That is a really misleading webpage, it tries to make it look like the Hurt Report was done in 2006, rather than 30 years ago. I know the Hurt Report is all we really have as far as a good statistical analysis, and a lot (most?) of it is still valid, but a lot has changed since then, including motorcycles, roadways, cars on the road (hello SUVs), and rider education.

I'd highly recommend Mulholland Hwy, which is near Malibu. Really nice ride through the mountains and you can come back down to Hwy 1 via Topenga Canyon.

I went through Mullholland to PCH in my diesel BMW last year, it was a neat spot but seemed more social than anything. I'll hit it again just because, but I'd rather find more routes that are long sustained twisties with rhythm.

I got a kick out of Route 198 from the King City area to Coalinga. It's a little off 1 though.

Not in California, but if it's open you absolutely MUST check out McKenzie Pass in Oregon - route 126 to 242 to 20 from Eugene to Redmond. It is motorcycling perfection.

Also if you spend any time in Washington, I suggest taking a trip around the east slope of Mount St. Helens from Carson to Randle. It's something like 80 miles solid worth of twisties, took me about 3 hours to ride it last weekend. http://goo.gl/maps/Go3kx

Once you leave Santa Monica on 1, take any left you want. Those are all fabulous roads. Topanga Canyon, Tuna Canyon. Even Malibu Canyon is pretty good, although pretty crowded. Make it up to the 101, take a right. Back to the 1? Next left.

I think the crazy one with the tunnel is Encinal Canyon, and it's ridiculously twisty.

Over the last month, all our parts suppliers at the shop have run out of basic common parts and seem to be in no rush to get more. Tire tubes? Helmets? Foot pegs? It's September for Christ's sake, even up here in the north there's another good month of riding for people without gear, and a month or two more for people with.

God it feels good to be back riding after two months waiting for my insurance to pay out! I'm absolutely loving my Multistrada too, it is so much of an improvement over the Pegaso, which I liked, that it's hard to describe other than to say it is honestly better in every way. What felt skittish and unsettled on the Peg feels planted and unstickable on the Multi. The turn-in is like butter it's so smooth. It feels like a proper grown-up bike. I can't wait to do some actual touring on it!

I'm thinking of taking my bike from Chicago to Hilton Head, SC next year for a wedding. What sort of fun paths and enjoyable scenery are there that aren't too far off the beaten path? I still have to have my wife approve this but I don't even know if she will be going since it's at the start of teaching for her. It's also almost 1k miles according to Google Maps so I should probably split that into two days each way. Still, this sounds like it has the potential for a lot of fun.

I may have just gotten a line on a well maintained ~2007 Daytona 675 from an old coworker. I wasn't really thinking about seriously upgrading bikes in the immediate future (but within the next year, probably), but the Daytona 675 has appealed to me. Haven't talked specific prices, but I could probably get a pretty good deal on it. The guy is the original owner and is like 50 so it's a major midlife crisis mobile for him - i.e. not stunted, not tracked, etc. How silly would it be for me to jump on it from my Ninja 650R?

I love my 650R for what it is, but I'm not in love with the bike. I've been progressively wanting something more aggressive and more aggressive and have been looking at the 600-750 class supersports as a possible upgrade, so it's not like this is totally out of left field. I've been really close to buying lower bars and rearsets for my 650R, but I've held off because it seems like it'd be money better spent on just buying a more supersport-style bike in the first place. Should I do it?

Well without knowing your experience level, from what your saying, it seems to me a Daytona would be exactly what you're looking for. I think you may be surprised with how much more power the 675 has than the Ninja though, so just be aware of that.

Buy buy buy, such an awesome bike. Maybe try blagging a test ride from a dealer first to see if it works for you?

- Enough power for comfortable 2up, but I don't need a 1500 or anything
- EFI
- Prefer slightly more contemporary styling over the classic swoopy chunky fenders, etc.
- Used, in the ballpark of what my bike is worth ($4500-5000)

I didn't think I'd get any interest with the time of year and being in a smallish craigslist audience but sure enough I have a guy coming to look at it this afternoon.

I've been in contact with a seller in Maryland who has a unmolested '09 Vstar 950 with 2100 miles on it for not much more than I can reasonably expect out of my bike. poo poo has gotten real! Trying not to get my hopes up.
