Reichstag posted:Both, but every part of that image just looks like a cg render. so there's something inherently wrong with landscape photographers taking the time to get the right lighting, composition, and focus and then developing for vibrance and saturation? or...? I get that the shadows are off on this and it's an admitted composite but there are plenty of non-composited landscape photos that have skies like this and I certainly wouldn't fault them for "looking like cg" I'm really confused by what the critique is here.

I didn't say there's anything wrong with it, just that it looks very artificial.

Individually they have a "what the gently caress is this guy smoking?" effect, but in a series I really dig them.

They've been hiding in my photostream for awhile because I've felt very unsure about how they would be received.

I like the concept/technique, but I don't think it's fully realized in terms of composition or effect. The closest to what I see as it's potential is the first one.

I am going to agree with Reichstag. While it is a cool idea (I remember someone doing really long exposures of water this may be the guy http://www.silverlandscapes.com/#a=0&at=0&mi=2&pt=1&pi=10000&s=0&p=1) I think you may need to do longer exposures, but I think the biggest thing you need to change is composition. For something like what you are trying to do I think the composition needs to be really strong because you are really simplifying the scene and subject.

Saint Celestine posted:Thanks. I was thinking of taking one of these good ones and blowing it up for my mom's birthday soon. In my opinion: The third is perfect. The second is very beautiful but also very busy. I think it would have worked better with a smaller aperture. The first needs to be straightened, and could do with the contrast being brought up. A (Lightroom) graduated filter over the sky and mountains would do wonders, as the lake looks quite nice already. Take out the highlights and boost the contrast slightly, and then have that trail off as it reaches the water. And I would bump the blues up a bit, but that's just me. I think the first is the best, the third is the worst, and the second is alright. Please don't bump up the blues. My problem with the third is that the crop is too tight to give it the sense of scale that I assume you intended. Also it looks a little dark.

I have dozens upon dozens of Canadian Rockies photos to post, since I live here. Eventually I will get to some of them from this spring and summer that I haven't posted already, so I'll start with this: The only post-processing involved is saturation, contrast, and rotation. There's some truly amazing sights to be seen here.
