Speaking just about the video, it's just a bunch of shaky camera work with some dude yelling and chasing at another dude.

Speaking about the content, this is one of the most stupid things you can do and it's completely asinine to jump to the conclusion that a guy selling your bicycle on Craigslist is the same guy who stole your bike.

For one, the guys in this video were completely stupid about it because 1) they approached the guy without cops (cops being on the way does not count—you should arrange for the cops to already be there in case the guy does try to flee, or better yet, arrange for the cops to do all the talking) and 2) they approached someone who they thought was a thief (it was in public, sure, but that doesn't change the fact that someone could have seriously gotten hurt). And secondly, it's completely plausible that a random innocent guy is selling a stolen bike on Craigslist that he didn't know was stolen. When you buy poo poo off Craigslist, do you make sure you're not buying something stolen? How does someone even check if whatever you're buying is stolen or not?

He also didn't do anything he said he was going to do. Doing a sting isn't really just going to the guy and saying "Hey you stole my poo poo cops are on their way. Wait here and get arrested." It was really stupid of him to do that since so much could have gone wrong, the thief running is about the best case scenario. If he had just sat and talked to the guy while the police were coming there wouldn't have been any need for a chase or anything dangerous.

That said, the video is pretty great. Bike thieves are assholes and need to be locked up.

VVV I didn't realize they waited 45 minutes. It would have been hard to keep the guy occupied after that length of time so I take back what I said about them being stupid. VVV

Gonna go out on a limb and say you don't ride a bike, so maybe you don't know the personal emotional attachment that comes with it. In the vid, the guy clearly states there was only 4 days between it getting stolen and appearing on Craigslist; it's extremely unlikely that someone would buy and sell a bike in that short a turnaround unless they were a) the thief and b) involved in the burglary.

If this guy had been innocent, he would have asked for proof the bike was in fact stolen. Instead, this guy immediately put his head down, and took off. Also, they had already waited for 45 minutes for the cops to show up--they were tired of waiting and he wanted hi bike back. Makes sense to me. And it's awesome that he didn't let they guy get away.

It's a combination of all these things. They didn't execute according to plan, making this a messy endeavor. There was still room for error with their accusations - but his response and reaction was enough evidence to pursue the suspect.

Secondly, my coworker says he was in a kickball league with the guy who's bike was stolen. He painted a picture of the guy kind of being an rear end with a bit of a sore-loser mentality. That kind of puts the video into perspective, because they were setting out to ruin the guy from the very beginning.

This is an online skateboarding gameshow of some sorts. Amateur skateboarders submit ten tricks every Monday and the best get picked to have their footage kind of "graded" and awarded money on the fly as a videogame themed gameshow. And for most of them if you're not into that and you just want to see some great skateboarding you can skip to the middle and just watch the raw footage.

Very fun.

We're all mad here.

If I recall when I read about this before, it's real, but there's some trickery involved. That is, it's more a matter of ridiculously quick single frames and excellent synchronization, rather than actually capturing a trillion frames in a single second or whatever. That is, they really do shoot a super quick pulse of light into the bottle, and they really do capture an extremely short frame, but they do the entire thing a whole bunch of times, each time, capturing the frame just a moment later than the previous one, relative to the start of the pulse.

So capturing a video like that which lasts, say, 100 frames, actually took 100 pulses of light. The time between each of those pulses could have been milliseconds or days, but either way, it's not actually captured in real time.
