Actually, your team isn't in bad shape, other than the fact that you traded all of your picks. So, that's kind of an issue because you do need another starting pitcher or two.

Your hitting is fine, actually. Crandall and Floyd aren't exactly optimal, but they're only starting because of injuries to Piazza and Bonilla anyway.

Kevin Brown was always pretty durable, especially in his younger career. He pitcher 12 complete games in 1993, so I'd lean heavily to it being a fluke.

Smasher, the Cultists have the Goose Eggs 1st round pick

A question: With the EC cup, is the prize awarded in addition to, or instead of, your first round pick?

I wrote a long, complex post with strategies, but it's pretty pointless.

Basically out the back of the EC Cup and draft I need, in approximate order of priority:

A good starting pitcher so I can fire ray collins out of a cannon
Schmidt or Ron Santo - if Ron will fall to my 2nd round pick (or a sandwhich pick if I happen to get one), get him then instead obviously
A good backup catcher who will make a real difference over rob Barajas
Bullpen guys times lots
A LF guy who will make an impact.

The things that might impact that:

If I get to the cup I'm gonna take Randy Johnson, Juan Marchial or Willie Mays. If I get one of the two pitchers, I don't need another starter, and if I get Willie Mays, I don't need a left fielder.

If I get the sandwich pick, it means I want to pick up a backup catcher in the 1st round.

With the bullpen thing, if a great LF (I'm thinking Chuck Klein or better to complete the cubification of the cultists) falls to my 2nd round pick grab them, but otherwise let it ride.

I have a lot of platooning pieces in Kruk/Dykstra and Irvin/Baylor - can their powers combined make something useful, or should I look for value at 1B/LF in the draft? Does Sal the Barber's age sink him for Mogul? I'm prepared to go in with Ryan/Tanana/Rijo/Antonelli, and draft another starter. Did Mike Jackson just roll badly, or is he doomed to suck?

I don't think Reggie Sanders is going to hit quite enough as a corner outfielder in the Super-League. As for Dwight Evans, it depends how old he is. Really, anything under 37 or so is worth at least a spot on your bench, though.

That said, it wouldn't be a terrible idea to look for value at 1B/LF in the draft. I don't know if that should be your first pick, but it's something to keep an eye out for.

Maglie is kind of a weird case. I think the issue is that Mogul looks at the conditions of that era (this would be the late '40s-late '50s) with its relatively low K rates compared to today, and truly terrible K/BB ratios for pitchers, and comes to the conclusion that pitchers back then weren't very good. They don't have the low ERA rates of the deadball era or the '60s, they don't have the super-high K rates of the steroid era, they don't have the freakish endurance and win totals of the '70s, and so Mogul shafts them.

And that's just a long way of saying that while I might consider giving Maglie another shot, I would definitely draft another pitcher, and I would keep Maglie on a very short leash if you do decide to put him back in your rotation.

As a postscript, if I had more time, I would correct the a bunch of deficiencies in Mogul's rating system, including:

-Deadball pitcher's groundball rates
-Deadball fielder's fielding rates
-'20s Hitters contact rates
-Overhaul of Wartime (1941-1945) ratings
-Postwar Walk and Strikeout rates
-70s endurance ratings (probably)
-60s-80s hitting rates

And probably a few other things. Sadly, that would require editing hundreds of players ratings, and I don't really have the time to do that.

This gives me an idea - with 20 (ish) people in the new class, would it be too onerous to draft round by round? If the alternative is enormous lists or wild guesses about who might be available, it would almost be easier, no? Obviously not a pick at a time, just gives us the chance to make three assessments of who might be available.

The problem with that is that it's a pain in the rear end to wrangle 20 owners to get me preferences in the first place. Trying to do it three times would make the draft take about two or three weeks.

I'm always here, man.

We absolutely need another starting pitcher. He doesn't need to be a world-beater, but we need to replace Doyle Alexander, and Schilling is too young to rely on him rolling well again. If we can get two, that would mean we could go in with Marichal/Perry/DP1/Lyons/DP2 and use Passeau and Warneke as LR/backups.

Beyond that, we need another catcher if we're going to stick Biggio at second. Simmons is fine, though, so we just need a backup. I'd be fine with anyone down to Burgess on the draft list - but we can probably trade some spare parts for someone. '79 Keith Hernandez to Polyarny for Victor Martinez, maybe. Don't have to blow a pick that way.

Otherwise, honestly, we're in pretty drat good shape. I'm not thrilled with McCovey's performance, but considering a younger version is the top-rated 1B, what can we do, yanno? I'd rather have Foxx or Eddie Murray, personally. We're not likely to get improvements where we're drafting at SS/3B/LF. Maybe if Berkman/Klein/Kaline falls to us in RF, but our extant Bobby Bonds would be OK. We could use a super-utility guy better than Ken Oberkfell - Red Schoendienst or Tony Lazzeri would fill that role, off the top of my head.

Absent further conversation, I'd say we should probably go
Round 1: SP
Round 2: Foxx/Klein/Berkman/Murray/Schoendienst/Lazzeri
Round 3: Foxx/Klein/Berkman/Murray/Schoendienst/Lazzeri/SP

With the understanding that if we get one of the first four in the 2nd round, we move on to utility guy in the 3rd.

I certainly like some of those pitchers over others, but I don't want to get into that here.

Factional Warfare

We'd just like to take up the handicapping option proposed by Factoralite, but with a twist.

Each of our teams nominates three players from a team in the opposing faction. The team designed picks one of the three players, and that player plays for the Superstars faction for the season. To prevent boning rotations completely, each list must include a pitcher and a position player.

At the end of the season - and before the gauntlet, the player is returned to their original team.

I'm decently pleased with our starting position players, so yeah, I can get behind the idea that beyond a SP and at our drafting position what we can take is gravy. Since The Paris Polyarny proposed a trade along the lines you suggested, I would concur if you will.

I approve of both a prospective trade for backup catching and this draft selection.

Somewhat shockingly, we managed to get people together in IRC to put together the following, slightly modified, lists: (Forever and Bruiser were terrified by Ted Simmons' defense)

Round 1: Mordecai Brown/Carlton/Ford/Berra/'98 I-Rod/Foxx/Kaat
Round 2: (the above, but only one catcher total) + Berkman/Klein/Cronin/Schoendienst/Murray/'01 I-Rod
Round 3: (the above, but only draft one C/RF/IF) + RP Jeff Montgomery or better/SP

I, too, approve of the Hernandez-Martinez trade.

Well, Chippy is already my favourite character!

Draft preferences (assuming I lose the TLCS)

Round 1: Joe Morgan, Jeff Kent, Willie Mays, Kirby Puckett, Yogi Berra, Carlos Beltran, Roberto Clemente, Roger Clemens, Steve Carlton, Whitey Ford, Jim Kaat, Robin Yount, Rollie Fingers, BPA (not 1B, 3B, SS, or LF)

Round 3: BPA (not 1B, 3B, or the position of the first pick)

I'm willing to move both up and down from pick 20 (not too far down though).

I approve of the draft lists and the trade.

The Madness of Koop
Super-League V was a confusing time for the Sonics. Yes, they had incredible success, but the stress of such victories weighed heavily on the mind of Koop, eventually driving him to madness, and causing him to believe that the European and Intercontinental Title were in fact sentient beings that talked to him and give him counsel. Of course, that later turned out to be mostly true, but that's another story...
