As a huge Judge Dredd fan, this film made my day, it was everything I had expected it to be, my Mother who came to see it with me, she knows little about the series so came in blind, thought it was great, she loves violent films so she was in her element here.

The best scene for me was probably The bit when Ma-Ma orders her goons to use the Gattling Guns on Dredd, there was so much poo poo flying at him it was crazy, the whole area got blown away.

My favourite part was right after that when Dredd walks out of the smoke and throws her main henchman over the edge and walks back into the ruins without a word. That poo poo was badass.

Just chiming in to say I got gangraped £13.60 for a non-special 3D version of this and it was worth every penny.

It feels really odd saying that people getting merked in ultra-vivid slow motion is very beautiful.

Have to admit I thought the gatling gun sequence was one of the weaker bits of the film, simply because there was so much being thrown at Dredd for so long, and he came through it more or less unscathed even as everything around him exploded. I fully expect a Yakety Sax overdub for all those shots of him running down corridors.

But yes, disappearing silently back into the smoke after tossing the henchman over the balcony was a great moment.

I loved this movie! really great fun and hope it does well so we get more.

To add to the 3D vs. 2D argument I saw a 3D version and there's one shot where they tried something interesting, it's a slow motion shot of a perp getting shot in the face and the blood breaches the boundaries of the screen (it flew into the black border at the bottom of the screen) it was interesting to see.

Looking back at it, the ending is kind of bugging me. So ma-ma puts on the heart monitor dead hand detonator macguffin. What kind of retarded design is a dead hand device that relies on transmitting a "oh poo poo" instead of the absence of an "everything's fine"? Surely you'd want it so it should have gone off as soon as it moved out of range, which not only prevents Dredd from killing her but would stop him incapacitating her and just dragging her rear end out of the tower for a tek-judge to disarm it. Maybe ma-ma is just a dumbass who didnt think of these things?

Nitpicky I know and otherwise its still an awesome film.

It is pretty chessy and they have not discovered what they wanted Dredd to be. Case File 2 is a good start as it has almost all the Cursed Earth (lousy McDonald) and also Judge Cal. If you like it you can go on to Case File 3 and that has Judge Death.

If you want to go with current stuff, this Wednesday's 2000ad issue 1800 is supposed to be a jumping on point with 4 new stories. Judge Dredd Megazine is out Wednesday as well I think and has a movie prequel story.

Have to add I used to read 2000ad when I was younger was disappointed by the stallone film and went into this with high hopes.

I am so happy Dredd delivered the violence was insane and I generally just loved the film alot. Dredd was played and written exactly how I wanted him to be and MaMa was a cool little villian (I think a good introduction to the universe for people who know nothing of Dredd villians)

I hope to gently caress that they make more Dredd films, I actually liked watching this in 3D and I'll be going with my Dad next as he really wants to see it.

I enjoyed this more than batman 3 I really hope it does well at the box office

Comics-wise, Case Files 2-5 cover The Cursed Earth, The Day The Law Died, The Judge Child, Judge Death, Unamerican Grafitti, Block Mania and The Apocalypse War, all of which are pivotal classics. (Plus you get probably over a hundred smaller stories that show off Dredd's awesome/lovely world and the weirdos who inhabit it.)

America isn't part of the main run (it appeared in the spin-off Megazine), but it's pretty much an essential read as it shows the other side of Dredd - the unrepentant fascist monster - at his worst.

Now I just have to pray for a Nikolai Dante or Glimmer Rats film.

Yeah, I don't really want to see it in 3D, as it's often just a nuisance/gimmick/too dark, but the cinema I like is only showing it in 3D, and the cinema I hate has it in 2D and 3D.

Attendance was pretty poor in my showing, but I had the day off and went to the first screening I could on release day at about 4pm, bought a beer and premier seating and had the time of my life.

Every nerd I know has reported enjoying it, but there seems to be something repellent about it to every non-nerd I know and they're writing it off for some reason.

I thought I would miss the lo-fi 'Drokk' soundtrack that was originally composed but the one they use in the film is absolutely fantastic. It's like a really hosed up distorted mix of 80's synths, Drum n' Bass and industrial metal that's atmospheric and emphasises the action accordingly.

I really enjoyed the score we got, but were Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury ever involved at all? I was always under the impression 'Drokk' was really just an exercise in creating an imaginary soundtrack for an 80s era Dredd film.

I never read the comics but by going by that it seems like Dredd could be used as a title along the lines of "Dread Pirate Roberts" instead of being clones and whatnot. Seems like it'd be a way to have there be a Dredd but allow for some growth or something.

It's been tried. About 20 years ago Dredd was having doubts as well as getting older and he began planning to take the Long Walk, where a Judge who feels he can't cope with the streets any more goes into the Cursed Earth to bring law to the mutant territories. The Justice Department felt that they needed Dredd on the streets as he was known city-wide as a symbol of the Law, so began grooming a clone to take his name. Needless to say, it all went horribly wrong.

Just got back from the movie. It isn't perfectly Dredd-like, but it's as close as a movie can ever come. I recommend that you all go to see it, if only because you will want there to be sequels. If there are no sequels, you will never see this on-screen:

I think Dredd has a disadvantage box office wise in the UK, I'm not sure about England but here in Ireland the distributor Entertainment have gotten into fights with a lot of the cinema chains so some big chains here aren't showing their movies. Our biggest screen, The Savoy, isn't showing the movie.

This movie is making me feel really loving uneasy. Most of the stuff I was disgusted about on page 7 of this thread is still very much in the final product, so by all accounts I should despise Dredd and think it's a misogynistic piece of poo poo. But then the rest of the film is so loving beautifully done and it's clearly on the level of being super-critical of Dredd and the Judges as an enterprise, so... the misogyny is also there as something the movie is criticizing? I want to believe this. I didn't get it at all from having watched it, but... gently caress, I guess I watch it again now?

I was really hoping this movie would either just be abject poo poo or it'd be fantastic and have no sincere misogyny to it. The latter seems a lot more likely right now, but I still can't tell if that's just wishful thinking on my part.

You're going to have to let us know exactly what you are referring to here? From what I seen Anderson is pretty much the protagonist of the story (since she's the one with an arc) and even when she gets captured, she rescues herself and then goes and rescues Dredd too.

Edit: Nevermind, I read your post regarding the script. It look like most of the stuff in there regarding Ma-Ma was missing from the final film.

Apparently, this movie was originally written as Judge Dredd vs. Judge Death, but then they thought the script was a bit "too surreal" and that the whole thing would be incomprehensible to non-fans. Also budget. So they went with an everyday "day in the life" sort of approach instead with eyes towards doing sequels later.

Personally, I hope they get a big-budget sequel and then blow the budget on fads and crazes, fatties, robots, and mutants. I want to see a city perpetually in a state of self-destructive boredom and consumerist misery, at least in the less slummy parts.

It would require extra explanation. Your inner Nitpicker seemingly missed that rookie Judges also only wear a half-eagle badge with no name on it and Psi-Judges wear a different badge that has a circle with "PSI" in it instead of the name strip, but Anderson is wearing an ordinary full Judge's badge. Again, though, this is all something that would require explanation. Keeping it simple is always best.
