on a minute! There's Americans doing like 2-step breaky Garagey kinda stuff. And it's actually good! Mental. Ah the naive days before the internet, when the easiest way to tell if a record was from the States is if it was shrinkwrapped. Of course it also could've meant a UK label pulling a fast one to appear cool and imported.

Really looking forward to that Dugs mix. Have to say, I expected him to be drawing a little bit deeper in that second half; Valley of the Shadows, Burial, Pulp Fiction, Roll On, R-Type, Quest, Bambaaata and Ready Or Not RMX are all pretty standard fare for any jungle classics compilation. Still, they're great tunes, and it'll be a great mix.

Slimzee was just the absolute don back then. Actually the first two volumes are great too. Zinc does the first volume, showing off all the older breakbeaty Garage stuff he did as Jammin' among other, while Zed Bias does the second which tastes more of the old FWD/Ammunition stuff. That whole early Tempa/Texture/Soulja/Vehicle/Shelflife spectrum thing + the Bingo thing obviously.
