I'm a fan of Westbrook as well, I try to bring some back whenever I go to Myrtle Beach. I love their White Thai, and just did a trade with a friend who sent me home with their IPA and a bomber of their Citrus Ninja DIPA ( I think I may have had Mexican Cake at some point in the past, but if I did it was probably before I was able to fully appreciate what I was drinking Valencia fucked around with this message at 18:11 on Aug 21, 2012 |

I'll agree some of their stuff hasn't been as good as it once was - this year's Red Poppy has become a big sulfur bomb and needs a lot of time at low temp to maybe become drinkable, for instance, which is a disappointment. Angel's Share wasn't stellar either, being basically liquid oak flavor with little else. Still, their more regular selections have been reliably great. Ten Commandments is as delicious as ever, and Red Barn is better than I remember it being. What did you and your friends find objectionable about virtually every beer they had, and why did you go to a brewery you expected to hate? To clarify, it was my friends that didn't like Lost Abbey's stuff, not me. I personally liked pretty much all of the Lost Abbey stuff, although I didn't like Angry Grimace fucked around with this message at 19:37 on Aug 21, 2012 |

Local place has Brandy Angel's Share, Parabola, and Double DBA on tap. Not cheap but this does mean my girlfriend's dog is going on a tipsy walk when I'm done with "dinner."

Brandy Angel's Share has always been mediocre compared to the Bourbon, but maybe since Bourbon was such a disappointment this year Brandy will have a chance to shine. I'd be interested in tasting notes if you can remember well enough, danbanana.

This is the second time I've had Brandy Angel's Share on tap (about a year or more ago was the first) . Tonight it was as good as I remember. The brandy heat comes off a little sweeter than bourbon. It's hard for me to compare since most of my barrel experience is with other styles. I've had the bourbon version but only from a bottle and I wasn't impressed. Thought this was- again- much, much better. So I had that with dinner, then ran home to walk the dog (sober), then went back an hour later to meet a friend. Had a Parabola. Again, this year's seems hoppier than lasts. Then- since they had one bottle left- my friend convinced me to split their last Love Child. So I didn't get to try DDBA on tap , but I'm hoping it'll still be around in a couple days. Kind of embarrassing side note: the bar got 6 bottles of Love Child. I drank two and a half of them...

Can Great Divide do any wrong with their Yeti line? Chocolate Oak Aged is incredible. It's very assertive with the slightly bitter dark chocolate from start to finish, but the roasted malts, peppers, and oak, accent this wonderfully. I still like Belgian the best, but boy this would be great with a nice brownie or something, it's great. If I were ballsy I'd make a reduction of it to drizzle over a brownie, that would be ideal.

Hi beer thread I have a question that will hopefully lead to a surprise. See a friend of mine went to Germany for an exchange program, specifically Dusseldorf, and discovered the wonder that is altbier. She's gotten pretty semi-homesick in reverse, because she misses the time she spent in Dusseldorf and the nights out with friends sipping on altbiers. I've done a bunch of research, but research only goes so far without actually tasting which is why I need some advice. It's pretty loving difficult to get the actual beers in the USA, but I'm hoping to come close. One she mentions is Zum Schlussel, which I've done some poking into and tried to match the tones and flavors with beers stateside. Considering altbiers are ales, for a gigantic generalization, would something like Flying Dog (Doggie Style) fit the bill? I was looking at Old Scratch as well. That's just one that I know I can find locally, though. If there's anything that would better fit the bill, please for the love of God tell me. I want to surprise her when she comes up for college this weekend with a glass of beer that can come close to what she misses from Germany. Danke schön

The Sam Adam's Longshot Series has an altbier and I personally thought it was somewhat close to Troegs Troegenator, both were malty with fruity flavors.

You can get Zum Uerige Sticke where I'm at (GA), which is the only German made Alt I've seen in the states that I remember. The Sam Adams Longshot one is pretty good as well. Troegenator is not really like an alt.

If you're anywhere near, or have a connection in Chicago, Metropolitan makes a great altbier called Ironworks. It's a great example of the style. Otherwise Zum Uerige is my go to alt.

Cross-posting from the Homebrewing thread: This weekend we're going to the VA Craft Brewing Festival. It's in Nelson, VA, which is just outside Charlottesville, at Devil's Backbone Brewery. The list of breweries in attendance is looking pretty rad: Alewerks Brewing Co. (Williamsburg, VA) Blue Lab Brewing Co. (Lexington, VA) Blue Mountain Brewery (Afton, VA) Bold Rock Hard Cider (Nellysford, VA) Bull & Bones Brewery (Blacksburg, VA) Capitol City Brewing Co. (Arlington, VA & Washington, D.C.) Corcoran Brewing Co. (Waterford, VA) Devils Backbone Brewing Co. (Roseland, VA) Gordon Biersch Brewery (Virginia Beach, VA) Hardywood Park Brewing Company (Richmond, VA) James River Brewing (Scottsville, VA) Jefferson Street Brewery (Lynchburg, VA) Legend Brewing Co. (Richmond, VA) Lost Rhino Brewing Co. (Ashburn, VA) Mad Fox Brewing Co. (Falls Church, VA) O’Conner Brewing Co. (Norfolk, VA) Port City Brewing Co. (Alexandria, VA) The River Company Brewery (Radford, VA) St. George Brewing Co. (Hampton, VA) Starr Hill Brewery (Crozet, VA) Vintage 50 (Leesburg, VA) Wild Wolf Brewing Co. (Nellysford, VA) Anyone else going?

Legend,* St George, O'Connor, and Starr Hill make a lot of mediocre/average beer (with a few notable exceptions), so put them way down on your list of priorities, and i haven't cared for any Wild Wolf that i've tried. if Alewerks brings any stouts or anything barrel-aged, drink that, and Hardywood's stuff (outside of their current fruit beers) is always worth trying. Devil's Backbone, Port City, and Blue Mountain are all solid breweries. apologies if you're a VA resident and already familiar with this information. *do not, under any circumstances, drink Legend's saison, it's one of the worst beers i've come across. Starr Hill's All-Access saison is tasty, though.

I haven't run into any beer festivals in the area that sounded exciting. Livingsocial has one in the DC area, but seems more like just the crowded party type vibe and not so much obscure taps. This one might be ok. VIP isn't too expensive either. http://www.facebook.com/SnallygasterDc 25 drafts so far - http://www.facebook.com/SnallygasterDc/posts/140085122799250

Thanks for the advice! I'm a VA resident but sadly have only had Port City's (excellent) stuff off that brewery list. The beer selection in the Fredericksburg area is abysmal. Having grown up with PA and their big 500+ beers bev distributors, VA generally has been a real letdown on bottled beer and cider selection (and much more expensive ), enough to get me started homebrewing. For the Charlottesville area, Beer Run is far and away the best bottle shop (make sure you wander into the back room, too).

Fort Collins is--somewhat ironically--the local redheaded stepchild, living in the shadow of New Belgium, Odell, Funkwerks and maybe even Equinox. They aren't on tap anywhere and I rarely see anyone buy a sixpack. But they make some decent beers that fly under the radar. Chocolate Stout, and especially the Double version, is quite good and I love their doppelbock. Z Lager is a tasty smoked beer. Red Banshee and 1900 are pretty OK, too.
