popup hoods have been a pedestrian safety thing for a while now. I haven't seen them much in the states, but in europe they are much more common (maybe even required by law?) http://world.honda.com/news/2004/4040824_02.html http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/02/nissan-skyline-to-adopt-pop-up-engine-hood/ Looks like the volvo one just adds a little extra bag onto the windshield as well though. peepsalot fucked around with this message at 08:56 on Aug 25, 2012 |

^^ I wonder if they used one of the two launches the GTR gearbox can do. ^^Hello Spaceman posted:Soon we'll have to drive around loving jumping castles just to prevent killing the idiots who are too stupid to look both ways before crossing. It's actually one of the reasons the MINI got a visual redesign in 2007. The old design did not meet pedestrian impact standards. Where I work, I have to dodge jay walkers glued to their smart phones on almost a daily basis. We had at least one hit and injured this year. Which resulted in several company wide notices about not j-walking. Which of course didn't help. The result is having to protect people who won't protect themselves. Annoying, but that's society. Extra note: If you live in NYC, jay walking is a loving art. The best ones are attentive and calmly stroll across traffic. The bad ones are hit by cabs. I miss NYC. We should be fitting loving spikes to the front of our cars. After all, how else are we going to teach these idiots to look both ways if not by impaling them on loving spikes. mutt2jeff posted:Volvo introduces Pedestrian airbags, and its loving stupid. The thing about airbags is everyone thinks that when you crash, they deploy 100% of the time, always. They don't. Working at an auto auction for pushing 15 years now, I've seen literally thousands of cars that have been in accidents. A not small percentage of those had airbags that did not deploy in a crash for whatever reason, including some devastating frontal collisions that resulted in serious injury or death. They help, but always wear your seatbelt, and if you're a pedestrian, watch where you're loving going because you can avoid being hit better than a car can avoid you. e- also, lol @ the BR-Z in that Motor Trend video. It got crushed, then did a donut because it's a happy lil car. Wheeeeeeeeeeeee! The fact that you can buy a Mustang or Camaro that runs high 11's/low 12's from the factory loving blows my mind. 11.6 from a Mustang, goddamn that's fast. e2- Also from the Motor Trend channel, the guy that started the Pro Touring scene is pitted against the ZL-1. You know what gets hit many hundreds or thousands of times more than pedestrians? Deer. I cant wait until what would be a minor deer strike totals a new car because that airbag went off and hosed everything up. In other news, enjoy this hour and a half recap of the "Camel Trophy", the land rover years. http://youtu.be/UGWp8R-IqoE

A commuter stepped out of a taxi and immediately ran across the road. He was hit by one car, which flung his body under the wheels of my car. The crunch of his legs and skull under my wheels is what killed him. No amount of airbags could have saved him. Cars are dangerous, sure, but people are stupid. That's what the gently caress is wrong with me.

Or you know, maybe if the taxi was fitted with something to soften the impact that meat bag wouldn't have bounced so far and fallen beneath your vehicle? Peanut President posted:I can't wait to see a big airbag deploy in the middle of a windshield when one of those things hits a bird or something. Sounds like something the Mythbusters could put to rest with a bird cannon. I don't know if they'd build a deer cannon though... Well, regular airbags don't deploy when that happens, so I'm not sure why they'd decide to throw out any and all knowledge of impacts and just create these to go off when you hit a pigeon.

I've never seen such an angular bellhousing before (and the tail housing/rear diff opening is square). Burly. e: Interesting that it still seems to use a starter (there's a hole for the flywheel teeth to come out of). I assumed they just push started these things or did whatever F1 cars do.
